7:08am: In a full story on the talks involving the Lakers, Knicks, and Raptors, Scotto says Toronto has discussed sending a first-round pick to New York, while Los Angeles has talked about sending a second-round pick. The Knicks have sought additional draft compensation, according to Scotto.
The new details from Scotto are a little surprising. Based on the underwhelming seasons Noel and Horton-Tucker have had, and the guaranteed money left on their contracts beyond 2021/22, including a first-round pick seems like a steep price for the Raptors. I’d also be pretty shocked if the Lakers could make this move without giving up more draft assets beyond a single second-rounder.
6:40am: The Lakers, Knicks, and Raptors have engaged in talks about a possible three-team trade, sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link).
According to Scotto, the framework the teams have discussed would see the Lakers get Cam Reddish and Alec Burks, the Knicks acquire Goran Dragic and draft capital, and the Raptors receive Talen Horton-Tucker and Nerlens Noel. It’s also possible Lakers guard Kendrick Nunn could find his way into the hypothetical deal, Scotto adds.
It’s an intriguing concept. The struggling Lakers would get a couple players capable of immediately stepping into the rotation and playing alongside their stars; the slumping Knicks would move off a series of players on multiyear deals in exchange for an expiring contract and more draft assets; and the Raptors would turn Dragic’s expiring contract into a veteran center in Noel and a young prospect in Horton-Tucker, who hasn’t played well this season but is still just 21 years old and has some upside.
While Scotto doesn’t specify one way or the other, the draft picks going to New York in the proposed deal would presumably come from the Lakers, based on the players changing hands. Based on a combination of their contracts and recent production, Reddish and Burks have the most trade value of any of the players included in this trade scenario. Los Angeles has the ability to offer either a 2027 or 2028 first-round pick, as well as second-rounders.
It’s worth noting that the NBA’s trade rules wouldn’t prevent the Knicks from being able to flip Reddish in a deal like this one even after acquiring him less than a month ago, since the structure of this trade wouldn’t require him to be aggregated with any other players for salary-matching purposes — New York could use Noel and Burks to match Dragic’s incoming salary.
Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report (Twitter link) has also heard that the Lakers and Raptors have talked about Horton-Tucker and says Toronto has been “quite active” in trade discussions. However, Fischer notes that the Raptors have explored many Dragic-related scenarios and downplays the idea that any talks with Los Angeles have gotten too serious yet.
At best this gets the lakers into the play-in and if they win that, then slaughtered by seed #1/2 in the playoffs.
I like this trade a lot for us, but why reddish has to be there? Keep the guy, Leon Rose
Reddish is the main part of the deal. If you don’t want him in it then you don’t like the deal. You saying you like the deal without reddish is like saying you like your moms chicken casserole except for the chicken. I agree though if the Knicks could get a first rd pk for burka and Noel that would be great and also absurdly unrealistic
Its a valid point. I rather see what Reddish can bring to the table this season and next than sell him for a pick with the same value that the one we traded for him
Idk why Toronto would want THT over Burks for the same money but aye getting Noel for the Raps is ideal.
Stylistically the Raps would be tough to deal with if they had Noel and a guy like Hield.
It’s a big win for TO if you can add two bench players that can actually earn minutes under Nurse for Dragic.
Yup bench is thin.. If we can turn Dragic into some bench minutes we’re golden.
lol why would knicks trade Cam
incompetence + Thibs… which might be synonymous at this point.
Won’t work bc Cam can’t be traded like that.
Stop, you’re ruining the mad rosterbator’s fantasies … the Knicks should just trade Randle to the Raptors for Scotty Barnes and Fornier to the Warriors for Kuminga and Wiggins … and don’t tell me about matching salaries … In rosterbator fantasyland, we don’t care about your stinking reality … Capisce?
You must be the guy that wanted the Raptors to take Andrea Bargnani instead of Carmelo Anthony. Non Capisce. This is a great trade for everyone. Dragic may actually help the Knicks. If Massi gets anything for Dragic I promise never to say anything bad about Massi again. Barnes number will be retired by the Raptors in 2035.
RANDLE FOR SCOTTY BARNES LMFAOOOOOOOO
I specifically included a paragraph in the story about how it would work in an effort to head off this question!
Lol once I saw Cam in the trade I stopped reading thinking Scotto doesn’t know the rules.
Reading comprehension is hard
The FRP for the Raps is greater than this deal, I’d rather they just buy out Dragic if that’s what it costs to get off the contract.
The only way Toronto should give up their 2022 FRP is if they get the Lakers unprotected 2027 FRP
Agree with the point about Toronto. A 1st is a lot to give up – Noel’s contract is one of our worst. Maybe they’re really high on THT though?
I don’t love it for NY either – a 1st and a 2nd for Burks and Cam. Seems light. Burks is actually a useful rotation piece, feel like he could be worth a late 1st on his own. If it was Kemba and Cam (or Burks and Kemba) then I’d like it a little more.
Giving up THT and a 2nd for Cam and Burks is definitely a win for LA, given their limited options. Burks is a bonafide starter for them and Cam’s theoretical 3 and D would be much needed (theoreticall)
Lakers would give up a first rounder as well.
But where does LA’s pick go, seems like Raps come up short in this deal.
Why not simplify this by making it a two team deal, Burks and Noel for Dragic and this year’s lottery protected 1st round pick. I know Talen is younger, but with Brooklyn exploding and the Simmons issue still dragging on, Burks would be a better pieces for a Raps team that may have a shot at an ECF, or who knows, maybe even an NBA Finals spot.
If the Raptors are really willing to give up a first-rounder, they must be way higher on Horton-Tucker than the consensus. I believe he was also a sticking point in last year’s Lowry negotiations at the deadline.
IMO I would much rather have Fox or Monk. Ideally the Knicks trade Randle and have a starting 5 with Fox, RJ, Reddish, OB1 and Mitch. Dragic is not the answer unless he’s flipped for Brunson on Dallas. I know the Mavs always wanted Dragic with Luca
Raptors are not going to the Finals, ECF or NBA…
Well, I’m glad to see the Knicks are getting rid of some contracts that shouldn’t have been given out. I don’t understand the Reddish component of this, however. All it’s told me is that there’s a disconnect between Thibs and the front office.
Considering Reddish can only be traded to another team by himself i call bs.
That said i do see a Knicks/Lakers trade incoming, likely with a 3rd team involved.
There’s a paragraph in the article that specifically addresses this.
Knicks need to trade a wing (at least one). This is a bit convoluted, but there is absolutely no reason not to discuss it.
Burks and Noel will be missed, good players on good contracts, who fit; but they were signed for a team looking to go to the playoffs this year to start. Reddish was just a flyer to me, and his inclusion is really about whether we got value for the CHA pick and the traded players. Dragic is an expiring contract I assume. I don’t count his value as a player yet.
Moneywise i get the THT for Dragic fit, but THT at his salary is too much when you can buy him out. Noel is okay and TBD on Nunn. To me Burks is more valuable to NY, but I understand the Reddish situation. I do feel its better to flip him. If I’m Dallas, I’d make a move on some of these names.
Raptors do not need to add another big man. They need a backup PG & a shooter coming off the bench.
Exactly real 1 I would rather go after brogdon than Noel.
Exactly real 1 I would rather go after brogdon than Noel. Khem birch is a big body can’t he play. Precious is high energy can’t he play
