The Lakers are waiving DeAndre Jordan and are signing free agent guard D.J. Augustin. They also plan to sign forward Wenyen Gabriel to a two-way deal, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). The team had been seeking depth at the point behind Russell Westbrook.
Jordan played nine minutes in the blowout loss to New Orleans on Sunday but has seen limited action over the last two months. Overall, Jordan averaged 4.1 PPG and 5.4 RPG in 12.8 MPG in 32 games with the Lakers on a veteran’s minimum contract.
Jordan may not be out of work for long. The Sixers will aggressively pursue Jordan, either via a waiver claim or after he clears waivers, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
Augustin, meanwhile, was waived by the Rockets at the trade deadline. The 5’11” point guard, a 14-year NBA veteran, averaged 5.4 PPG, 2.2 APG and 1.2 RPG across 15.0 in 34 contests with Houston this season. Augustin, who has logged 955 regular-season games, will be playing for his 11th team.
Gabriel has spent time with the Nets, Clippers and Pelicans in 2021/22. All of his NBA contracts during this season were 10-day deals under the hardship provision.
Gabriel, who was waived by the Bucks during training camp, has played in seven NBA games this season — six for the Clippers and one for the Nets. The 24-year-old didn’t play at all during his most recent 10-day deal with New Orleans, but appeared in 21 games for the Pelicans last season. Overall, he has 58 career NBA appearances.
Los Angeles has Mason Jones and Sekou Doumbouya on two-way deals, so one of those players must be waived to make room for Gabriel.
At least Jordan went out on a very high note.
I’d assume that means Sekou’s getting cut again? Mason Jones is a baller
Jordan will be a sixers
Sixers just signed Willie Cauley-Stein
Cauley-Stein was signed to a 10 day so there not committed to him. DJ will be a Sixer.
Warriors should Claim DJ off of Waivers.
Bjelica has been god awful lately and relying on a rusty 20-Year old James Wiseman is risky.
Looney looks exhausted lately. Kerr has played him into the ground.
You should learn to read. The Lakers signed DJ. It says that in the article. Why do they need another point guard? You are the one saying they have to many guards. Why the change.
He means DeAndre Jordan
Then he should have said Jordan. Besides, Green and Wiseman will be available soon. Jordan would more than likely just be in the way. Can’t really expect him to learn the offense, and be the least bit useful, in 10 games. Maybe next season.
Yes, sorry DJ has always meant DeAndre Jordan in the Lob City days.
Don’t want Augustin.
I think the point is moot. Bobby Marks is saying Claiming him would Cost more for teams over the Cap than waiting a few days to Sign him after he clears waivers.
No way Warriors will pay extra to Claim him by March 1st, which is the Date to be eligible to play in the Playoffs.
No problem. I don’t see the really being worried about price tag. It is not like they would be paying a full season’s salary. The real question is whether somebody can really help the Warriors. Jordan’s best days are probably behind him.
Now who can’t read?
Did you notice that the Lakers waived DeAndre Jordan to sign DJ Agustin? So, they can’t sign DJ.
Dude you’ve made a fool of yourself, just take your medicine, you got it wrong, it happens, I’ll be wrong 10 more times today alone
Giant : ITS DJ (DEANDRE JORDAN) not DJ AUGUSTIN
Yoga: The story is about the Lakers signing DJ Augustin. He has been known as DJ Agustin since he came into the league. Jordan doesn’t use DJ on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. If he doesn’t use it, why are you insisting that I use it. You guys are weird.
DJ nickname has been used by clipers fans when deandre jordan played for clipers. Thats an old story
Earlier this year, I wanted the Bulls to get him. But I’ve seen his performance slowly declining. We need size and board help with rim protection. Granted he provides all 3, I’m not sure if he is serviceable anymore.
Is there a roster freeze date in the NBA? Where a player has to be on the roster prior to the date in order to be eligible for the playoffs?
For bought-out players, I believe it’s March 1st.
Needs to be waived by March 1st, not signed.
A player has to be waived by March 1 in order to be playoff-eligible for another team, but he doesn’t really need to be signed by a specific date — just the last day of the regular season.
Daryl Morey is fond of Jordan. I think the 76ers will claim him.
Let me ask Warriors fans this: what is Nemanja Bjelica going to provide down the stretch or in the Playoffs?
He has not been Stretching the floor, nor drawing Big men away from the Key, to come out and guard him. When he drives to the rim, he either gets stripped or clanks Layups ( can’t finish at the rim).
Otto Porter can provide everything that Bjelica provides, plus more. I just don’t think Bjelica has a role on the team anymore, especially after Wiseman returns. So unless there are a multitude of Frontcourt injuries, he’s not going to play much, if it all. Why carry him on the Roster then?
I’d rather see us pickup Jordan as a “Minutes Eater”, that can body up the Elite bigs we will see in the Playoffs = Towns, Ayton, Jokic, Gobert, Zubac.
Bjelica is a Stretch-4, he has little experience trying to defend in the post or guarding the heavyweight Centers.
Did you see Embiid yesterday, he got both of the Knicks centers to Foul out pretty quickly, and Mitchell Robinson is quality young Big.
Teams are going to need waves of Bigs to handle him and the other Centers I mentioned. If Draymond is not healthy, or on the bench, things could get ugly for us in the paint.
Now you are getting somewhere. You want a Defensive Specialist. The ‘Minutes Eater’ is a bad idea. Those are the kind of guys you throw out there when you have been blown out. Everyone can agree with that. The Warriors have actually been looking for that the past two seasons. But, they don’t come cheap. The older guys are going to want a ring. I think they will have an easier time of finding a guy on a minimum salary after this season. Wiseman has been working with the guy that turned Jokic into a star. I am looking forward to what he brings to the table come playoff time…Besides, the Knicks are a terrible team to be making comparisons with. The team continues to collapse.
Bad moves all around
Bjelica plays Warriors team BB eyes closed and his passing game stretches the floor … What you expect from Wiseman is a little bit too much for a guy this ruff
Like Hollinger said Lakers cost themselves roughly $5M in tax payments and a small trade exception by not just sending cash to another team to take DeAndre Jordan at the trade deadline… Bad Pelinka management
Great point but I wonder if it’s because DeAndre Jordan won’t be claimed and will be picked up after the waiver period For a prorated minimum?
Other teams view Jordan as a negative asset at the Veteran’s minimum even with two months left in the season? That cap hit for playoff teams would be too big? Even if the Lakers sent some money the multiple tax implications?
For it to make sense for a tax-paying playoff team the Lakers would have to send out just as much money as the hit they’re taking now? But you make a good point and so did Hollinger.
Who cares if it cost ol Jeanie a few bucks?
