New addition Tyrese Haliburton said the Kings gave him no indication that he might be traded to the Pacers or any other team, as Wheat Hotchkiss of Pacers.com writes. “It’s just overwhelming,” Haliburton told reporters on Thursday, following his first practice with Indiana. “I had no idea, they gave me no indication this was happening.”
Haliburton said it’s hard not to feel a little circumspect entering a new city after being hurt, but he’s still excited for a fresh opportunity.
“It’s scary, right?” he said. “I’ve put a lot of love, a lot of trust in Sacramento and kind of immersed myself in the community and with the people. They got rid of me, but you know that’s part of the business. I think that’s kind of my best trait. It’s like somebody who just loves hard. I want to be here. I want to be a part of it.
“It can be the biggest upside, but it can be a big downfall, too. It hurt when I got traded because I loved being there and I loved the people, but coming here I’m going to do the same thing. They’ve shown me nothing but love since I’ve gotten here and they’re another organization taking a chance on me (when) they have no reason to. So I’ll put everything I’ve got into it.”
Here’s more from Indiana:
- Buddy Hield, who was also part of the trade, said it was “a shift that was needed,” after a disappointing season in Sacramento, Joel Lorenzi of The Indianapolis Star relays. “Just want to go there and do what I do best, shoot the ball and try to make opportunities for my teammates,” Hield said. “Just bring the positive energy I can bring to this team.”
- Coach Rick Carlisle said Myles Turner (stress reaction in foot) will be out through the All-Star break, but Malcolm Brogdon (Achilles soreness) is “close” to returning. Neither player has an official timetable, James Boyd of The Indianapolis Star tweets.
- If Jalen Smith plays well with the Pacers, he might price himself out of Indiana for an unusual reason, according to Nat Newell of The Indianapolis Star. Smith, who the Pacers acquired in a trade that sent Torrey Craig to the Suns, had his third-year team option declined by Phoenix, making him an unrestricted free agent this summer, but with one big caveat — Indiana can only offer up to the amount of his declined option, which was $4,670,160.
- Two-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis, who was sent to the Kings as part of the trade that brought Hield and Haliburton to Indiana, thanked Pacers fans on Instagram recently, Newell writes in a separate story for The Star.
So just to clarify, even if the Pacers released Jalen Smith and signed him with cap space (assuming they had it) they still would be limited to the offer sheet amount?
Yeah pretty sure that was a miss on the sites part. I believe the scenario you suggest is perfectly acceptable.
Yeah, but I’m pretty sure every other team would have the chance to claim him first before the Pacers could resign him
Yes, cap space or not, they can’t sign him above what would be his RSC amount.
Assuming Smith finishes the season with the Pacers, there’s no scenario in which they can re-sign him to a starting salary higher than $4.67MM, cap space or not.
If you’re asking if they’d be eligible to go over that amount in the offseason if they were to release him prior to the end of the season, then yes, I’m pretty sure that’d be possible. But if he’s playing well enough to get a $5MM+ offer in the summer, I don’t think he’ll be released before the end of the season. (The fact that this scenario is so unlikely and hasn’t happened that I recall is why I’m not 100% sure of the rules.)

Business has no emotion or sense
Essentially if it’s the Kangs!
When your business involves people/human beings as the main “product”, you better pay attention to emotions. People are creatures of emotion, not logic.
Haliburton had a big night. But Caris had a better night. Big fan of both these guys.
Let’s do this ……..
Halliburton was especially upset when he realized they could see his smile from the ISS lol
The writer for pacers.com name is Wheat Hotchkiss? I don’t believe you
Wheat Hotchkiss is a dope name haha.
I actually really like what the Pacers are doing with their roster.
Not a huge fan of the Levert trade, I actually think it was really dumb..They got ripped a new one only receiving some extra cap room in the summer and what’s likely be a mid to late first round pick..
Also, sucks they can’t resign Smith for anything more than his declined option..It almost negs the question if they’ll try to not play him very often, so maybe they can resign him for cheap..
Anyways, now, they can move forward with a growing core of Brogdan, Turner, Haliburton, Hield, Duarte, Jackson, and Warren..
I am afraid Mr Haliburton that you are right about no indication of moving you from SAC, but… then if it comes the chance to grab someone like Sabonis, then you do whatever it takes, so in that case moving from you isn’t just the right thing, but a very easy thing to do, no regrets in there from SAC!
I’m really wondering what they do with Turner. He could stay now. Or they can just go full rebuild. They have a good young core. Smith hasn’t played to earn the contract he has. So we probably should wait on him playing. Nothing wrong with taking that money for one yr. And resign for bigger contract following yr. If he plays well and can hold down the PF. I would think Pacers are looking at all bigs in this draft. Plenty of good ones.
Brogdon, Turner. Warren, Hield can all be shopped IMO. And they can retool, redo, rebuild in just one yr. And have a solid young team with a big future.
McNair said in an interview that the move for Sabonis was not to get them to the play in, but rather a move for the future. Yes that’s right, we shipped out Haliburton… in a move for the future. Makes sense to me!
Sabonis doesn’t take this team over the hump sorry. People are foaming at the mouth because of his debut against the Twolves. Did he look good? Yes. Did he open up the rest of the rosters potential? Yes. Does he play well off of Fox? Yes! BUT. Is Barnes going to turn into an animal every night? Is he going to do that twice a week? NO. Are the Kings going to play a wolves team who was trying their hardest to throw the game away in the 4th quarter every night? NO.
At the very least I can be thankful we held on to our picks to land Sabonis but come on. As JJ Reddick said “This has to be some form of malpractice on the Kings part”
