The Raptors have talked to the Hawks about acquiring Danilo Gallinari, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
The framework of the trade would send Goran Dragic‘s $19.4MM expiring contract to Atlanta in exchange for Gallinari. Fischer adds that additional details about what other assets might be involved are still unclear.
Fischer believes that the trade agreement earlier today that will send CJ McCollum from the Trail Blazers to the Pelicans could make the swap of Gallinari to Toronto more likely. The Hawks had been among the teams discussing a possible McCollum deal.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN confirms that the Raptors are offering Dragic and draft assets in their search to add another wing player and help in the middle. Although Toronto is 14-6 since the beginning of 2022, Windhorst notes that the Raptors are hoping to add depth because their starters have been logging heavy minutes.
Dragic is on a 19 mill expiring
Wow. Get a job.
Gallo not even fully guaranteed for next year. Really useful asset for Toronto. They’d better be sending something decent back in addition to Dragic’ corpse.
Nope. Atlanta is just doing salary dump. Probably will buy out Dragic to save money.
You can take Flynn
Raps would love to give up Flynn instead of future picks based on the way they draft and the need for bigs
Man I would LOVE to get Precious in this deal
No. Gallinari is not good enough to get him. He’s barely playable. This is salary dump trade.
Gallinari plays a lot. So he’s obviously very playable. He’s one of the best shooting bigs in the league as any NBA fan should know by now. He’s also basically on an expiring deal bc the vast majority of his salary for next season is unguaranteed so this is obviously about more than a salary dump
Sankara bringing the truth as always! Gallo is the best FT shooter in the league. He’s always good for 15+ pts and is dangerous from 3. Plus his contract isn’t that big considering it’s unguaranteed. Dragic is a good player (I think), but can he still play? Is he willing to play for Atlanta? If not, they better be getting something else in the deal.
Gallo doesn’t get to the line enough to have his FT% make any sort of real impact. Also, this Sankara dude consistently sucks with his takes lol
Also pretty sure he’s got multiple accounts. Unless there’s two dummies that use the made up word “unguaranteed”.
Non-guaranteed . . . sorry . . . jeez . . .
So raps basically net Gallo for Lowry, that’s a bit disappointing.
Not really, Precious was always the main piece coming back for Lowry.
ATL takes 5 mm of dead money off next year’s payroll even if they get nothing but Dragic back. For them, it’s significant.
I dont get the Hawks mindset in all of this. Why would the Hawks be willing to dump Danilo but also be willing to acquire McCollum?
I wonder the same thing…
Gallo can help Raptors.
So Hawks again dumping salary.
Nice move if it goes through. You will see the best Gallo in years. Nurse and the unselfish Raptors will maximize his abilities. He’s a scorer and the Raptors need scoring, especially with the second unit.
No way this is a straight swap. That would put the Raptors into the tax. They have carried a 14 player roster so far to avoid that.
To keep both teams out of the tax it likely eliminates any future savings the trade gives the Hawks. Not sure who much that matters if it’s a player coming with it instead of the dead space Gallo’s non guaranteed amount would be. I would guess that is the stumbling block.
Salaries basically match, do the Raps not have an extra Mil in room?
Nope
you can pull a trade within 15% of matching salaries.. so if you’re right about tax… the raptors are probably willing to eat 1 mill in tax to get a depth piece Dragic never was for them. Biggest winner of this Raptors Hawks trade is still the Miami Heat though lol
Man the Heat keep playing 3d Chess with the NBA…. if Dragic is bought out… he’s in a heat uniofrm again the next day and suddenly back to his all-star form lol
Can’t happen. A team can not reacquire a player they traded away in the same season (July 1 – June 30).
Not by signing after buyout, not by trading for them, nada. Heat could not bring Dragic back in until the following season.
This is irrelevant now . They can sign him if they want . If he is bought out
If he is traded, then bought out.. the Heat have a right to sign him. If he was just bought out, you would be correct. IE, he has to change franchises, then be bought out for the Heat to be legally allowed to sign him under the CBA… The Heat can (and will) sign him. He’s been training in the Heat’s facilities while under contract with the Raptors most of this season as is.
