The Sixers and Nets engaged in trade discussions on Tuesday, multiple sources tell Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who says the two sides “bickered” over pieces to add to a hypothetical deal involving James Harden and Ben Simmons.
Despite the discussions, there doesn’t appear to be any traction on a Harden/Simmons blockbuster, according to Chris Mannix of SI.com. Mannix says the Nets still remain publicly and privately steadfast against the idea of moving Harden during the season, believing that – despite the current nine-game losing streak – the team will be fine once it gets healthy.
Although the Nets have certainly publicly expressed their desire to retain Harden, Pompey isn’t convinced that the team’s private stance is as unwavering, citing one source who says Brooklyn’s decision-makers are split behind closed doors. Some people within the organization would be open to moving Harden now, believing he’s hurting team chemistry, according to Pompey.
Still, even if the Nets were open to the idea of trading Harden today or tomorrow, it seems unlikely that the two teams would be able to agree on a package. As others have reported and as Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com reiterates, the Sixers have made it clear that Tyrese Maxey is unavailable this week and they’ve resisted the idea of offering Matisse Thybulle along with Simmons.
While it’s possible Philadelphia would be willing to add Seth Curry to its trade offer, even that’s a dubious proposition, a team source tells Neubeck. And even with Curry included, Mannix says it’s not clear whether that would move the needle enough for Brooklyn to make a deal.
Here’s more on the Sixers, Nets, and the Harden/Simmons situation:
- The Sixers have had conversations with the Thunder about Tobias Harris, according to Pompey. However, one of Pompey’s sources downplayed those talks, suggesting they may have been instigated by Oklahoma City and adding that Harris has nothing to worry about. Even if Philadelphia is interested in moving Harris in a salary-dump deal, it’s unlikely to happen this week unless it’s part of a series of moves, since the forward is a key part of the current lineup.
- As Neubeck writes, the Sixers clearly seem to be trying to signal to Brooklyn that they believe they’ll be able to clear the necessary cap space to sign Harden in the offseason without having to worry about a sign-and-trade. Sources tell Neubeck that Philadelphia has lined up a couple potential trade partners willing to take on Harris’ contract using cap space, presumably in the summer.
- In that scenario, the idea for the 76ers would be to move Harris to one team this offseason and Simmons to another, taking back little – if any – salary in return, in order to clear cap room to sign Harden. While this is one path the Sixers could take, the fact that they’re putting it out there could just be a negotiating ploy to encourage the Nets to seriously consider moving Harden by Thursday’s deadline.
- For his part, Harris is looking forward to getting through the trade deadline and being able to focus on basketball for the rest of the season, as Tim Bontemps of ESPN relays. “That will be good for us. Because you’re just hearing everybody’s name. I’ll just be honest, it’s one of those things … trade rumors always come around, even for guys around the NBA, but in this situation, yeah, I was reading an article and there were five guys on the top 10 list to be moved, whatever,” Harris said. “So, obviously don’t get twisted: that has an impact on guys’ mental, psyche, focus, all the way down the line. So we’ll see what happens.”
- Asked again on Tuesday about the possibility of Simmons returning to the team if he’s not dealt before the deadline, Sixers center Joel Embiid again said that he’d be fine with that, per Bontemps. “Like I’ve been saying since the season started, I’m happy,” Embiid said. “Whoever wants to play is welcome. If someone wants to play, they’re welcome. But we’ve got guys here that want to be here, that show up every single night. … And if you want to be part of us, I am sure everybody is gonna be fine with it, but you got to show up. You got to want to be there. And I’m sure everybody is going to accept whoever that is.”
Simmons, Tobias Harris, Seth curry, Matisse thybulle and a frp for Harden, Joe Harris, Paul Millsap and James johnson. Money is about 13M apart but still works in trade machine
No.
Attach another FRP for including Tobias.
just no
This trade makes no sense for philly for as a deadline deal since Joe harris is unlikely to suit up anytime soon. They would give up four starters for one without free agency/draft to augment the roster
Crack is a helluva drug
About 100 million problems with that from BKN’s perspective. I believe PHI was only looking to move Harris to open the possibility of signing Harden directly (after an opt out) in the offseason.
In any event, this deal happening (without Harris) means that BKN’s owner paid well over 100 mm for a 2 year run with a big 3 he’ll never see. Another 100 mm caused by the additional 13 mm – escalating each year of these two contracts – could, even for him, start to add up to real money.
If I’m the Nets who cares about Harden walking. You get the cap back, you still have KD. Maybe even Kyrie is allowed to play full season. Meanwhile Philly guts their roster for a no-guarantees Harden in 2023.
They’re still over the cap if Harden leaves…
Fine then
Some people just feel the need to be right about everything
Some people open their mouth as if they know facts without checking.
Well we will see what happens then mister know it all
Pot meet kettle
Yes I’m a kettle I heat things up. Bring life to the forum when there is none.
King of the story I’m never boring, coming clutch when I take shots like Robert Horry. I’m the poster most likely to put you on a poster, slick typing fingers Kenny Roger’s I’m the roaster.

Some just don’t know. And still got answers. Can’t even research. You’d rather troll then flame …… amateurish
Nets are at 159 million next season. Salary cap is projected to be 121 million. If Haden declines his 48 million, that puts the Nets under the cap by about 10 million. Math is not that hard.
Maybe it is. You’re numbers are off, its about 114 mm without Harden but, in any event, they’d have only 7 players, so you add about 6-7 mm for cap holds. Teams aren’t considered to have cap space (literally or practically) until the $$ number exceeds the MLE (10-11 mm). Nets can’t get there without jettisoning KI or Harris (which is one why they’re trying to trade Harris), but they can use the full MLE and the BAE. So, it’s not the end of the world for the Nets if Harden leaves.
Wow, Nets fans. You went from the idea of having the power trio of Durant-Harden-Irving pushing to consecutive titles, to one possibly with Simmons and Irving on the same team pushing the oblivion express?
Does oblivion mean people publish multiple stories about you every day? Jw
If 76ers make a complete salary dump trade for Simmons and Harris, they would have no chance to beat Bucks
Harden starting salary set at $42 million
It’s actually $54 million
Sixers need to make a Harden and Simmons trade
Just involving them
If they want to bring in
Bitcoin
Gold Bars
Perfumes
Aftershave
Cheesesteaks
Kielbasa
Soft Pretzels
Filafel
Ice Cream
Pepperoni
Gluten Free Cupcakes
Whatever fine
But it can only involve two players, Simmons and Harden
“The Sixers clearly seem to be trying to signal to Brooklyn that they believe they’ll be able to clear the necessary cap space to sign Harden in the offseason”
The Sixers seem to be signaling tampering with giant billboards.
The commissioner should have already shut this down and blocked Harden playing with Philly this year or next.
I hate the Nets and wish nothing but misery on them but this has been overt public tampering with a player on another team for about a month.
a writer using intuition is not “tampering”. at this point we have no proof that it’s beyond this.
76ers trade Maxey to Nets, 76ers fans would hate Morey. IMO Nets need to trade Harden for some roster depth. 76ers are poised to make a playoff move if they get Harden, but not if they have to trade half their team away. Interesting stare-down between the teams.
Simmons, Seth Curry and a 1st round pick for Harden. Thats the max i would offer no Thybulle no Maxey.
Why would the Nets give their division rivals the player they need without getting something they want in return?
I am sorry Sixer fans, if you want Harden NOW, you have to give up Maxey or Thybulle. If not take your shot this summer. I think its comical that the Sixers are threatening to dump salary, gut their roster to get 33 year old James Harden. I would call their bluff.
Why Morey has staked his career on James Harden is beyond me, but its the Sixers who have been horribly mismanaged for years. Nothing new.
so then if they dont want Ben you make it a three team trade.
Simmons is gonna end up going to the Nets, moving to center and playing the draymond green role, and he’ll become a thorn in Embiids side.
And with the criticism he’s received, and the extra time away from the court, watch him come back with some type of shot.
I do worry about trading Ben to Brooklyn as far as the impact that will have on games vs them, but it’s not like you’re giving him up for nothing. anything is an upgrade over Ben not playing at all, and is what Brooklyn will get in total going to be an upgrade over Harden? And Ben is not going to shoot – I think his stepping away cements that.
I still think he’ll develop some type of shot.Just a 8-12ft fade away jumper would make him so difficult to defend. He’s 25,24 the last time he stepped on the court. And at 24-25,most people still have some stubborn hard-headed traits. He just needs the right motivation, and being called out the way he has could’ve been just that.
But as long as they’re not completely transforming the roster by giving up to much, they definitely gotta take the chance of pairing Embiid with Harden.
I also think him stepping away was more about Embiid calling him out,and Doc saying he didn’t care how they scored all year, and then benching him late in that Atlanta series. He’s dealt with the fans and media calling him out for his shooting most of his time here.He didn’t really seem to care until it was somebody he felt should’ve had his back.
@RGreen
The Sixers won’t miss Simmons or at least I most certainly won’t
He will have no impact when the Sixers and Nets play (if Simmons is traded there)
To say he would have no impact is just crazy.Yes,his shooting is an issue, but his size and athleticism is still something to deal with.Especially if he moves off the point. That’s the part of this that bugs me the most,we’re gonna end up trading him without ever atleast trying him in another role.Ofcourse they don’t really have much of a choice at this point.
Simmons,Curry and a second for Harden would be fair imo. Brooklyn becomes a better defensive team and gets another shooter. Kyrie/Curry/KD/Simmons/Aldridge would be a good squad
I’m not sure gutting your roster for James Harden works. Especially given his injury history and expected decline in the coming years.
I know the Nets come off as entitled, but since Dr. J and Rick Barry, when has that happened? I hated the KG and Pierce deal. We traded half the roster for Vince Carter after we let Kenyon sign with Denver and Richard Jefferson wasn’t going to be enough.
I didn’t really like Ben Simmons coming out of college. Now, he’s scared of the reaction Philly is going to give you? They threw stuff at Santa!
Brooklyn and New Jersey might be the only place where you can hide from big media. Ben hasn’t played in a year. Kylie is there when he feels like it. Kevin, who has won the chip, is the guy I feel for. Despite being a Net fan since 1982, and we really don’t exist, he should have went to the Knicks.
Nobody cares about the Nets in New York. I live here. I know. Some semblance of this trade will happen. Five people in New York besides me will notice.
Nets get: Simmons, Green, Joe
Thunder get: Harris, Millsap, 1st from Philly, 2nds from Bro
76ers get: Harden
Knowing Morey, he’s wanting the Nets to add 5 firsts with Harden
Nets want Maxey ……
Moreyon is holding out for less ……
They are playing chicken.
You want to keep Maxey. Then you gotta throw in 2 (#1) picks.
Ben, Green, Thybulle, Drummond, 2 picks
>>>>>>>>>>>>>FOR>>>>>>>>>>>>
Harden, Millsap
Done Deal ……
