The Trail Blazers‘ roster makeover this week has prompted multiple teams to place a call to Portland’s front office in an effort to engage in trade talks involving Damian Lillard, according to Marc Stein at Substack. However, Stein hears that those inquiries have been “swiftly rebuffed” by the Blazers.
Reporting following the CJ McCollum trade this week indicated that Portland’s plan is to reshape its roster around Lillard, and the star point guard still sounds committed to sticking it out with the Blazers. As Stein writes, there’s a growing expectation from the outside that Lillard probably won’t return from his abdominal surgery this season, with the Blazers seemingly shifting their short-term focus from playoff contention to draft positioning.
Here’s more from Stein:
- A source close to the situation tells Stein that the Rockets remain unwilling to consider a John Wall/Russell Westbrook swap unless the Lakers are willing to put their 2027 first-round pick in a deal. There has still been no indication that Los Angeles is open to that concept, says Stein.
- The Mavericks made a run at Caris LeVert before the Pacers traded him to Cleveland, but were unable to make a deal, according to Stein, who notes that the Cavaliers were able to offer better assets than Dallas. A Mavs offer may have required Indiana to take the long-term contract of injured swingman Tim Hardaway Jr., Stein writes.
- Although a trade of Myles Turner hasn’t been entirely ruled out, the big man is widely expected to remain with the Pacers through the deadline, per Stein.
- Stein says his best read of the James Harden/Ben Simmons situation is that there’s a price point at which the Nets would be willing to make a deal today, but it would be “steep” and it’s unclear if the Sixers have the appetite to meet it.
As a fan of the Cavaliers and the Celtics I really hope the Simmons/Harden trade doesn’t happen because it would help both teams. It’s amazing how greedy and stupid these 2 front offices are. They both believe they’re dealing from a position of strength, while the reality is neither team has a chance to win a title unless they trade with each other.
I disagree, the Nets can win a title as is. Philly needs Harden to be a legitimate threat out of the east.
I disagree. They may finish season and avoid playin but you still have to deal with kyrie out half of the playoff games.
Trade Kyrie then cause next year is about to be extended … Or not
Yeah because this disgruntled Harden looks great on the court.. Lol
The Nets aren’t winning a title with Harden & 1/2 of Kyrie
I think the Nets improved their team a lot today and Philadelphia got worse. Hopefully Kyrie continue to destroy team chemistry.
As a Bulls fan, I disagree. Kyrie still a part time player until the city changes their rules. Embiid has yet to dominate in games 5-7 of a series and Harden is 33 and injury prone. I would rather have Philly get him and lose Curry, Thybulle, etc. harden will implode the nets if he keeps him but Philly still will be strong
Mask mandates in NY sarting to get lifted. Broadway shows will end mandates by Apr 30. Not sure about Barclays center, but if things keep teending in this direction Kyrie will be full time by the time playoffs start.
The thing a lot of people that’s not from nyc don’t understand is kyrie can actually play home games unvaccinated. The team will have to just pay the city a fine each time he does. So in theory if the team wanted to kyrie could play every home game.
The NBA itself shut the down the nets paying fines. All teams will abide with local COVID mandates.
You have to think Harden gets dealt if there is real interest between the player and the Sixers. This standoff has to just be positioning for the best deal possible, right? If not, what are the Nets thinking? Harden can walk at the end of this year and they get nothing. Will he even play in the meantime if he’s unhappy? By the sound of things, he’s not going to be convinced to stay. what a mess.
The Nets think Harden is the key to winning a ring this year, which is hilarious. They’ll be shooting theirselves in the foot by keeping him and the letting him walk for nothing. I think they just don’t want Simmons, which is probably the right move.
How does LA think they can trade Westbrook without at least one 1st?
They should have to for anyone besides Wall. Rockets are tanking, so they would prefer nobody remotely good played this year.
Not sure what reshape the roster around Lillard means. He’s 31 and starting to descend. They’re depleting their asset base without opening up a path to cap space.

Hilarious that HOU wants draft compensation for a Wall/Russ swap…
As it is right now Russ is having an ok season… Wall hasn’t played, like at all, so we don’t know if he can ever play!
Last year Wall had a good season… Russ had a stellar season… so as far as anyone can see, HOU have to add the assets for the LAL to take on the deal as a matter of fact!
Why wouldn’t they? Nobody wants Russ, which is exactly why the pick will be attached from LAL.
