After Marc Stein reported on Monday that Jalen Brunson is more likely to stay with the Mavericks through February 10 than to be traded at the deadline, ESPN’s Tim MacMahon conveyed a similar sentiment during an appearance on Zach Lowe’s podcast, The Lowe Post.
“I have been assured that they will not move Brunson before the trade deadline unless it is, and I quote, a ‘What the bleep are they thinking?’ type of offer,” MacMahon said, according to NBC Sports.
Brunson has become an integral part of the Mavericks’ offense, posting career highs in PPG (15.7) and APG (5.6) so far this season. While he has generated plenty of interest ahead of his looming free agency, Dallas reportedly remains confident in its ability to re-sign him. However, Lowe – who previously suggested the flight risk for Brunson is “very, very real” – warns that the Mavs should be careful about how they approach those negotiations.
“The thing on Brunson is I wouldn’t mess around too much if I were the Mavs,” Lowe said, per NBC Sports. “That’s all I’ll say. I wouldn’t be too cute with the negotiating. I wouldn’t be too cute, based on what I’ve heard.”
Here are a few more trade rumors from around the NBA:
- Executives around the NBA aren’t fully convinced that the Kings are really finished with the Ben Simmons sweepstakes, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. “The Kings needed to walk away because the Sixers were unreasonable in their demands,” an Eastern Conference executive told Bleacher Report. “If Philly backs off [those demands] some, perhaps Sacramento could still make a run at [Simmons].”
- Lakers guard Talen Horton-Tucker is viewed by rival teams as a “marginal asset,” Pincus writes in the same Bleacher Report story. Even though he’s still a developing prospect, Horton-Tucker earns a higher salary than virtually every other 21-year-old in the NBA and will be able to reach unrestricted free agency as early as 2023, diminishing his value.
- Pincus adds in the same Bleacher Report story that most teams expect Damian Lillard to sign a two-year contract extension with the Trail Blazers in the offseason. That suggests Lillard won’t be asking for a trade anytime soon.
- The Celtics are open to virtually any trade inquiry leading up to the February 10 deadline, but any roster “fireworks” are more likely to happen in the offseason than this month, writes Steve Bulpett of Heavy.com. According to Bulpett, multiple sources believe that if Boston doesn’t play well in the second half, it’s possible Jaylen Brown could “acknowledge that the mix isn’t right and seek a move.”
Horton Tucker is marginal asset
I like the word Marginal
Tucker is a marginal role and his salary is one of the highest of 21 years old players in the nba history
He’s really not that good. The Lakers and their fans have tried to pump him up because they have no young players.
I believe they can sign Brunson now, and certainly before FA begins. If both sides want him there, DAL can eliminate the FA risk, and Brunson can eliminate the possibility of a trade, by simply re-upping now. There’s the matter of price, of course, but that if they’re not close enough on it to split the difference now, then mutual love is not as reported. Basically, if he gets to FA, he’s likely gone.
The Mavs are limited to four years/$56MM on an extension, so it may be a tough sell prior to free agency if he’s really seeking $18MM+ per year, as one or two reports have suggested.
True, I didn’t consider that. More than 14 mm seems steep (as he’s been a starter all of 25 games or so), but if his people are telling 18 mm is out there, then that’s enough of a difference that it makes some sense he’d wait. With that difference, probably no reason for DAL to offer it up either. Wonder if he thought 18 mm was doable before they made him a starter.
I think its more grim for Dallas here and the Knicks might be the ultimate benefactor
He’s capped now on what he can sign/extend (apparently less than he wants) and Dallas will have little cap later to compete with NYK on an open market (after they potentially flush some money this year off 23’s cap Hello Ibaka+ for Kemba)
And ofc you already know the long ties to NWK with Brunson that exists
Just another day in the park for Cuban tho as he’s had the worst ledger luck of any team and every desicion seems to be harder than it should for no fault of there own really
After the season, DAL will have full Bird rights and can offer him anything they like (up to the max) without regard to the cap. Tax is inevitable. If that’s a problem, then it’s a bigger one than losing Brunson.
Yes, many ties between NYK and Brunson. I don’t believe it will trump a good basketball situation though, if he’s in fact found that.
I’m not as high on Cuban as an owner as you are, but he certainly does want to win and is less of lunatic than many.
Yea I worded that wrong, they obv have the Bird rights, and can go however far they want into the tax, but in an open market they not only have to worry about matching the league but also that Brunson might consider all monies equal NYK the place to be next. * I think there’s some real smoke there
And then theres the question if Cuban even wants to go 20 per and into the tax to essentially still have the same team in years moving forward (with even less fluidity) , a team (in my eyes, and maybe Brunson’s as well) that has a limited ceiling. (Not that Knicks is better but man if he helped it all turn around there? He’d have statues built, he’ll never be that to the city of Dallas
No easy answer tho, trading him (or DFS) this year would probably have to have a master plan by the FO; then the hurdle of Luka signing off on it (doubt elite players ever want to downgrade a playoff year)
But that’s kinda been the story of the Luka Mavs (and even a little before that) I don’t envy them but at least they don’t have an owner that will fall behind fall guys if everything does take a wrong turn
Lunatic is Tillman Fertitta middle name. With him and GM Stone, what more can go wrong in Houston? lol
Again, Kings future is first round picks
I’d trade Hield, Bagley and two top 10 protected first round picks for Simmons
Key word Protected
So what’s in it for the 76ers?
Players and picks you have nothing right now
We are 1 game back from the top of the east. Doing quite fine without him and don’t want this offer
Shooter – Hield
Potential – Bagley
Two 11th to 14th picks
That is fair to me
Bagley has the potential to need to be paid in a few months, and he hasn’t shown enough to make ya wanna pay him.
Both of them were top draft picks that were supposed to help Sacramento get out of the lottery, and they haven’t.They couldn’t even keep their starting positions on 1 of the leagues most consistently bad teams. And you think that offer is getting a defensive player of the year candidate? The 6ers are looking for a return to help them get over the top, they’re not looking for draft picks, which is arguably the best part of that package.
You can find a third team
76ers get Wood and Hield
Kings get Simmons
Rockets get 2 Kings first round picks and Bagley
Teams can add a candy to make it work
That’s why you are a troll aka silly sillivan friend. Your constant amusing anti sixer bias and constant devaluing of Big Ben keeps true students of the game in stitches.
76ers got nothing right now and Simmons is leaving like it or not
We almost got top seed without him. And he’s going to leave like it or not once his deal expires in 4 years. Aswell wait and hold out for a good player just you’d really in the offseason
Simmons is leaving, but after the 6ers find a suitable offer….The like it or not is more for teams paying the cost to get him.He had 4 more years left on his contract, and the 6ers are still trying to win in the playoffs…Hield might start over Curry, but that’s debatable considering Curry already has rhythm with the team. And Bagley might not even see the floor in Philly, with Embiid,Harris,Drummond and Niang already eating up the minutes at the 4 & 5.
Simmons has absolutely no value to the 6ers if he’s just sitting at home. I understand them wanting more than Hield, Bagley and a couple 1sts as I’m not sure Bagley has much value either. They could possibly involve a third team though to flip the picks as I think the Wizards may be just about ready to mail it in. Send those picks along with some of their own, Green and Harris to the Wiz, send Kings Simmons, Philly acquires Hield, Kuzma, Harkless and Beal.
More like little Ben
I disagree. We have had 1st round picks forever and what has it got us ?? Any Playoffs ?? Any Championship Rings to show for it ?? Answer : Nothing, Notta, Zip, Zero !! Simmons is way overrated !! I’d rather the Kings try to get Randle & Maybe Sabonis or Turner than take Simmons !!
Plus, you have a lot of deadwood sitting on the bench, ie – Thompson, Len Harkless, Woodard, Ramsey !!
^^ King
Your Roster is No where near balanced, like Monte McNothing Done has Stated :
Your Roster
4 PF – Metu, Bagley, Woodard & Harkless
2 SF – Barnes & King
5 C – Thompson, Holmes, Jones, Queeta & Len
2 SG – Hield & Davis
4 PG – Fox, Ramsey, Haliburton & Mitchell
If you want Randle, please, take him. Send me a roll of athletic tape, two slightly used basketballs and a throwback Wayman Tisdale jersey, we have a deal!
As a Knicks fan, I have no clue why they were in such a rush to put $117M on the table after one good year knowing that you were going to be looking for a PG that would take the ball out of his hands some. If he had been good for 2-3 years, or an FA at the end of last season, I get it, but those were not the case.
Why are you so quick to give up after one bad year then?
It’s why you’re here with the other daffy folks, Silli.
Sixers hang up and block the entire Sacramento area code.

I’m reminded of JJ Barea when he was a free agent and left the Mavericks for bigger money in Minnesota.
He basically flopped because of “fit.” Fit is a huge thing in the NBA and Sports in general.
For some reason, even though Rick Carlisle is gone, Jalen Brunson is a fit in Dallas even with a new head coach. Is he a better player than j.j. Barea? Probably. Will Jalen Brunson be as good with a nice new contract on a new team? That’s the question I’m bringing up.
Maybe it’s not fair but it’s just something I’m reminded of when looking at the Brunson situation.
Brunson’s advanced numbers are great to. Have always been. He was neutral rookie year and been positive ever since. As pg’s are concerned, he ranks in top 15 Wins Above Replacement since he entered the League, which is really hard to do in limited minutes.
Somehow he is now an underdog. But he was the top HS player and won a college championship. I guess he stuck around to long in college and has been only given limited opportunity in Dallas. He was a point god as a prep player. I think he should get offers on at least 20. If Dinwiddie can even get close to 20 off injury then Brunson should start the conversations at 20.
Mavs should trade Brunson and DFS. They aren’t going to be able to resign them both and will struggle just to keep 1 of them.
THJ is out injured currently, can’t rely that heavily on Doncic. Go look for help.
Kemba and Mitch Robinson for Powell and Brunson?
Christian Wood for Brunson and Powell??
Jusuf Nurkic and Tony Snell for Brunson and Powell ??
He’s good, but in a better situation than many that allows him to put up good numbers. Whoever signs him needs to realize there’s a ceiling to his game and he needs the right situation in order to be effective. Sixers would be a good landing spot, Dallas of course, and even Boston. As for the Knicks, he’s better than what they currently have, but I think there would be more pressure on him to produce scoring wise and play the defensive tempo that Thibs prefers to play.
Wouldn’t really want him at the Sixers. Maxey is arguably better and in his second season. Plus we also have Curry and Milton
Brunson for Cam Reddish and Dal’s 2023 1st.
Separate trade, Kemba and a 2nd for Bullock.
Doesn’t fix the Mavs, but they get something of value for Brunson and they can plug both Kemba and Reddish immediately into the lineup.
I can see them dealing DFS as well, but not to the Knicks.
