MARCH 10: Cleveland has officially signed Brown, the team announced in a press release.
MARCH 9: The Cavaliers are signing Moses Brown to a 10-day deal, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
The young center played for the Mavericks this season but was waived as part of the two-for-one trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Washington in exchange for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans.
Brown, 22, had his $1,701,593 salary guaranteed for 2021/22 ahead of the January 10 deadline despite playing a very limited role for Dallas. He appeared in 26 games for the Mavs, averaging a modest 6.5 MPG. He was productive last season for the Thunder, averaging 8.6 PPG, 8.9 RPG and 1.1 BPG in 43 games (21.4 MPG).
Brown has shown he’s a strong rebounder, but possesses very limited ball skills and is often slow to rotate defensively. He’s definitely a raw, unfinished product at this stage of his career, but he’s flashed some upside and could develop with time.
It’s basically a no-risk flier on an intriguing 7’2″ prospect for the Cavs, who will be without All-Star center Jarrett Allen for an indefinite period after he suffered a fractured finger on Sunday. I’m skeptical that Brown will actually crack Cleveland’s rotation once the signing becomes official, given that the team is trying to make the playoffs for the first time in four seasons
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff has relied on Dean Wade, Kevin Love, Cedi Osman and Lamar Stevens when the team has dealt with frontcourt injuries this season, with occasional spot minutes to veteran Ed Davis. However, the Cavs have an open roster spot and if Brown impresses during his 10 days, they could sign him for the remainder of the season as injury insurance if Allen is out for an extended period.
Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com tweets that the Brown will meet the team in Miami and the plan is for him to be available for Friday’s contest against the Heat.
He’ll be a good roster-filler until Allen is back. But that’s about it. His OKC stats are much better than he really was. The guy looks lost on defensive rotations and is just very raw offensively. Just my 2 cents.
Dallas could have used a center, but they dropped him. Possibly got rejected too quickly by Doncic/Kidd for not connecting with teammates. Dallas gave up talent for him, but then hired a new coach building around Doncic.
I really liked him when I watched him play in both OKC and Dallas, I think we should promote Goodwin to a standard Contract tho and have Moses on a two-way, so he can get G-League reps too when we have all our guys
Don’t see why they can’t give him an 11 day deal if they really like him. Its just 1 more day…
Also does anyone know if he goes by Mo? Or Moses. Or something else. Asking for my friend.
He just needs to find the right fit and system. Huge amount of potential to be a Capela like guy. Just needs a chance
Why has he never attempted a 3 point shot? He could have untapped potential. This could be his key to stardom.
Man, there is more to the NBA than 3 point shots, especially for centers!
Timberwolves should give him a chance
Playing for the Thunder in 2021 Moses had that 21 point, 23 rebounds against our Boston Celtics & I thought who is this guy! When the Celtics got Moses in a trade I was delighted but nothing happened & I couldn’t figure it out.
I guess the explanation is above …”possesses very limited ball skills and is often slow to rotate defensively. He’s definitely a raw, unfinished product.”
Would like to see the Warriors use one of their 2 2-Way Contracts on a developmental Big Man like this.
Yes, I realize James Wiseman is returning from Injury soon, but what if Looney gets injured between now and the Playoffs? Would be nice to have a Big stashed down on the GLeague team.
Draymond is also returning soon but Back injuries are tricky and continuing to ask him to guard 7 Footers can lead to a relapse.
Flat out – I don’t understand why the Warriors are using Both of their 2-Way Contracts on more Guards (Chiozza and Quindary).
They already have 7 Guards on the big league roster = Curry, Poole, Klay, Moody, Payton, Lee.
Now that Moody is getting more Minutes, Lee can’t even get on the Floor. So how will either of those 2-Way guards even get any Minutes the rest of this year? Will take a lot of injuries.
Meanwhile, the team has no 7 Footers currently stashed away on their GLeague team down in Santa Cruz.
I don’t get it. If not Moses Brown, then how about a similar player? Brandon McCoy? Freddie Gillespie? Mfiondu Kabengele?
What does this do for them? They play small and with pace. Injecting some random g league big is only going to onto them down, and realistically won’t help them against someone like Rudy Gobert, let alone Jokic, Ayton, or AD if he’s back.
They drafted two forwards. That is their young talent. Wiseman will be back soon.
GSW plays a particular brand of basketball and it works because of their personnel. With this much success you’d think fans would trust the people in charge.
Memphis should of signed him
