Knicks guard Derrick Rose isn’t expected to ramp up his activity for at least one more week, head coach Tom Thibodeau said, as relayed by Steve Popper of Newsday. Rose underwent ankle surgery in December and had a second procedure last week to address an infection.
“He can’t really do much,” Thibodeau explained. “Just got to be patient, let it clear up. That’s it . . . He’s not supposed to be doing a lot right now other than follow [medical advice]. He’s been pretty diligent with that. He can walk around. He can form shoot if he’s not leaving his feet. He can’t do a whole lot right now. Hopefully in a week or so that’ll be cleared up.”
As Popper notes, Rose was with the team at shootaround on Friday. The Knicks went 30-17 after acquiring him last season, as the 33-year-old averaged 14.9 points and 4.2 assists per game off the bench. He has only appeared in 26 games this season.
There’s more from the Eastern Conference:
- Sixers superstar James Harden won’t play on Saturday against the Heat, Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets. Harden will sit as part of his scheduled left hamstring management. Philadelphia is 4-0 in the games he’s played, which includes a 125-119 win over Cleveland on Friday.
- The Knicks could benefit from the Mavericks’ crowded backcourt if they pursue Jalen Brunson in free agency this summer, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News writes. Brunson has averaged a career-high 16.0 points and 5.3 assists in 32.1 minutes per game this season. Dallas recently traded for Spencer Dinwiddie, who is under contract next season with a cap hit of $19.5MM.
- Heat guard Tyler Herro has been surging since the All-Star break, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald writes. Herro has averaged 25.8 points in his last five games, working to attack more than he was before the break. “I think people know I’m a shooter. I shoot the ball well,” Herro said. “But I think my best thing is off the dribble, getting in the paint, attacking, getting to the mid-range, getting to the rim. I think that’s what I do best. I think I’m hard to stay in front of when you’re playing the shot and then my handle gets me to where I want to go.”
Understandable for Harden not to play tonight on back to back but man I was looking forward to that game.
It’s a method to the madness. Harden sitting out. Some of the Heat players out.
Doc Rivers and Eric Spoelstra have the type of experience as championship coaches that understand to take care of the regular season, but to make sure that you don’t leave a potential postseason matchup have too much information going into a postseason series, so they’re willing to let key players sit out these type of games during the regular season.
Remember, both have learned a thing or two from Pat Riley, who is known for that.
Rank these 3 on rookie season and potential respectively
Herro
Maxey
Jalen Green
I go Jalen, then Herro then Rese. Close bw Herro & Rese but Jalen has a different level of talent. He’s gonna be Houston’s franchise player for the next decade
Tyler, jalen, maxey. Herro can shoot, drive, starting to run point if needed….really smart player….. jalen has much to prove, but no doubt has talent… Maxey better as a 2, but is a combo guard, good 3rd option on a team…
Herro
Maxey
Jalen
Jalen Tyler Tyrese
Jalen as a rookie is having a better regular season than the other two did as rookies.
However, Herro was huge in the playoffs as a rookie and Jalen won’t be able to show that.
But his potential gives him the edge.
Tyrese was super efficient as a rookie but didn’t get the role to showcase to much. However this season he’s been absolutely balling and come these playoffs will be huge.
The crazy part is Maxey was drafted 21st overall
Rookie seasons Green, Herro, Maxey
Right now, I go Herro, Maxey, Jalen Green
Potential wise, I go Green, Herro, and Maxey
Idk, it’s just hard and difficult to really compare these three players. They’re all really good in their own right, especially offensively, but for different reasons. Each of these three brings a little something different to the table.
Green, as things stand now, is a great 1 on 1, iso-style scoring talent, and at his best he’s creating for himself with the ball. Maxey is at his best off the ball and when others are setting him up for shots, but he can also go 1 on 1 as well. Herro can do a bit of it all. Herro can go iso, he can set himself up without the ball, and then he can also set up other players as an underrated passer..
As of on a basketball court right now
Maxey, Herro, Green
In 5 years Green>>Maxey=>Herro
Maxey is playing equal to better than Garland in his second year. Maxey next year will make the same leap Garland and Simon’s made this year.
Herro as a 6th man gunner is less valuable than Maxey as a pg or Green potentially as a all pro down the line. I don’t see Green shooting better than 45% from the field consistently. The difference between Maxey and the other 2 is that the other 2 love taking bad shots. Like actually prefer worse shots. Even in the article Herro mentions how much he likes the mid range which is by far his least efficient shot, I would assume.
Maxey is a big time player but he can’t shoot like Simons or Garland
Take a look at Maxeys fg pct
Reality says different. I will admit he is less of a pure shooter in terms of mechanics and fluidity but the results say different.

He takes smart shoots and has more defensive instincts than Simon’s and Garland. To me it will eventually be a wash. Garland slightly over Simon’s and Maxey but basically a wash.
These type of rookie/early career comparisons never age well.
I remember once upon a time Knicks fans were notorious for these…once trying to compare Iman Shumpert to Dwayne Wade and Danilo Gallinari to Dirk Nowitzki.
Let the guys just play and see where the chips fall where they may.
Tough loss for the Knicks last night. It’s almost worse when Randle plays well because it reminds you of how badly he’s wasting his potential. And then getting tossed of course…what a moron.
And RJ — what a ball hog. Yeah he can put up some points but I’m not sold on him long term. Guess what? If you pass the ball and let other people score it will open up space for you! Instead he holds on and takes bad shots and is celebrated when they go in.
That said, lot of credit to Suns “B-squad”. Those guys look Right.
Knicks need a professional point guard who can get everybody in there sets, Kyle Lowry type. They tried with Kemba, but they should of gotten it, why Boston gave a #1 pick to okc to get him off payroll. Kemba is a shell of himself because of knee issues…no back to backs… Randle has the skill set, but his temperment is not there, GARDEN CROWD, at times plays out of control, better as a # 2 or # 3 option on some team..If he can be moved this off season, but has no trade value with a big contract… Will have to attach draft pick to move… If he can calm down, get the ball out of his hand with a real point guard… he may be ok, but NY will move him if they can. Knicks took a step back this year, need to play kids, Reddish, develop Barrett…. Thibs is a 3 year coach, plays veterans, doesn’t develop kids, old school….Knicks will take a a few yrs to get it together…
Last year was easier to play when nobody expected you to play well. A whole different game when teams play you without letting up.
Knicks need a closer, maybe RJ in time…. May go all in this summer, get major point guard, with multiple # 1 picks, with Randle…
Brunson is coming to Detroit. No way he chooses Knicks over Pistons. Our roster and organization is in much better shape!
Personally, I hope he does go to the Pistons, and I’m a Knicks fan. He’ll be an overpayment.
When did the Knucks lose the game last night? When last year’s coach of the year subbed out Reddish for Fournier in the 4th quarter. Here it was, Cam getting hot with 2 left hand layups, able to guard Cam Johnson Cam on Cam, Toppin Randle out…OK let’s see what the new kid can do! Ehhh naw, let’s bring in FourthQuarter no way Fournier! Thibs lost the game
Thibs lost the game
Fourth quarter he cannot coach got to go.
Yes, Thibs gone…. 1 more year.. 3yr coach. First year maximize talent, this year they regress… 3rd year they don’t get better. Knicks replace him— 3 Yr coach-old school doesn’t work in NBA now, ask Stan Van Gundy.
Idk Fournier played well last night for the most part. Can’t blame a single person/player. Burks had some costly turnovers too. Just not a winning team.
Check Fournowayyouplayhiminthefurthquarterniers fourth quarter stats this season. And why not see what Reddish can offer? Thibs blew the game
Again
What’s a constant in all the 4th quarter meltdowns
Thibs
Yes, Thibs gone…. 1 more year.. 3yr coach. First year maximize talent, this year they regress… 3rd year they don’t get better. Knicks replace him, give him one more year….
Wonder if it’s more gamesmanship to not show the new look Harden gives the Sixers.
It is. See my comments above.
Knicks are 3-17 in their last 20 games. At this point, let Rose rest and don’t even bother bringing him back. He’d only hurt their lottery chances.
@ rct;
Sorry to state the obvious, but I don’t think the Mr. Thibodeau’s responsibility for some time this season has been to win games. The Knick’s weren’t going anywhere this season, and the injuries made the situation worse.
I believe Mr. Thibodeau and the FO are putting players into situations to see how they react, adjust, and produce. The objective at this point is identifying core players for the next few years.
Right so why isn’t Mr. Thibodeau playing Reddish or McBride? Why did Mr. Thibodeau make Burks the starting point guard and rarely play Quickley? Why did he replace Reddish with Fournier in the 4th quarter last night? To see how Fournier would react?
36 pts 7 ast last night against Kings.
Dinwiddie is averaging 22.2 points (.571 FG, .458 3FG) and 6.0 assists over his last 5 games.
What I don’t get. Is why Rose is not stepping in. And making Thibs start Obi. Play McBride and Cam more mins. What exactly are we playing for the 11th pick ……. Thibs is starting to weigh on me. And believe me, I can take a lot. I rather have a top 6-8 pick. There’s a player there I want ……….
Thibs should bring in D’Antoni as his offensive coordinator. They should do this for next yr. I’m serious.
Right. The odd couple. And I believe you when you say you’re serious. It only makes sense, even if what you said didn’t.
The day you understand basketball. Will be the day you understand me. And I still won’t care …….
First off the Knicks don’t have cap space next yr. Look it up. Cause writer sure didn’t.
We don’t need Brunson. McBride is just as good and better defender. We may never find out if we don’t move Randle. Randle doesn’t let anyone play point. And Thibs does nothing about it. Sit Randle and start McBride and Obi. That simple.
Hilarious ironic saying McBride is better than Brunson with your man-child comment above.
Tyler Herro cannot be stopped.
