Trae Young can gain super-max status on his extension if he’s named to one of the All-NBA teams this season, but that’s certainly no given, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic notes.
If he’s selected, Young will receive a five-year contract worth approximately $212MM. Otherwise, that figure drops to around $177MM. The Athletic polled 45 current or former voters and only eight said they would vote for Young on one of the three All-NBA teams. The Hawks’ inconsistent season is swaying those decisions more than Young’s statistics, Kirschner observes.
Young signed the extension in August.
We have more on the Hawks:
- There’s still no decision on whether John Collins will be shut down for the rest of the season, Kirschner tweets. Coach Nate McMillan said prior to Thursday’s game there’s no update on a possible return for Collins, who is rehabbing from foot and finger injuries. He hasn’t played since March 11.
- The Hawks clinched a spot in the play-in tournament with their 131-107 triumph over Cleveland on Thursday. McMillan hopes they can move up in the standings the rest of the way, Sarah Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tweets. “We had the opportunity to clinch that spot, being in the top 10, but we also have a chance to move up in these remaining games. Our approach to this game had to be such,” he said.
- Jalen Johnson entered the league’s concussion protocol, Spencer adds in another tweet. Johnson played 17 minutes against Indiana on Monday.
- Johnson, the team’s first-round pick, hasn’t received much playing time in his rookie campaign. McMillan believes he’s gotten a good education by spending most of the season in the G League, Kirschner writes. “He’s gotten a lot of minutes in the G League, and I think that’s helped him, so when he’s stepping in a moment like this, it’s not too different as far as what he has to do out there,” McMillan said earlier this week. “He’s guarding the four and five with the Skyhawks. With us, he’s playing the four position, and we’re switching him on guards. You don’t want him to think. Just play and react to situations.”
This Hawks team shows exactly why its important to maximize your chances for a ring when get a chance – the window for contention is never as wide open as you think. Thats why Im stumped at the GSW – they didnt make any moves to improve their team, and who knows how good Wiseman and Kuminga will get. Maybe they will be busts, or average players, or franchise stars. But they certainty feel a few good rotation guys short to compete with PHX.
Same goes to Memphis – they have so many assets, I hope they cash them in this summer.
Trae if he had the right pieces around him would be All NBA team be he won’t get it.
I’ve watched a few hawks games, I just don’t think the guys they have suit Traes games very well. Not that they aren’t good but I just isn’t build around him like it should.
I’ve preached for the past couple seasons they need to upgrade on the wing. Dre Hunter has won me over, when he’s fit he’s good but Hueter isn’t the guy, John Collins is nice but I don’t think he’s their guy and Capela he’s solid but unspectacular.
Maybe
Hawks: Julius Randle and Myles Turner
Knicks: Clint Capela and Isiah Jackson
Pacers: John Collins
Randle and Turner as a duo open the floor up more compared to Collins and Capela, although Collins is the better shooter. Having the paint more open allows more open cuts to the rims, more off ball picks with the bigs, and less congested finishes inside.
Having Randle also provides another ball handling and passing option. Allowing Trae to play more off ball and use the screens from Turner to either get to the rim or have uncontested catch and shoot opportunities. With Trae getting so much attention Turner will be often left open off of the screen and he can knock down shots.
Defensively Turner for Capela isnt a huge difference, Turner defends better in space and gets more blocks. Capela does congestion the paint and make it difficult for other teams. Randle is more physical but shorter than Collins. You’d possibly lose some rebounding ability from your bigs but overall as a team it won’t be awful.
I think both Turner and Randle would be a better fit and would be a sure thing every year for the playoffs.
Knicks and Pacers I think both say yes
Hard no from both ATL & Indy. Hawks would be 1 of the worst rebounding teams in the league if they swapped John/Clint for those 2 guys. John/Clint are much better roll guys in p&r too. Trae/John & Trae/Clint form nearly unstoppable p&r duos. We don’t need a guy like Randle at all. We have plenty enough ballhandlers & playmakers. John fits us way better on so many levels. You say you’ve watched a few Hawks games which I applaud. My advice would be to watch a few more. Other than not having an elite perimeter defender to help offset the below average defense that we get from Trae/Kev/Lou (we had 1 but traded him earlier this season smh) this team is built extremely well around Trae.
@sankara or you can go donavin Mitchell for bogi, huerter, 2 first round picks we in win now mode trae need another killer beside him all these nice guys we got trae need a robin an donavin mitchell an trae woukd be one of the best backcourts in league. Then id go kevin love an myles turner as my of an center k move get you 15 to 20 reboudns Myles blocking everything we will have all 5 players who csn space shoot score pg trae sg mitchell sf hunter pf love center myles turner
Don’t think Jazz would want to move Donovan and could get more than that offer anyways.
As for the rest of what you say it doesn’t make any sense and I don’t think you understand how the salary cap works
I do have Ice Trae as a lock at the 2nd All-NBA team right now…
1/ D. Murray – Luka
2/ Young – Harden
3/ Ja – Curry
This take is so bad..
It’ll be
1. Curry and Ja
2. Luka and DeRozan
3. Trae/Harden/Booker/CP3/DeJounte
My guess is Harden and Booker
Jalen Johnson is gonna be a star in this league. Anyone who ain’t on his bandwagon yet needs to go ahead & hop on asap.. Trae is def 1 of the top15 players in the NBA but obv it would help our team if we have an extra $35-40M to spend over the next 5yrs so I’m low-key hoping he doesn’t make all NBA this season… It’s very obvious that y’all haven’t learned from your mistakes & are again blind to the late season rise of these Hawks. We’re like 9-3 in our last dozen & (much like last yr) our shooters are hot heading down the stretch & into the postseason… Y’all gotta do better tho. I swear this game is not rocket science. If you missed the rise of the Hawks last season, that’s still pretty bad but, I can sorta understand it if you didn’t watch the Hawks much. The fact that so many who consider themselves basketball fans are missing it now is pretty ridiculous tbh
I did pick the Hawks to overachieve again in the playoffs but it is a low bar. If they were the 10 seed and beat the 9 seed, I’m counting that. They most definitely will not make the ECF again.
Lol well you didn’t think they’d make it last yr either so it’s a good thing I got this grain of salt on me
You wanna talk about predictions you made last year?
Honestly I just stopped teasing you cuz I felt badly for you.
If ur talking to me I definitely don’t remember whatever teasing you’re talking about. I do appreciate the honesty tho. We can talk about the predictions I made last yr tho, no prob
The Jalen Johnson NBA star prediction looks shaky.
Trae is 5th in the league in scoring and 3rd in assists. I get that the Hawks aren’t having a great year, but they’re in the playoffs with a team that would basically be the Magic if Trae wasn’t there. It’s insane to me that it appears unlikely he’ll make any of the 3 all-NBA teams.
Edit, hadn’t checked as of this morning – he’s 4th in scoring now. There’s a possibility he finishes top 3 in points and scoring as the clear leader of a playoff team, and still gets no respect.
Trae Young gets plenty of respect
He’s obv elite offensively. He’s also arguably the worst defender in the entire league. Defense matters in basketball. And you should definitely get familiar with the rest of the Hawks roster
I’m a Hawks fan and went to a couple games in the playoff run last year, so I’m extremely familiar with the team. No one says “defense matters” when they talk about guys like Curry and Harden and even Luka being among the best in the NBA. Trae is currently outpacing them in the two most important offensive categories, but is basically a fringe candidate to get all NBA 3rd team, while the above are all locks for placement. That suggests to me he doesn’t get enough respect from the media. He was also the last all-star starter selected, meaning he doesn’t get a lot of respect from his peers either. That’s what I’m saying I don’t understand. Of course we love him here in Atlanta, but he’s extremely underrated in the league’s eyes, in my opinion.
If you followed the playoff run last yr then you should remember that the Hawks won gm4 vs Milwaukee without Trae. If anyone is underrated & disrespected it’s the rest of the Hawks team, not Trae. All anybody ever talks/knows about as far as this team is Trae. John & Clint especially are ridiculously underrated.. as far as defense is concerned, even Steph is a better defender than Trae & I was highly critical of Steph’s below average defense not being more of a factor in his MVP winning races as well. I feel like versatility should be extremely important when comparing guy’s games
@sankara my guy what the hell you talking about Julius randle scored 40 an 44 on john greak freak drop 40s on john this year an capela embid treated capella like his little son averaged 33 an like 14 aint nothong underated bout them john defense is zero capela defense is average deandre ayton myles turner are better thaan capela an better defense embid cant do ayton like he do capela. John is traded my guy gallarini less athletic less speed an manages to play better d than john an how.is that possible. Also gallarani has a better offensive package can dribble the rock.john cant cant post up john cant bro u cant be serious have you ever played ball in yo life?
What a bizarre cherry pick. Yes, I remember them winning game 4…then losing the next 2 with Trae out, even though Giannis was out too. The Hawks are absolute trash without Trae, despite their ability to rally for a single win after he got hurt. Clint is a fine role player, Bogey and Danilo are solid 5th starter/6th man types, but no one is underrated except the superstar who makes the whole team work.
Phnxdsrmark u you a smart guy that man tripping lol schleink gona pull a blockbuster an get collons outta here zion, jurandle ill take any one of them over Collins either is a upgrade an ayton or Myles over capela caoela one dimensional no offense no jumper no post game has average defense. An we need another good wing to put with hunter aaron gordon, jermai grant, harrison barnes huerter need to be 7th man he cant guard good enough dermar/lavine durant/kyrie giannis/middleton tatum/brown we dont match up hunter can take one but the other left to score 40 on huerter lol
I cannot agree with you more simmons russ that dude sankara has no clue what he talking about first off john collins defense is horrible he cannot guard nobody Julius put 40 an 44 points on him 2021 randle did him so bad coach nate had to put deandre hunter on him an double team him entire playoffs cause john could not man up. an john as good as traded gallarani is a better power forward than him an he 34 years old an john like 24.john cant create his own shot cant dribble or handle the rock on a fast break cant even post up. Capela cant shoot midrange or 3 cant post up cant handle the ball. Scheinlk need either deandre ayton or myles turner at center an julius randle or zion at power forward. Randle better overall randle out here dropping 40 piece wings like trae an you want collins lmao that man stink john collins aint out here dropping 20 30 40 like julius every night. Thing about Julius randle he not scared of greak freak anthony davis kaarl anthony he love to get at that tails when they come to Atlanta john tuck his tail an force capella deandre hunter to get abused cause he scared for 125 million john traded in offseason watch. Bro we facing durant/kyre middleton/greak freak lavine/derozan tatum/brown harden/embid this garbage team we got outside of tre an deandre hunt gota be broken out we playin or out or first round an out this year. Trae need major help i also like harrison barnes or jerami grant to come into huerter a good sixth man but you gota have great defensive players to offset trae defense bogi collons huerter do not fit next to trae they defense is bad. Pg trae sg hunter sf jerami grant pf randle center Myles turner you wanna bet 10k lineup in put together will smoke this year hawks team you gota have 2 long wings to guard durant kyrie lavine/derozan greak/Middleton tatum/brown. Hunter one person that leaves huerter to get killed out there jerami grant fix that an give you another good defender an he can score off bounce 2 so thats an upgrade over huerter defense an consistent scoring
Can’t argue, that was raw.
