Thunder guard Josh Giddey and Raptors guard/forward Scottie Barnes have been named the Western and Eastern Conference Rookies of the Month for February, the NBA announced (via Twitter).
The other nominees in the West were Rockets guard Jalen Green, Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, and Thunder guard Tre Mann. For the East, the other nominees were Pistons guard Cade Cunningham, Cavaliers forward/center Evan Mobley, Nets guard Cam Thomas, and Magic forward Franz Wagner, the league announced (Twitter link).
Giddey, 19, averaged 16.3 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 7.7 assists on .466/.278/.773 shooting in 10 February games (33.4 minutes per contest). It’s his fourth straight Rookie of the Month honor for the West, as most of the league’s top rookies are in the East. He’s currently sidelined with a right hip injury and has missed the last three games for the Thunder.
Barnes, 20, averaged 15.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists on .540/.375/.781 shooting in 12 February games (31.8 minutes). It’s his first Rookie of the Month honor. The previous winners in the East this season were Wagner, Mobley, and Cunningham.
Mobley, Barnes, Cunningham, Giddey and Wagner are considered the leading candidates for the Rookie of the Year award this season, with Mobley as a strong favorite, according to Vegas Insider.
Hollinger and Chad Ford hint that Jalen Green is a bust
Top 2 picks are huge because they are your future
Two years ago, Doncic and Morant were far better than Green
Green is only 20 years old
Calling Green a bust is like saying Ja will win 3 MVP’s in his career. People are guessing.
The rockets are at fault for Greens slow start to the NBA, KPJ Wood, Tate and Gordon have dominated the ball this season passing to green as a last resort a lot of the time giving him bad looks and his bad shot selection didn’t help earlier on. He was in the convo for ROTM because he had a very strong month and is pts and % shot right up.
No one can class him as a bust until he’s had a few years to grow. I predict next season after finding his feet he’ll blow up and have a very good season. But the need to offload Wood & KPJ to get the ball to him more. He’s shown flashes, I see a lot of Levine in him. Slow start to NBA then grow to a top guy.
Predict or hope? You are a rockets fan clearly so no wonder you feel this way. No he is not a bust. But surely a mistaken pick given the way Mobley and Barnes are playing.
1st year doesn’t say somebody is a bust. I am not sure how his defense is but he could be better just on a bad team like Houston. Houston should not have drafted him since they have too many shooting guards. Should have taken Mobley because they need a strong PF more than another SG.
Can’t lie it’s more a hope. But any one who’s watched him can see he’s better than the stats are showing. Again he’s a lot like Zach. Can dunk on anyone as we saw on Gobert last night. And his 3 shot is good he just needs the ball and to make better decisions.
I agree completely comparing him to Mobley there’s a clear difference in their rookie year. But before the draft everyone was saying “Green, Mobley or Suggs for no 2” with a lot going for the latter. The draft is a gamble it paid off for Toronto OKC and the Cavs. Rockets seem to have a slow burner and Cades injuries has hampered him. But Suggs hasn’t done well. But again I put it down to the Magic game plan. He can’t play with Cole on the floor it just don’t work.
Again I see Green being a good player in the league and I think the same for Suggs they just have the bad luck of the teams they’re playing on aren’t making them their #1 option and that’s the issues they’re having.
