Quentin Grimes absorbed most of Miles McBride‘s minutes after Grimes returned from a knee injury on Friday. However, Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau will still try to find ways to play the rookie second-rounder despite having a more crowded backcourt, Marc Berman of the New York Post writes.
“I love what ‘Deuce’ has done. We’ll try to figure out how to work that out,” Thibodeau said of McBride. “He’ll probably be going back and forth. He’s done a really good job. We’ll see how this unfolds.’’
We have more on the Knicks:
- Thibodeau is focused on his team but he’s finding some time to watch prospects in the NCAA Tournament, Berman adds in the same story. “I’ll get an opportunity to watch a little bit here, little bit there,’’ Thibodeau said. “Then, when the season’s over, I’ll go back and dig in a lot deeper. It’s an exciting time of year.”
- There are some intriguing connections between Jazz star guard Donovan Mitchell and the Knicks. Mitchell was previously represented by Knicks president of basketball operations Leon Rose, while New York assistant Johnnie Bryant was one of Mitchell’s favorite coaches in Utah, Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News notes. If Mitchell comes to a point where he wants out of Utah or the Jazz are willing to trade him, Berman speculates the package would have to include RJ Barrett and multiple first-rounders.
- Feron Hunt‘s two-way contract is a two-year deal, JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors tweets. Hunt signed the contract on Friday. Hunt had 16 points and eight rebounds playing for the G League’s Westchester Knicks on Sunday.
Are we sure Thibs is talking about the tourney and not a barrel of mackerel?
Sounds like Thibs’ philosophy on giving young players PT – “A little bit here, little bit there”
One thing’s for certain, whoever the Knicks draft will waste away at the end of the bench until some late season garbage time.
Thibs would make a great politician. How can you say you love what a young player has been doing, yet have refused to give him real minutes despite numerous injuries? I don’t even blame him for not giving McBride those minutes; he hasn’t exactly earned them. But his quotes are always so over the top to the point of being disingenuous and totally meaningless.
What makes it even worse you feel that way is the fact Thibs is actually being 100% honest…lol
What’s makes it even worse than worse is that McBride has actually been bad when he’s played.
Small sample, young PG, I get it, but shooting 27% from the floor and 19% from 3 with a 5.0 PER – not the most praiseworthy #s out there
35 minutes near 15 points 9 assists 4 steals … he hasn’t even been that bad when he plays. His overall numbers are deceiving of his actual body of work in extended playing time
McBride’s per 36 are 7.4 ppg / 4.4 apg / 1.5 spg
Yeah that’s the Thibs I remember. Says one thing while doing something completely different.
The NY media loves to make stuff up! Where are they hearing this misinformation about Mitchell coming to the Knicks???
They are pointing out the connections and what it would take “if” it were to happen. It’s also a rumors site, thus everything could technically be misinformed, but it’s not because it’s ‘rumors.’
Still though, those writers just cannot help themselves, it is always [Enter star player’s name here] might be coming to the Knicks by either forcing a trade or by signing in free agency..
I guess they have to write about something, but it does get old, and I’m not even a Knicks fan…All that would do is tick me off each and every time said player really wanted nothing to do with the Knicks…Why even make it up to begin with, other than click bait?? It isn’t like those two connections to the Knicks aren’t common knowledge..
Watch now that I complained about it, Spider will be the one guy that does end up as a Knick..lol
You said it: click bait. Hooked you. (Me too.)
Agents also put news out there to try and create value for their players or start bidding wars. The info comes from all over the place. Ultimately it is a business.
Also the website is HoopsRumors, as has been pointed out. If you want the results of the trade log on to nba.com a year from now.
Something tells me you’ll still be here whining though.
You have two nicknames.
Bondy didn’t mention Mitchell’s dad works for the Mets? Spidy is always wearing the Mets jersey.
Ok, Pigs will fly, when the Knicks get a star in their prime.. Next year will be 50 years since Knicks 1973 Chamionship…. Thanks Clyde Frazier!
“We love what the deuce is doing”
I would have a hard time saying some player nicknames with a straight face.
Last year’s success was possibly the worst outcome for Thibs. I just really hope that the Knicks remain patient, continue building their core mainly through the draft, and then become opportunistic in free agency when they’re actually ready to be a true competitor…
Thibs is a great coach, and he’s an especially great defensive coach, but he does have some flaws. He isn’t the most creative offensive mind, so he requires an offensive minded assistant that’s creative, and he strongly believes in players earning their playing time.
Also, by “earning their playing time” he means playing strong defense, so ultimately, he ends up hardly playing and further developing offensive-minded rookies and second year players..
This might end up costing him his job in New York, especially if management isn’t seeing the fruits from their drafting labor being used properly…Or in Toppin’s case, hardly being used at all…
I love me some coach Thibs as a Bulls fan, but he just hasn’t progressed from some of the same issues and mistakes he made in Chicago…He better learn fast though, because him winning last season really only sped up his own clock, fairly or unfairly…
Signing Fournier and Walker while not playing any of your draft picks is not remaining patient. They went into win now mode two or three years too early.
Grimes has been significantly better than McBride when they’ve played, so it makes sense he would take the minutes. I, like a lot of Knicks fans, had somewhat high hopes for McBride coming into the year – he hasn’t got a ton of run, but the minutes he has he’s put up pretty terrible numbers. Hopefully he’ll improve going into next season, we’ll see.
As far as Mitchell … I mean, c’mon. This is CTRL+C CTRL+V stuff. RJ + multiple firsts for a [insert top 25 (but not top 10) player] here … whoa!
But Mitchell and Randle will get NY just about as far as Dame and Randle would – to the 4 seed and *maybe* the conference semis. I’d rather move Randle and let RJ try out being a #1 option for a season.
Nobody said this was going to be a quick rebuild… If they can get value for Randle, they should do it, but Randle may not have that much value in NBA circles, not a cheap contract…
