Hope seems to be fading that Knicks guard Derrick Rose will play again this season, according to Marc Berman of The New York Post. Coach Tom Thibodeau indicated over the weekend that Rose was making progress, but his tone was more pessimistic in a media session Monday night, pointing out that Rose still hasn’t been cleared for contact.
“The main thing is we want him to go step by step,’’ Thibodeau said. “He hasn’t taken contact on. He’s ramped up his conditioning but hasn’t taken contact on. That’s a big thing.’’
Rose hasn’t played since having surgery in December to remove a bone spur from his right ankle. He underwent a second procedure in late February after developing an infection in the surgically repaired area.
With just six games remaining and the Knicks having little chance to qualify for the play-in tournament, they may decide to play it safe with Rose. He’s under contract for two more years, although the 2023/24 season is a team option.
There’s more from New York:
- Quentin Grimes had to miss a second consecutive game Monday with pain in his right knee, Berman adds. There may be concerns that he returned too soon after suffering a dislocation in the knee February 25.
- Julius Randle played in the second game of a back-to-back Monday despite a sore quad, but he remained on the bench for most of the fourth quarter and finished with just five points on 1-of-9 shooting, Berman writes in a separate story. Randle, who has been engaged in feuds with fans and the media this season, was criticized by MSG Network’s Wally Szczerbiak for not celebrating on the court with his teammates after the game, but Thibodeau came to Randle’s defense. “You can play well when you didn’t shoot well. His 13 rebounds was huge,” Thibodeau said. “A lot of guys wouldn’t be playing. He wants to play. I have great respect for that.’’
- Mitchell Robinson had his second straight impressive performance against the two teams that talked to the Knicks about acquiring him at the trade deadline, Berman notes. After blocking five shots Sunday against the Pistons, Robinson posted 16 points and 12 rebounds in last night’s win over the Bulls. Those could be two teams to watch when Robinson enters free agency this summer.
Mitchell Robinson would be great for the Bulls
Sign and trade for Brunson makes a lot of sense between Mavs and Knicks.
We’re really still getting Derrick Rose updates? What difference does it make? Knicks season has been over for a few weeks now.
Congrats RJ on reaching 20 pts a game! With Randle no longer being overrated someone had to come in and fill that void.
Can’t wait to hear about how many Brinks trucks it will take to secure mediocre Mitchell Robinson for the next 6 months….
The Knicks being a bad team has never stopped fervent discussion surrounding them in media, and never will. Best to get used to it, and ignore as you see fit.
Let me break down the year’s news cycle for you. The Knicks have an interesting team this season with some new players/approach. Look the Knicks are doing well and are going to make the playoffs this year, but where could they find some help. There are some struggles happening and blame should be pointed at *insert name*. There is some internal strife and it’s holding this team back from its potential. Trade deadline coming, *insert each and every name in rumors* could be good on the Knicks. They didn’t improve the team and playoff contention is slipping away if it hasn’t already, so have we mentioned coaching and management are on hot seat yet, or should definitely be replaced? Which star players can this team acquire to join or replace their current ones? Free agency coming, everybody who is a marquee name could be joining the Knicks. How did they not land *insert marquee free agent name*? They made some interesting moves, should make for an intriguing season.
I’m happy to talk about the Knicks and they do have an interesting team in some ways, but Derrick Rose is not one of those ways. I don’t even think of him as a Knick at this point.
Randle is no longer overrated? RJ is overrated? What are you talking about? Even with Randle getting downgraded, he is still much worse than people who don’t watch him think he is. Poor spacing, ball-dominant, bad shot selection, iso-ball, makes everyone around him worse.
And how in the world is RJ overrated when he is never included on any list of NBA rising stars? I’m not saying he’s great or anything, but no one even rates him. The Athletic recently had a list of the best players in the league under 25 and despite including around FIFTY players, RJ was not even on the list. They also had a list of the top 125 players in the league, no RJ on that one, either. Not sure how it’s even possible for him to be overrated.
I can’t remember the last time I read or heard something positive about Randle, so I don’t feel like he is overrated anymore, or even rated at all. Most if not all Knicks fans I know want him gone yesterday. Last year he got a giant contract. So he was overrated at one point in time.
RJ may not be overrated by the media but Knicks fans won’t shut up about him. Maybe for the reasons you outline. I’m still not sold and think he plays too selfishly. But I guess he is homegrown and someone to be excited about.
At this point there is no reason to rush D Rose. Let him rest till next season. And let Deuce McBride start for the rest of the season, i cant stand Burks at PG anymore lol
Hope seems to be Fading ????
WTF is this. Romeo n Juliet nonsense.
Go and get that lottery pick. Thibs can’t actually think 12th seed is any better than the 8th seed. Geezzzz the young guys are winning. Imagine that. Should of been playing them long ago. I pray everyday Randle gets traded at draft. It will be best draft day EVER …..
Do you need that number for Hooked on Phonics???
JR is a real pro, NYK never know when they have something good… until they lose it that is, right?
Randle signed for Less than market value. Based on year he had.
Even now only Giannis, Embiid, Jokic, Randle avg 20 n 10. Randles issues are mental. He can’t handle not being treated like a star. He’s a good player who can play great at times. NY is not for him. We just want him to play his best. Not all the drama. This is where it is today ……….

“Nobody can pinpoint the exact cause of Randle’s odd behavior but it’s not hard to imagine Randle feeling betrayed — perhaps rightly — by the fans turning on him early in the season after a slow start. There could be potential jealousy over RJ Barrett winning over the fans, too. The Garden has chanted Barrett’s name even during games when Randle is by far outperforming him.
Whatever it is, something’s not right.”

His time is up with Knicks. We are trying to build a team. We can’t have this selfishness affect the process. Play hard, play your best, play a team gm. And you will be accepted anywhere. All this other stuff we don’t need. Wish him the best….. bye
@KnickerbockerAl
So you’re saying Randle is a “star” because he averages 20 points and 10 rebounds? He’s a compiler on an atrocious team. For someone who talks so much &$%! about your superior basketball acumen, this one is really a head scratcher…
And LOL, “less than market value”! Thanks for the laugh!
