The Knicks had several opportunities to trade Alec Burks ahead of last month’s deadline, but the deals fell apart because New York kept pressing for additional draft assets, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Among the proposals was a three-way trade involving the Lakers and Raptors that would have sent Burks and Cam Reddish to L.A., Talen Horton-Tucker and Nerlens Noel to Toronto, and Goran Dragic and the Raptors’ 2022 first-round pick to New York, sources tell Fischer.
Those talks reportedly collapsed because the Knicks insisted on getting more draft picks, which doesn’t surprise one unidentified Eastern Conference executive who spoke to Fischer.
“They are always trying to squeeze out an extra second-round pick here and an extra second-round pick there,” the executive said.
Since the failed trade, Reddish has been lost for the season with a separated shoulder, while Dragic – traded instead to San Antonio – reached a buyout with the Spurs and signed with the cross-town Nets. The Knicks are still without a reliable point guard and are expected to pursue one in free agency this summer, with the Mavericks’ Jalen Brunson likely to be a prime target.
Burks has been filling in at point guard after injuries to Kemba Walker and Derrick Rose, but New York approached the deadline searching for an alternative. Burks, who will turn 31 this summer, is under contract for a little more than $10MM next season and the Knicks hold a team option on his $10.49MM salary for 2023/24.
Kicks will bocker
What a shame. Could’ve been great for the Knicks to get back a 1st rounder and dump those two contracts all at the same time. All because of a second rounder, possibly. Ugh.
Man Cam Reddish was almost free from Thibs smh
What’s wrong with the Knicks wanting additional draft picks. Sounds to me, like the executive is just crying. Every team values players differently. Clearly Knicks value Burks more then what was offered.
Because knicks want more than what the market value a player. Is burk worth what the knicks want probably not. They got a first for a decent vet and ok young player. It their lost
They were being cheap and trying to squeeze out extra picks when they weren’t exactly warranted, and as a result got nothing, just like the article said. Knicks being the Knicks, per usual.
Value of players is like real estate, it is set by the buyer not the seller… no one cares the value NYK gives to Burks all that matters is what others are willing to pay for him, right?
Otherwise is like your dingy apartment that you ask like 5 millions for it, & surprise it ain’t selling, ’cause it is overpriced! So the same with Burks or any other player!
And like a seller of a house the Knicks have a right to refuse an offer, if they value the house(player) more then the offer.
The deal noted in the article was basically Burks + Reddish for Dragic and a 1st.
I would make that deal either. Burks is better than Dragic at this point in their careers and what’s the sense in flipping Reddish again so soon for a pick, especially when they just gave up a pick (and Knox) to get Reddish?
You forgot dumping Noel’s contract as well as Burks. Dragon is a FA at the end of the year and off the books. Clearing cap space and recouping the first rounder for Reddish is a win in my book.
Fair, but I suppose that depends on your opinion of Reddish—I might have a more nuanced take on Cam if Thibs ever played him, but that’s another story.
Not a fan of Noel’s contract but I’m also not in a huge rush to get off of it either. He only has one guaranteed year left, which actually makes his contract more valuable if you hold onto it thru this season.
And Burks is a solid wing player and + defender, shooting 38% from 3, who would actually be a real asset for a team with a chance to actually win; he’s making 10M next year and a 10M team option the following.
Team option is key to me, because a contending team could trade for him next season, get a look at him as a rotation piece, then decide if they want to lock him down the following at the reduced price.
Nah, it’s actually Burks, Cam and Nerlens for Dragic and a 1st from a playoff team. Why would anyone want to do that?!
Goran would have likely wanted a buyout to pursue a chip, Noel barely played this year due to injury, but what are they planning with Mitch? You need that insurance (for next year) if Mitch walks. And you flip Cam for another draft pick…kinda pointless.
It’s annoying ppl saying the Knicks messed up or are being greedy or dysfunctional. That’s not the case with this. And to your point, Burks is better than Goran at this stage of their careers and if he didn’t have to play point, he would be more effective as a 6th man of sorts.
From the way I see it, you give up 3 rotational players for a late round 1st? No thank you!!
B69^ initially said *would NOT agree*
It is a tight call but I would like to see Burks on the Lakers, and how he does with James. He could change the game on a playoff team, but is like a starting spare part on NY! Next year, Reddish could be the defender they miss.
The Knicks were right to ask for more… LA wins this… Toronto, depends, they took another path.
LA may know what happened with THT.
Yup meant to type “I would not make that deal”
Agreed, Burks might have become LA’s 3rd best player had they nabbed him at the deadline lol. Either way he seems like the type of player to thrive next to LBJ – can defend, shoot decent, and also create off the bounce if needed.
Dragic saying Thank you Lord. It seems like the same thing over and over, no true plan and direction, quibbling over second round picks, nickel and dining to save cap space and then doing squat with it. This is not the Coach to rebuild with so just nothing making sense. Maybe they know they’re getting Mitchell and/or Towns and are building a plan around that but if not they seem off the mark with all their recent decisions from draft moves to contract extensions never mind actually making a bold trade.
This is insanely stupid. They trade a first-round pick for Reddish, who their bonehead coach refuses to play (only 20 minutes and 3 appearances over 12 games after the trade), then have a chance to get their first back while picking up a comparable player to Burks, send out an injured big man too, and they pass it up because they wanted another second.
I’m not a Knicks fan thankfully, because if I was I’d be livid to read this.
As a Knicks fan this is actually encouraging – unless you still think it’s 2015 and we’re talking about that Dragic? Dude’s 35 now and has a 9.0 PER in BK.
And to give up a 1st to take a flier on Reddish then flip him a month later … for a 1st … makes no sense?
This seems like a non-story to me
To think they have up a first to get Reddish, this doesn’t really surprise me.
It would’ve been like straight swapping Bullock and Noel for Dragic which I mean isn’t a bad deal but I mean I’d probably ask for a second round pick.
Lakers would’ve won the deal adding in Reddish who is better than THT and also getting Burks for nothing.
I mean from a neutrals stand point why didn’t the Lakers come back and say we will give you a second round pick if we can swap Reddish or Burks for Kemba.
Then the Lakers could be more aggressive in trying to deal Russ, knowing they have Kemba who can slot in straight away as a starting point guard.
Burks would be ideal paired with Westbrook, offering an ideal on-court alternate PG.
Westy isn’t going anywhere; What makes anyone think a decent deal for him is out there?
Comical take. If NYK don’t agree to a trade exactly as proposed by LAL and TOR, then it must be that they’re trying to squeeze out an extra second-round pick. Burks and Noel have good contracts, which can be trade assets this summer. Of course, Dragic could have been used in a S&T this summer, and would likely help more this year. Still, the 3 guys were worth more than just him and a single 1st in the middle of the draft.
Especially considering NYK just gave up a 1st for Reddish.
I’d be interested to hear what other lucrative offers the Knicks turned down for Burks. As it seems this is the only one noted and seems like, if anyone, LAL dropped the ball—the Knicks were toast by the deadline.
Keeping Reddish and going all in on a lottery pick made more sense than a “stretch run” w/ a 35 yr old Goran.
Funny, the typical initial reaction is to wonder about Rose quibbling over a second, but maybe he should have quibbled over more!
Really it was all about cap relief… give the FO some room to work with, or sign Robinson.
It sounds like Burks is not popular.
Maybe he did. Additional draft assets can mean anything. Burks is not unpopular with the Knick FO (at least). It was (and is) a numbers game on the wing. 5 wing guys who warrant minutes is too many. Burks was the most logical to move in a lost season. But the rest of the deal has to make sense, and this one didn’t.
Yikes. Hug your friends who are Knicks fans close tonight. They’ll need it after reading this.
Lolz
Noel played 1 game this season? Good contract? Good contract? Good for what?Good for Noel that’s about it.
Well, since you don’t understand even the basics of the NBA game, it’s not surprising that understanding the value of NBA contracts is beyond what you’re capable of. Certainly not worth my time to try to explain it to you.
Oh yeah you’re correct Noel was a great signing, what was I thinking?
Rather Cam ….. Noel alone is worth more than that. This is comical. You forget what he did when Mitch went down.
If only there was a FA who could play PG last yr. And one who knew NYC and MSG. And was a CLOSER …….. If only ????
link to nba.com
Does it again. Geez seems like those rumors out of Washington were totally baseless. Imagine that. Writers writing bs.
33 mins. 22 pts, 4 reb, 3 ast, 3 stl
If only I ran the Knicks. If only ????
I wouldn’t have taken that trade either, a middlin 1st for Reddish? Un-uh
Umm, isn’t that what Atlanta got for Reddish?? Pretty certain a “middling 1st” is exactly what his market value has been set at
They got a 19-20 pick inn1st rd. Plus Knox. Worth it to us. What makes think Cam be a 22 yr old is done. He’s signed for another yr. He will get his chance. You really should try and think for yourself. Stop believing everything they feed you.
Um, How about you take your own advice and start thinking for YOURSELF. Also, who is “they”? The media? You sound like youre speaking with tinfoil on your head.
I dont care what “they” say, Cam simply isn’t that good, and thats validated by the fact thay his value around the league is LITERALLY a late 1st rounder. That’s not me speaking, it’s OTHER GMs. I don’t care if Cam is 22, or 42, his hype has always been greater than the sum of his game. Also, Cam got 23 minutes a game in Atlanta!! How much more does he need to “prove” himself?! But sure, go ahead and delude yourself and think he hasn’t gotten a chance to showcase his skills or play yet. There’s a reason your dinosaur head coach refused to play him when healthy, and there’s a reason literally NO OTHER TEAM was willing to offer a 1st rounder for Cam, other than the Bricks. It’s because he’s really NOT THAT GOOD. So if by “they”, you mean literally every other GM around the league, and scout, then sure, I guess I’m believing everything “they” feed me.
FFS, this guy couldn’t even get playing time ahead of Evan Fournier and Alec Burks. But IM the one whose not thinking for myself?? Lol, Al, you’re going senile.
Yeah you spoke to them I’m sure. I doubt you ever bounced a ball. I’m sorry for even thinking you could understand.
There’s one thing everyone here by now Knows. Is I am my own. I don’t need talking heads or click junkies to inform me. I got talent vision. Something they skipped when they made you.
Who cares what anyone thinks about Can. Especially a wannabe like you. He’s going to get his chance. This is not even a topic for 2 yr olds. I doubt you know his history. All that matters is he will get his shot.
How is that a bad thing. Only scrubs and haters who do t get it or just want to hate. Can find this negative. Must feel good to hate on a 22yr old.
Couldn’t get playing time.????
How ignorant are you. It’s a new team new coach. Why would he play. And definitely not sitting Fournier. Too bad he got hurt. Cause then he would show what an Aaa you are.
Typical Knicks
How in the world were the Lakers gonna get Burks and Cam for THT ? That makes no sense
Was that suppose to say Burks and Kemba to LAL?
Just one of the litany of things wrong with the article…
Knicks Reportedly Missed Out On Chances To Trade Alec Burks
Noooooooo!!!!!
I refuse to accept this
Brunson leaving Dallas and Doncic very unlikely.
Ah man, I know they just got Reddish but could have dumped Burks and Noel while picking up a 1st.
Yeah, the Knicks probably could have handled that a little better but none of these players would have really moved the needle. I think I like Burks over all those other players anyway. I know Dragic has had a better career but he is old and not gonna make a difference for the Knicks anyway. The draft pick would have been nice but it is still the Knicks who have to make the pick. We all know how that goes. Lol
So the Knicks would have been trading their 1st for the Raptors 1st, which is a worse pick. I wouldn’t have done the move either bc THT isn’t a value upgrade over Cam Reddish.
Like the the Knicks don’t want Cam, I’d like for the Sixers to try and make a deal for him in the offseason.
No, they traded Charlotte’s 1st for reddish.
So here’s some real info. You can actually look up. Like always I have to teach ….
Olynic is under contract for two more yrs at 12 mill. Yet last yr Noel had a much better yr and is younger. He’s injured and needs surgery. But at 8 mill a yr. He’s not overpaid. Get knowledge please …..
Yeah but he fu***** sucks.
What is the knowledge there.
N.Noel PER 12, BPM -2 for 2/$17
Gibson PER 12, BPM -2 for 2/$10
Olynyk PER 16, BPM +1 for 3/$37
All parttime, all starting this year.
I’ll take Olynyk, at least I want him in.
Don’t introduce stats, numbers are not Albert’s strong suit, he’s just out here “dropping knowledge” on all of us, yo.
