Patrick Beverley felt the contract extension offer he received from the Clippers before they traded him last offseason was “borderline disrespectful,” he said on J.J. Redick’s “The Old Man and the Three” podcast (hat tip to Darryn Albert of Larry Brown Sports).
“Me being there from the beginning, I’m thinking that this contract extension, I’m thinking it’s going to be easy. I walk in and they throw me a number that I felt was borderline disrespectful,” Beverley said.
Clippers executive Lawrence Frank worked out an amicable solution by trading him to Memphis, who then shipped him to one of his top destinations, Minnesota. Beverley signed a one-year extension with the Timberwolves last month.
We have more on the Los Angeles teams:
- LeBron James carried the Lakers to victory over Washington on Friday with another 50-point performance, and coach Frank Vogel wonders if James best suited to be a center at this stage of his career, Dave McMenamin of ESPN writes. “Maybe after all these years, him playing center was really the best way to utilize him,” Vogel said. “Because that’s where he’s been doing it, by playing the center position with (Anthony Davis) out. Doing whatever the team needs to win games. And just an incredible, unbelievable, epic performance by LJ.”
- Reggie Jackson lavished praise on Clippers fans, calling them the heart of the city, Mirjam Swanson of the Orange County Register writes. “I understand what it is in this city, it definitely is overwhelmed by Lakers fans. But I feel like Clippers Nation is like the heart,” he said. “It truly is L.A. It’s more so. No shot to them over there, but they’re the lights. They’re bright lights. They’re Hollywood. That’s the Lakers. … But I feel like we’re definitely the heart of the city – or that’s something we want to embody.”
- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope felt that getting traded by the Lakers was almost inevitable, as he told Mark Medina of NBA.com. “Every single year with the Lakers, I was in trade talks,” Caldwell-Pope said. Kyle Kuzma, who was also a part of the Russell Westbrook deal, said he’ll always have a place in Lakers history. “I’m cemented as a winner, and I’m cemented as a Lakers champion,” he said. “For me, it’s not about ‘what if.’ It’s time to move on. It’s time to improve my game.” The Lakers honored the duo with a video tribute on Friday, according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.
- The Lakers are suffering from “organizational fatigue” due to the demands of putting a championship-caliber team around James, according to Brian Windhorst of ESPN (video link). Windhorst doubts GM Rob Pelinka can do anything significant to fix the team’s issues this offseason, since the Lakers have already dealt most of their assets. “They have nothing they can really trade of huge value,” Windhorst said.
I love when players get offered millions to play but say the offer was disrespectful because they feel they deserve more.
That’s pretty shortsighted… no matter what you do for work you want to get paid something comparable to your peers and performance. Whether you flip burgers or an average major league sports player.
“organizational fatigue” that’s a new one. One more journalist to avoid
made me laugh too what a lame excuse. Every team is being demanded a championship year. Think of the poor Knicks.
You don’t already avoid Windhorst? What were you waiting for?
You could play LeBron at any position & he’d be great. His performance last night was one of the best of his career (regular season) & obviously that’s saying a lot bc he’s been ridiculously great ever since the 1st game he played in the league .. Kuzma has another place in Lakers history as the guy that THT viciously dunked on last night
Then why did you leave him off of your Olympic squad? Don’t be a hypocrite
Lol in what way am I being hypocritical at all? Bron is right there with Wilt/Kareem/MJ as the greatest player in the history of the game in my opinion. That don’t mean he’s gonna be on the Olympic team when he’s 40. If he wants to play I could see him on the team but chances are much higher that he’s done with FIBA basketball
You know what I meant…don’t twist my words.
Lebron has still got it and if he is the best player in the league now there is no reason to think he won’t still be in 2 years.
Also if global politics reaches its nadir we could be talking about games with significantly extra meaning involved. Lebron would literally be fighting for our country…you think he would turn down the chance to be a hero?
I think what people do not talk about is how LeBron outside shooting has only gotten better the older he gets. He used to not have that 3 point shot in his early years. He saw how Curry and Durant outside shot made them tough to guard so he worked on it.
Exactly. Even older players who adapt with regard to their athleticism (e.g. save energy and change speeds when driving to the rim) don’t always have elite shooting to go with it.
Not to mention the IQ that comes with first of all being very good to begin with, but also with the experience that comes from doing the same thing at a high level for 20 years.
Bron has tightened up his 3pt shot throughout his career but what people really should have been noticing & talking about for over a decade is how much he improved as a shooter in his 2nd season. As a rookie he was clearly a beast, best player on his team & 1 of the best hs to NBA guys ever. But his shot was erratic. He’d be on some nights from deep but off on more nights. He didn’t have confidence in his shot. It was extremely obvious that that was the weakest part of his game and there were SOOOOOOO many haters that loudly & proudly proclaimed he would never be a shooter and that he’d be easy to guard & he was lazy and other slick racist stuff that is still said about him & countless other NBA players today. The boy came back in yr 2 & if I remember correct (it’s been awhile) he came right out the gate in yr2 knocking down treys at a much higher pace & much more consistent and accurate than his rookie season. Now I knew right from the 1st few possessions of watching Bron in hs that he would be a great NBA player. It was extremely obvious & tbh his talent continues to be extremely obvious. But once he started knocking down treys like he did in his 2nd season I could tell that he was gonna be 1 of the very best to ever play. His 3pt shot was already tight by the time KD & Steph got in the league. Going to Miami and playing with better players meant that he could take better 3s & his % went way up but he has been getting progressively better as a shooter ever since he was a teenager. People always talk about Ray Allen’s huge trey at the end of regulation in gm6 vs SAS but nobody should forget what Bron did in gm7 a few days later. Spurs concentrated on keeping him out the lane & dared him to shoot all game & he obliged by knocking down shots all game, including the game winner over Kawhi under a min to go.
I rarely know what you mean. Nonsensical would be the 1st word that comes to mind when describing your comments. This particular one might just be the most nonsensical. You clearly just watched Space Jam. That’s the only obvious thing I get from what you just said
Maybe if you spent more time reading books and less time insider trading with your frat buddies you’d be able to speak the language of the people.
Don’t blame me for Your problems!
Insider trading with my frat buddies.. wow
Yes I can read people and judge their character pretty quickly. Even without your multi million dollar schools
Kind of a backhanded compliment there by lil’D.
Though I would support a BS in BB observation for Sankara!
Kuzma is far better than Westbook.
Is Westgbrook playable at final 5 minutes of the game?
Final 5- No, no business being in there when the floor tightens up
Rockets aggressively pursue Westbrook last month.
Aggressively
This is just plainly untrue. Why would the Rockets try to get Westbrook? Sure, if someone attached picks to him they’d be interested but they are not the ones seeking a trade.
2014-2019, Lakers have 4 top-4 picks
Randle 7th
D-Lo 2nd pick
Ingram 2nd pick
Ball – 2nd pick
Hunter – 4th pick
Should the Lakers rebuild with picks this decade 2021-2030?
If you are a big market, you are not supposed to tank.
They made good picks but trading for AD brought 1 title. It does not seem it will happen again. Being a Celtic fan it could not be more glorious.
Except the fact Celtics were stacked with assets, made no moves and haven’t won a championship since 2008
The future is way brighter in Boston. In Brad we trust!
The did not waste their assets on day to day AD or 33 year old James Harden. Brown, Williams 2, Smart and Tatum will win a Title.
I wonder if and when his career is done… LeBron will realize what a mistake it was to leave the Miami Heat… yea I get he wanted to win a title for Cleveland.. but think how many more rings he would have today… outside of Bosh’s health.. the Heat have been in contention almost every year. The Heat are the only team that he’s ever played for that was able to handle both his ego and his talent…. and that’s partially why he quit on them.
His brand was underpressure too, even internationally. It could happen again, as mad as Laker fans seem to be!
What day is stupid take. He brought a championship to his hometown and then moved on to Los Angeles and brought a championship to them.
Side note: HBO allows free viewing of ep.1 of “Winning Time”, and ex-Clip-boss Donald Sterling takes a hard jab. So do some others… Jabbar & West several times tho they aren’t depicted hurting anyone… So far the show is more comedic than dramatic, “funny” as LA is; early on, broadly so.
The Earvin J actor has the right mix of smiling mouth and un-smiling eyes… eyes that, eventually in maturity, would stay pretty angry in general. This series is not very political so far, but race is naturally a part, and there are awards to win for the writers later on.
All you had to do was not mention race and it would have been a top commenter level comment. It seems to be a compulsion or something for you.
I also am excited about winning time though I think my freaky Friday idea appeals to a larger demographic i.e. more $
I bet you think x% lives matter…
