Having appeared in his 50th game of the season on Thursday, Mavericks guard Spencer Dinwiddie has earned a $1.5MM bonus, tweets ESPN’s Bobby Marks. Since that bonus was considered unlikely this season and will now be considered likely in 2022/23, Dinwiddie’s cap hit for next season will increase from $18MM to $19.5MM, Marks observes.
Dinwiddie’s ability to reach the 50-game threshold could have additional financial ramifications beyond this season’s $1.5MM bonus. As Marks explains, the point guard’s contract includes language that calls for his third-year salary to become fully guaranteed if he appears in at least 50 games in each of the first two years of the contract.
For now, that 2023/24 salary – which will be worth at least $18.9MM and could get as high as $21.4MM via incentives – is partially guaranteed for $10MM. The remainder would become guaranteed if Dinwiddie plays at least 50 games in 2022/23.
Dinwiddie’s $1.5MM bonus is the second-highest individual incentive to ever be earned, according to Marks (Twitter link), who says Andrew Bogut‘s $1.9MM bonus in 2015 for All-Defense honors holds that record.
Here’s more on the Mavericks:
- Before Dallas traded Kristaps Porzingis to Washington on deadline day last month, there were rumors that the Mavs and Raptors were discussing a possible deal. Appearing on The Lowe Post podcast with ESPN’s Zach Lowe, Tim MacMahon of ESPN shared a little more information on that rumor. “My understanding is their discussions there were (Goran) Dragic and Gary Trent,” MacMahon said (hat tip to RealGM). “Toronto understandably said, ‘We’re not giving up Gary Trent Jr.'”
- MacMahon also provided more details on why the Mavericks were motivated to move Porzingis and why they were satisfied with a return of Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans for Porzingis and a second-round pick. “The Mavericks basically got to the point of ‘Hey, financially it’s a wash, but it’s two smaller contracts that would be easier to move,'” MacMahon told Lowe, per RealGM. “And they felt like K.P. was kind of in the way and those two guys could fill roles off the bench, so they pulled the trigger as soon as they found a deal where they didn’t have to give up a first-round pick. A lot of that was that the fit with K.P. wasn’t there. It doesn’t mean Porzingis necessarily did anything wrong. The Mavericks took a huge swing and a miss on him. It didn’t work out.”
- In a conversation with Sam Amick of The Athletic, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd said he believes he’s grown since his days of coaching the Nets and Bucks. “I learned a lot from Frank (Vogel),“ said Kidd, who was on Vogel’s staff as a Lakers assistant before being hired by Dallas. “Don’t worry about the small stuff. If there’s something to address, address it.”
I’m wondering if the fact that KP hasn’t become the superstar that he absolutely should/could be (& may still become) will make teams shy away from drafting Chet Holmgren with the top pick. Specifically if a team like NYK was to get that pick. Moreso than for most other teams I feel like Chet might fit NYK more than Jabari/Paolo/Mathurin/Ivey but man it would be tough to take him #1 after KP, who is arguably a better, taller version of Chet, failed to live up to the hopes and dreams as the #4 pick
It’s health and attitude. If KP had one or both of health and or a good attitude then he would be living up to the expectations. Chet seems to have both so he should be fine plus like Evan Mobley, the floor is always higher if you actually like playing defense and are good at it.
What do you think is wrong with KP’s attitude? I feel like KP is very good defensively & seems to like playing d as much as Mobley, Chet or anybody else. Health has definitely been the major factor in him not being one of the best players in the league. But he was pretty much injury free until his 2nd yr in the league. It’s hard to predict whether a guy will be injury-prone or not. One way to try to make a semi-educated guess is to look at body type & obv Chet has similar body type to KP. Family history is also a way to predict & Chet’s father had to quit basketball bc of his own bad knees in the 80s.
Or you could lok ay the HR comment section and see how many posters thought NY’s unicorn was a little fritzy… Is Holmgren and big city pressure not a match? Then not the same. People are skinny at that age, in general, nothing to get from that.
Agree with QB1 tho IDK Holmgren much.
Dallas is gonna need to eventually bring in another big time player to help Luka get over the hump. It’s not gonna happen in the draft unless they’re really smart & lucky at the same time bc they’re prob gonna be drafting in the 20s for the rest of Luka’s career. Gonna be pretty impossible to acquire a big time player in free agency for the foreseeable future with all these guys making 8figures (Luka/THJ/Dinwiddie/Dorian/Bullock/Powell/Bertans) plus Brunson about to be unrestricted. Nico Harrison is gonna have to work some magic on a trade at some point if this team is gonna make some noise in the postseason. If/when Luka goes thru his 3rd postseason with zero series wins the pressure is go way up as far as getting him his Pippen
Luckily the thunder are 1st round pick whor es lol. Dallas will draft player okc wants then trade that player and bertans for like a top 55 protected 2nd. Boom, that clears that contract.
Carlise still wants Powell and thj. So a deal can be made there.
Maybe you sign and trade Brunson for picks and for an expiring contract and keep spencer.
I think the plan is to get Jokic as a UFA in 2023.
I sorta love this plan but I feel like the chances of success are around 1-3% at most lol. Adding a couple of Dallas guys this summer like Julius Randle & Marcus Smart would be much more doable & tbh a Luka/Jokic led team would have major issues defensively no matter who the other 3 guys on the court are. Knicks are gonna want Brunson badly & Randle could prob be acquired for him in a s&t if the Mavs throw in Kleber. Smart would be the perfect backcourt mate/bodyguard for Luka & the arrival of Derrick White probably makes him more expendable to Boston. It would be extremely hard for them to shed enough salary to be a player in 2023 free agency tho, way too many big contracts. Plus Jokic not going anywhere
Jokic and Luka are best friends and talked about teaming up when in the bubble
Better chance of them teaming up in Denver tbh. Nuggets have a much better team. Jokic already has had success there, much more than Luka (team/individual). I don’t see Luka leaving Dallas anytime soon but I definitely don’t see Nikola leaving Denver anytime soon.. I also highly doubt that they’re best friends
Why do you doubt their friendship?
I’m sure they’re friends. Probably even good friends but there’s no way they are each other’s best friend lol. They probably met like 5yrs ago. They both surely have lifelong friends from their respective cities/countries. How often would those 2 guys even see each other? Probably just a handful of times a year. Idk these guys obv but it just seems obv they would both have closer friends
There’s no feasible plan to get Dallas outta the web they have spun
There’s no cap for awhile
***IF they wanted to start that process…HUGE HUGE IF as it weakens 23 they could dangle Brunson to someone like the Knicks and instead of getting value back they could make them accept a guy like THTJr or Bertans as well for an expiring … unlikely tho as NYK would be paying full till on Brunson and then taking a bad contract too boot
Dallas is stuck , and it’s ugly, really really ugly, unless you think the team today has some sort of hidden cieling to come…I don’t
They are looking to have a top 5 tax bill ever next year if the sign Brunson to a 18-20 AAV and keep everyone else. I don’t envy them
KP doesn’t like contact. He’s very skilled for a center. But like AD doesn’t want to play center. The guy needs 25-30 LBs. So he can bang, that simple. Then the best thing would be to put an old school thick PF at the 4. To protect him. But because today everyone wants shooters (stretch 4s). He’s never going going to really fit in.
I want nothing to do with Holmgrem. He’s more skilled than KP. He’s also thinner and weaker. Guy needs 60 LBs. I would not waste a top 10 pick on him. He’s yrs away and that’s if he gains the weight. Cause if he doesn’t then he won’t last. KP has not been worth his contract. Holmgrem will be worse. It’s just bad business.
There goes AL again.
Zinger is not a center, never was and isn’t in Washington either… indeed Beal is counting on him in the lineup with center Gafford, per his recent presser.
Also Zinger’s knees do not need to support whatever additional weight nobody-AL thinks he should add.
Now AL is amti-Holmgren bc he should have that weight too at 19. Someday Holmgren probably will naturally have that weight, but it will be too late to draft him then. A drafting team has about 7 years control with the draftee if things work out okay.
