As expected, Ben Simmons faced plenty of invective from the Philadelphia faithful in his return to Wells Fargo Center, but it was the Nets who had the last laugh on Thursday night, blowing out the Sixers by a score of 129-100 in their first matchup since February’s blockbuster Simmons/James Harden trade.
Simmons, who has yet to make his Nets debut, was on the bench for the game and had no tangible impact on the outcome, but his teammates said they used the boos and insults aimed in his direction as motivation, writes Brian Lewis of The New York Post.
“Most definitely,” star forward Kevin Durant said. “We look at Ben as our brother, so we knew that this was a hostile environment and we knew he didn’t have an opportunity to play, so we wanted to come out there and have them focus on the court more so than just always focusing on him. So they focused on the court tonight, and it’s hard for you chant at Ben Simmons when you’re losing by that much.”
It’s a safe bet that Simmons will face more vitriol during future visits to Wells Fargo Center, especially once he’s actually on the court. But head coach Steve Nash said it was good for the three-time All-Star to get through his first experience as a visitor in Philadelphia.
“He looked good to me. He looked happy to be here,” Nash said, per Lewis. “I think he was happy to get it out of the way.”
Here are a few more Nets-related notes:
- Nash said on Thursday night that Simmons won’t be a full participant or play any 5-on-5 during Saturday’s practice (Twitter link via Alex Schiffer of The Athletic). There has been speculation that Simmons will return to action before the end of the month, but there’s still no set timeline for his Nets debut.
- Although Simmons was the focus on Thursday, another player who came along with him in last month’s trade played a key role in Brooklyn’s victory over Philadelphia. As Peter Botte of The New York Post details, Seth Curry‘s 24 points (on 10-of-14 shooting) against his former team were the most he had scored in a game since becoming a Net. “You could tell that he was really up for the game and up for the environment in returning to (face) his old team,” Nash said.
- The Nets’ home-heavy schedule in the season’s final month means that Kyrie Irving is now eligible to play in just four more regular season games due to his COVID-19 vaccination status, Adam Zagoria of NJ.com observes. Irving also wouldn’t be able to participate in a play-in game if it takes place in Toronto or Brooklyn. If the season ended today, the Nets would visit the Raptors to battle for the No. 7 seed — if they lost that play-in game, they’d host Charlotte or Atlanta for the No. 8 seed.
- While that outlook for Irving may sound ominous, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN said on Wednesday that the team still believes the point guard’s status will change in the not-too-distant future (hat tip to NetsDaily). “I think around the Nets there’s still a confidence – maybe even more than an optimism – that they’re going to get Kyrie Irving on a full-time basis at some point,” Wojnarowski said.
I’m glad the Sixers moved on from Simmons because his abilities didn’t mesh with Embiid. But I wish they kept Curry. The guy is one of the most underrated players in the league.
They meshed just as well as Harden/Embiid do. The series vs Atl last yr wasn’t the only basketball those 2 guys have played together. Remember they were 3rd best out of 30 teams (behind only Utah/Phoenix) last season, were #1 in the East & Joel would’ve been MVP if not for missing a bunch of games
Joel wasn’t the only one who got taken out of MVP talks due to injury…. He is however the biggest cry baby in the league in terms of actual tears. Not relevant to the conversation, just a fun little stat I like to unsheathe when Troel chatter gets to big for it’s own britches.
Even though they absolutely polished the Sixers, there still were some communication breakdowns that didn’t look forced by D.
The real scary part comes when these guys all have more time playing together and those unforced errors go away.
Funny, it turns out the “boos” last night weren’t Sixers fans after all — it was the ghost of Ben Simmons haunting their a$$
The ghost of Ben Simmons haunted the Sixers by…. being a cheerleader on the Nets’ bench?
Yeah, lol. How sad is that for Philly?
Simmons, Curry, Drummond are much better fit with KD and Kyrie than Harden. Than add Dragic! Nets are much much better and now we can see KD and Kyrie at their best instead of sharing the ball with ball hawker. Thank you Harden and Morey!!
all nets need ben to do is play defense. lock up the opposing teams best player and grab rebounds, pass and they will be deadly
He is 3 times all star, 2x all defense team for a reason, not to mention rookie of the yr and #1 draft pick. And he’s only 25! He will do all the dirty work for Kyrie and KD, and they can just preserve their energy and focus on scoring. Ben Simmons will average triple double as a Net.
@SplashBro You left out the part where, because of Ben’s tendencies on offense during high pressure situations, the Nets will be playing 4 on 5. I don’t care how great KD is, that’ll be tough for Brooklyn to overcome.
Not really. All he has to do is set screens and make passes.
Hater.
Kyrie Irving, Tim Hardaway, Tiny Archibald, Ja Morant or Mark Price? When they’re all done playing who will be the greatest pg of this group & why?… Rank a top 3 if possible…
Ja, Price, Hardaway, Kyrie, Nate
Ja is essentially D-Wade 2.0, without the injuries, and slightly taller. Dude is special
I dig Ja being #1 but I don’t see the DWade comp at all. Ja is much more like Russ or DRose, other extremely athletic/agile/productive pgs. Mark Price is one of my favorite bball players ever but how you rank him over 3 HOFers I can’t fathom
To be honest, I am just now realizing I misread the question. Its slightly different from others you usually post lol
I’ll go Ja, Hardaway, Kyrie
There are things Morant does that are so reminiscent of Wade; just that ‘how did he do that’, wow factor he kind of has. There is more, but that’s one of the things I saw with him. Probably not the defender Wade was though
That was an ugly beatdown to watch. Embiid and Harden combined 8/34 shooting
76ers are unlikely to beat Nets next season
The Harden trade is bad for 76ers future
Wait til they sign him to $270m contract.
It’s not that harden is a bad player by any means. He’s a top 20 player today. The problem with harden is his attitude, as soon as he’s not happy he shows it on the court. He just stands by the half court line, you could see it in the game yesterday he just posted around the 3pt line, didn’t try to cut, screen or do anything just waiting to catch the ball. The best version of Harden is when he plays the point and looks to get other people good looks. It wasn’t long ago Harden was a top 3 offensive player in the nba
And that’s exactly why signing him to a big contract is a bad idea. He’s already seemingly on the decline and no longer has the excuse of scenery, which was a concern in and of itself. Then there’s the question of the shape he’s in.
The bottom could fall out quickly on him. Maybe it takes a few years, but I would expect it.
Not much of a game for the Sixers if Harden and Maxey don’t show up. Bad shooting night all around for the Sixers.
Well see what happens if the Nets get get past the play-in and face the Sixers.
“we look at Ben as our brother”
that was an insulting performance by the Sixers yesterday. gotta play defense.
Embiid, Harden and Maxey all didn’t play their best games last night which hopefully wouldn’t be the case over the course of a series. That being said, my fear of making a Harden trade kind of bore out last night. The Sixers gave up pretty much all of their depth and it was ugly to watch.
At full strength,
Nets bench is 5 times better than 76ers.
Curry
Mills
Brown
James Johnson
Drummond
Claxton
Griffin
Aldridge
Edwards
Lmaoo Harden reminding everybody of his tendency to fold like a cheap tent under any sort of scrutiny. What an absolute dismantling by the short-handed Nets last night. James looked like he didn’t want to have anything to do with the raging bull that was his former teammates. Sure, Harden looks good when he wants to play or when he’s playing the Knicks or Minnesota Timberwolves, but this is the (real) James you get in any sort of pressure-packed environment. Sing me the McDonald’s tune because I’m loving it!!!
Harden got locked up by Kyrie. Harden always chokes in big gms. You really should chk out his playoff stats.

Thanks for the links to articles…If Philly resigns Harden to big contract, which is expected, buyer beware… NBA knows that Harden can be taken out of the game…. tables have now turned… if Nets play Philly in playoffs, Ben will be guarding Harden 1 on 1… Can take Harden out mentally, won’t score, not efficient as distributor, Maxey nonexistant in the game… Joel is the big problem to stop… need many centers with 6 fouls each…
Nets were Without ………
Ben, Aldridge, Griffin ….. and D up Sixers. I know it’s only one gm. But it does not bode well for Sixers in playoffs. Cause this yr the East is tough. You know all other contenders saw what Nets did. To me Harden is a player you can manage. JE is the the guy you have to prepare for. You need bodies for him. Drummond did a nice job. And KD with double team.
From start to finish. Talk about a statement ……
100% correct. They did give up some fouls early, but Brown being so active around the rim I think helped absorb some that would have gone to Drummond. Great team defense. Sixers look like toast. Nets wiped the floor with them.
While I don’t necessarily share it, there’s still a lot of optimism for BKN in many quarters, including among those with the most information. Even though they’re looking at a play-in game, they’re still the betting favorite to come out of the EC (although by far less a margin than they were before the trade). Hope it all comes to pass. This game a good sign, in addition to a needed win.
That was some enjoyable show to see BRK go to PHI & beat the living lights out of them, Ben 1 – PHI 0… what goes round comes round, just a great day for Ben!
Nets won the trade big time…got rid of Harden, who they were not going to resign, not happy in Brooklyn, got Simmons, who will fit in with Nets seamlessly, received knock down shooter in Seth Curry, while weakening Philly, got a needed big in Drummond, & 2 first round picks… awesome…. KD & KYRIE ARE BALLERS, CLUTCH CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYERS…. Harden not focused, out of shape starting each season, not clutch in long grind it out playoff series….Harden has become a nomad from team to team, like Westbrook… kudos to Sean Marks…..
