Cade Cunningham is putting up the kind of numbers the Pistons expected when they made him the No. 1 pick in last year’s draft, but it may not be enough to capture Rookie of the Year honors, writes Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press. Cunningham is the top scorer among rookies at 16.9 points per game and ranks second in his class in assists and fourth in rebounds. He has also been Detroit’s main option on offense for most of the season.
However, Cunningham was part of an unusually talented draft, and some of his competitors, such as Cleveland’s Evan Mobley and Toronto’s Scottie Barnes, have the advantage of playing for contending teams. Mobley, who is considered the favorite for the award, faced Cunningham Saturday night for the final time this season and both players posted double-doubles.
“I think this class is gonna go down when we look back 10, 15 years from now, as a top-three, top-four draft class of all time,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “You look at the group of guys, obviously you guys get to see Cade every night, we get to see Evan every night, but there’s so many guys that can play at such a high level. Their skill set, their size, and their ability to impact winning, which is the most important thing that we should value. Scottie Barnes rolling in Toronto. You see all these young guys, and they play the game more maturely than their age, as they should, and then they have immense talent to go with it.”
There’s more from Detroit:
- The Pistons may be in position to rise up the standings next year the same way the Cavs have done this season, suggests Keith Langlois of Pistons.com. Detroit is likely to add another high lottery pick to its young core and could have more cap room than anyone heading into free agency. “We’ve got to make smart decisions as an organization,” coach Dwane Casey said. “We’ve got to make the right decisions to add the right pieces that fit this group. (General manager Troy Weaver) has done a great job of putting this core together. Now we’ve got to add the right pieces.”
- The Pistons’ decision to keep Jerami Grant at the trade deadline looks like the right move, observes Rod Beard of The Detroit News. Grant delivered one of his best games of the season Saturday with 40 points in the loss at Cleveland. “I definitely was feeling it, but at the end of the day, we’ve got to get the win,” he said. “It really doesn’t mean anything unless we win.”
- Killian Hayes continues to excel in a reserve role and has developed some on-court chemistry with newly-acquired big man Marvin Bagley III, Beard adds in a separate story. “Killian is a great lob passer, so that’s you’re seeing some of his lobs to Marvin going to the rim,” Casey said. “Marvin gives us a different element that we didn’t have before — he’s a lob threat, and he has ability to protect the rim.”
I recall folks were surprised (including myself) that Toronto selected Barnes over Suggs, considering the loss of Lowry and decent depth at F. And here we are today discussing him as a possible ROY. Kudos to Toronto.
And Suggs is already looking like a bit of a bust, even though it’s a very small sample size and he could improve. Could also be that he plays for Orlando which is where talented draft picks go to die.
Killian Hayes continues to excel…..
Oh year how’s he going ….6 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds ohhhhh
Surely he’s shooting better now then …. 36% FG% and 26% 3P% ohhhhh
In his last 10 games, 5-5-3 shooting 34 and 23
Nope
Kid still sucks
And to think they drafted him 7th overall over Tyrese Haliburton 12th and Cole Anthony 15th.
Hayes is going to be a starter on that team. When will we learn not to pass judgement on 19 yr olds. Who has t played a full yr yet. He’s got great size for his position. And is a 2way player. His shot does need to get better. So I’d say wait a few yrs for it to come around. Not three gms. Any 19 yr old needs 3-4 yrs to show. Relax.
We have the pass judgement that’s the whole point! Lol. In the end they have to draft someone.
But yes as fans we should not pretend we can predict the future…only for fun. After all it’s just a game.
And none of us (despite some people wanting to be so, so, so, so, so badly) are professionals.
Sports production on the pro level. Is not predicated on the success of a 19 yr old. They are drafted on upside. Considering their bodies are not even mature yet. It’s absurd, dishonest, and fundamentally wrong. To pass judgement on that. Only fans who never played or don’t understand this gm. Will do that.
We all have players we like. Or see a big future in them. It’s not going to happen the first yr for a 19 yr old. You might want to look up the word judgement. Criticize yes but judgement should take yrs.
Sounds exactly like Frank Ntilikina.
Frank atleast plays better defence.
Reminds me of Kevin Knox aswell.
Kids just not cut out to be a starter, should go back to France and rip it up in the euro league
I’ve been very hard on Holmgrem . Cause of his weight and strength. So I was real high on that Memphis gm. Playing against real bigs.
Even though he got pushed around. And he was not strong enough to hold his own. To me definitely showed he needs weight and muscle.
Then showed me toughness. Never backed down. Did what he could to compete. Played big and smart. He’s a very skilled big. He showed me something this gm. I’ve said he is not worth a top 5 pick unless you know he will gain weight.
After this gm I believe he will do what he needs to do. He’s a gamer and got gm. He’s worth a top 5 pick. Cause now I believe he does want to be great. And he will do the things he needs to get better. And putting on 60 LBs will make this guy elite. He never once backed down in this gm. Even as he was being pushed around. He played smart and played to win.
Just remember the Memphis gm. Is like every gm in NBA. So I would not start him there. No need to rush him. For 82 gm season he has to put on weight and muscle. He’s changed my mind. If I’m Detroit I definitely look at him. Plus they have Stewart they can play next to him. If I draft him. I play him in G-league for first half. Maybe all yr.
Glad you are mature enough to keep your eyes open to these youngsters. Hopefully others will follow this lead & see that watching these guys play with an open mind & a love for the game is definitely the best way to watch… Another kid who’s similar to Chet but is even better is Victor Wenbanyama. He’s in France rn but he’s gonna be the #1 pick next yr & he’s gonna be better than Chet, Porzingis Giannis, KD, McAdoo or any of the other “unicorns”
Yeah well I’m not a hater. I just have strong opinions and believes about this game. Gotta give him credit. He showed up. Also like Duren was disappointed he got in foul trouble. He already has an NBA body. I would not mind Knicks taking him, still 18 yrs old. Big Upside
It’s probably not going to happen but what I’d personally like to see is:
1. Rockets-Jabari Smith
2. Magic- Chet Holmgren
3. Pistons- Paolo Banchero
4. OKC- Jaden Ivey
And with the 30th pick in the draft OKC get Ousmane Deing.
Then next year OKC surprises everyone and trades Shai and Favours to Charlotte for Hayward, PJ Washington and 2 firsts and 2 seconds.
They then tank and get Victor Wembanyama first overall, then early in the second round they get Emoni Bates.
By the 2023 season they then have Giddey Ivey Dort Bates Deing Poku Washington and Wembanyama as their young core. Plus a bunch of cap space to spend aswell.
Rockets take the best player and good fit with Jalen Green.
Pistons I like Cade and Paolo as a duo with help from Stewart and Bey.
Magic I like their history with centre’s (ONeale and Howard). I think Chet works well with Wendell Carter at the 4.
OKC takes the next best player in Ivey who fits well with Giddey so they cash in on Shai.
Shai is a great fit with LaMelo on that exciting team. OKC is happy to swallow Hayward’s deal and get the picks.
As of right now my ROY race goes as…
1/ Barnes
2/ Mobley
3/ Giddey
4/ Cunningham
5/ Wagner
