The Sixers explored potential trades involving Tobias Harris last month in case they had to clear cap room to sign James Harden in free agency, and those talks could result in a deal during the offseason, Brian Windhorst of ESPN says on his latest podcast.
“I’ve talked to league executives because I’m asking league executives a lot about Philly and everyone’s seen them for just a brief period of time,” Windhorst said. “But they’re already speculating what Tobias Harris trades they might look at this summer.”
Now that he has acquired Harden, there has been speculation that president of basketball operations Daryl Morey might pursue another star to pair with him and Joel Embiid. He’d likely have to unload a lot of salary to make that happen, and a logical starting point is Harris, who will make $37.6MM next season and $39.3MM in 2023/24.
The Sixers reportedly talked to the Hawks and Kings about possibly dealing for Harris, and there was speculation that the Thunder might be willing to take on his salary if enough assets are attached. Philadelphia may find even more options this summer when teams have more room below the cap or tax.
Harris has been one of the mainstays of Philadelphia’s offense since being acquired in a trade with the Clippers three years ago. However, his scoring average and shots per game have both declined slightly this season and he appears to be looking at a further reduced role now that Harden has arrived.
He is having a down year shooting the 3, but the rest of his numbers are on par with his career averages. Yes he is overpaid, but I hope we keep him around. He is a good/steady player
And fits in with the team!
Too inconsistent He scores 24 one night and 6 the next
Another ESPN journalist pointing out the obvious. I could talk to Silivan and get the same info.
Totally agree. This isn’t even news and it’s sure not coming from the sixers right now. I can speculate too
Seriously
Philly wants to trade Tobias Harris”
No…really?
He really makes a clunky fit on our roster. Decent player (over paid), good locker room high character guy….but he really does not fit our roster…I wouldn’t “attach assets” unless something nice is the return.
Right now he looks the same as he did in Brett Brown offense(stand still shooter) which isn’t his game. He is a triple threat(he can score at all 3 levels). Doc needs to work him into the offense better
You really don’t know basketball at all if you think that.
13Morgs is right. Tobias is being misused, and the reason why is because Maxey has too large a role in the offense.
He could easily average 25 a game if he were more selfish and aggressive. Harden has now taken over Tobias’s role as the secondary facilitator (a role many of you casual fans never even noticed), which means Tobias needs to be aggressive and stop passing up shots or drives. With Harden on the team being in his ear, Tobias should start to play more aggressive and be more of the player he was last year when Ben went down.
The fact is, Tobias is unstoppable when he wants to be. He is an excellent shooter, has a tremendous feel for the game, and he is a complete mismatch at the four. The Sixers need him to be the third piece in their Big Three if they want to have any chance of reaching their potential and winning a championship.
Lol love when comments on here start with “you really dont know basketball.”
Love it even MORE when its Philly fans fighting amongst themselves.
Made my day, thank you.
Nobody cares dude.
I call it like I see it. Somebody speaking out their behind makes it clear that person doesn’t know basketball.
It sounds like, if what you’re saying is true, that Doc needs to light a fire under his tail, rejuvenate him, and ultimately empower him as the leader of their second unit off the bench.
He might not like it at first, but have him come in with the second unit, have him initiate the offense, get his game and shot going, and THEN have him close out games with the starting group..
This may embolden Harris, and get him in that aggressive, attacking mindset once again. Then, when he rejoins the starters to close games out, maybe he’ll remain more aggressive and more active..
Harris could be used more in pick n roll situations, to get him going. Whether it is with Maxey, Embiid, and/or Harden, either as the screener or the ball handler, this could also be an effective way to get Harris more involved in the game while on the same floor as the rest of the 76ers starters..
Idk, both are just a thought experiment, I’m not even a 76ers fan, so I’m sure you fans would know alot better than myself..What are you guy’s thoughts??
I won’t bother to reply with YDKSABB…you did that well enough with out my input.
Tobias dribbles to much, clogs the lane, is slow to make decisions. What our roster needs is a guy who is willing to shoot more than 3.4 3’s a game…it would be nice to see him not be so reluctant…especially since our spacing leaves him wide open…you know revert to 2018 shooting 6 a game…
If you can’t tell he is a clunky fit…and Maxey is the 3rd piece. Tobias the 4th, and I like him…I just think he is a poor fit. But kudos to you for watching him play and calling him unstoppable lol.
This is such a dumb article.
Sixers talked about moving Harris to get cap space for Harden and now they have Harden they MIGHT move Harris to get cap space again??
I think in reality it’ll all depend on how this season and the playoffs play out. If Harris can adjust to being the 3rd/4th option with Harden and Embiid and we make a really good run out of the playoffs then there really isn’t a need for a trade. If he doesn’t adjust well then sure may aswell have a look around the market and see what teams are willing to offer.
Just to throw an idea out there, I wouldn’t mind doing Tobias Harris plus draft capital for Marcus Morris and Norman Powell.
Clippers don’t have much in terms of picks. Harris could be an ideal third for them playing off Kawhi and PG. For us Marcus Morris comes back to Philly, he adds some physicality and aggression. Morris has also really improved as a three point and free throw shooter. I also think if we can add him there’s a good chance his twin brother Markieff could follow in FA and he would also be a good addition. Powell is included for salary matching but he probably swings the deal to much in our favour. He wouldn’t be my main target anyways it would be Marcus. Maybe that can make something happen here idk.
Just to run with this idea some more. Tobias returns back to where he played his best basketball. Could bring his mate Boban in FA as a back up centre who would also want to come and link up with Zubac.
Norman Powell sucks, and he’s a ballhog.
Tobias is the second most important player after Embiid and has been ever since he came here. The only problem with him has always been his lack of aggressiveness as a Sixer. He’s a mismatch every single night though and an excellent and unselfish facilitator.
There are way better Tobias trades to be made if that was ever the move, and Tobias is a guy where you’d have to replace everything he does with whoever replaces him. Anybody thinking otherwise flat out doesn’t know basketball.
Tobias second over Harden?
And as I said don’t really want Powell the deals not about him it’s about Marcus Morris who gives you every Tobias does and has the aggression that he lacks. You really need to work on your reading bro…
He actually doesn’t. I’ve watched Marcus his whole career, and he absolutely doesn’t do what Tobias does. He’s a true four, which doesn’t work when you have a dominant Center like JoJo. There’s a reason the Sixers have only worked as a team when Tobias and JoJo or Tobias and Ersan started together. Marcus is too much of an inside scorer who bangs on the boards.
You said Powell being included would swing the deal too much in the Sixers’ favor, and that’s nonsense. Tobias is a better player than him and far less of a ballhog. Powell has put up empty stats his whole career and almost tanked the Raptors in 2019 but hit just enough of his shots for them to win that championship.
And yes, second over Harden. Harden is having to carry the team right now offensively because Tobias isn’t being the second scorer he’s supposed to be. Harden isn’t a mismatch like he is. Tobias can score down low on basically anyone when he’s in the right mindset.
I can’t take you seriously when you say Harris over harden that just complete non sense. Harris is no longer the second scorer, he’s probably not even the third now.
As your your Harris praise you say he can score down low on anyone yet you say Morris isn’t like Harris cause he is an inside scorer? Yet when you compare the two Morris actually has a better career 3 point percentage.
You also say all Morris does is bang the boards, yet Harris also averages more career rebounds?
Almost everything you’ve said is completely wrong.
Lastly Morris last season shot 47% from 3 and this season is almost shooting 40% on 5 attempts per game. Harris is currently averaging 35% from deep on 3 attempts per game.
Thus making Morris the far more better three point shooter
I think this is Tobias’ mothers burner account
It has to be, I’ve never seen someone so absurdly blind to a players skills ajd shortcomings as this guy is with Tobias Harris…
It is actually pretty comical..
Now, I’m not saying Harris isn’t a solid basketball player, but he’s in NO WAY their second best offensive option…lol
He’s maybe third on a good night for him, but he is quickly getting outplayed and less opportunities than Maxey now, which leaves him as their #4…
That could change, but he almost seems content now taking a beat seat offensively to Embiid, Harden, AND even Maxey. He’s the exact opposite of Maxey, and lacks aggression on the offensive end. Doc has even admitting he’s had a talk with Tobias about being more aggressive offensively.
Harris will come out the gates attacking with the ball, but those nights are becoming fewer and further between. He’s also shooting his lowest eFG% he has in 7 years, and he’s just been very inconsistent from game to game with how he attacks on the offensive end.
For what it’s worth he is averaging a career high in assists, but he will take twenty shots one game, then take less than ten the next two, and then decides to take fifteen the next game..
Someone you’re paying THAT much money to, he has to have more of an overall, consistent impact on his team’s ability to win night in and night out..
As far as trading Harris in the offseason goes, they could work out a three team deal with Harris and a future first going to OKC, and Philly getting back either another rotation player in a 3 team swap, or just simply letting Harris go to target a particular free agent or two Philly wants to strengthen their depth ajd overall takent level..
For what Harris is giving them especially now, they’ll be able to replace his production easily much cheaper, AND they’ll be able to strengthen their depth by using some of that leftover money…Sounds like a real win for the 76ers to me; however, if Harris gets his rear-end in gear, and becomes more consistently aggressive then they very well could be better off just keeping him around..
I guess we shall see how this plays out..
Not moving him without attaching a pick. Or taking back another unwanted player.
Knicks and Lakers are always interested
Knicks I doubt but Tobias at the four in LA rather than Melo probably would’ve made the Lakers the best or second best team in the West.
It amazes me the way people hate on a guy who averages 19 a game while being unselfish to a fault. The Sixers are lucky as hell to have him, and his contract reflects the demand his ’18-19 season created for his services at only 26 years old. His numbers since then reflect his unselfish to a fault nature, not any lack of ability.
His contract reflects a team that was desperate to keep him after trading away assets to get him in the first place…
It also reflects the flaws behind the NBA max contracts, where good but not great players are holding their team for ransom, and getting contracts they don’t really deserve. Harris should not be making nowhere near the same as KD, Dame, Embiid, George, AD, Giannis, etc. nor what LeBron and Kawhi are making. They just aren’t even on the same planet talent wise…
There should be more strict qualifiers to receive a max contract, or there should be tiered max contracts based off performance, stats, usage, making all-NBA teams, etc.
Yes overpaid. Yes shooting sucks this year. Still one of the better PFs, Top-10. Won’t be able to find anyone of his caliber to play the 4 if they deal him in a Beal trade.
Does it make sense to push Maxey to the bench for Beal? Or trade Green, Furkan, Shake, Thybulle, Joe, Reed… and upgrade the wing. That’s where I’d focus. They just have to bite the bullet on the tax.
They’d have to first guarantee Green, but 23.24 M of contracts I’d trade without a second thought.
Who wants to take on Green’s contract?
I disagree that he’s overpaid but his shooting has definitely been poor this year. At least you acknowledge that he’s one of the best fours in the game and wouldn’t be easily replaced though.
It’s hard to see a Tobias trade where the Sixers get fair value back.
The three is where they need to upgrade. They need a Reggie Bullock/KCP type who shoots well from three and scores unselfishly while also playing lockdown defense. Imo we already potentially have that guy in Isaiah Joe but I doubt they ever give him that chance. Those guys are really few and far between these days. Most of the “three and D” type guys these days are tweeners.
Yeah nah I’d rather forget about Beal and if we did trade Harris don’t go after another star but go after a couple role players or another young player or two.
So far Maxey Harden and Embiid have been terrific as a 3 piece. Thybulle has played really well these last three games too. Shot over 50% from the field in all three and doubled his points per game.
Tobias in fairness did well today, 5/10 from the field, 2/3 from deep. He’s still making the adjustment but he was great today.
My 1 reservation is dont out all your chips in win now. You only have up 2 firsts for Harden. You have young Maxey and Thybulle. I like Isiah Joe (22), Paul Reed (22) and Springer (19) is getting developed in the G League. Don’t throw away more picks or some of the decent young guys to chase an unnecessary third star. To many egos aren’t a good mix.
Here is Tobi bag. This is Boban bag. Who gives a rats ass. He can fit in at the right times.
Awful player, plays like he’s afraid to offend the other team lol. Also getting paid like Lebron James. Big LOL
That’s a good way to describe it. He’s too nice a guy. If he was aggressive at all times he could average 25
In my mind, Harris is basically a better version of what Nic Batum was in Charlotte: a very good player but definitely not a max player. Offering the max to anyone other than a legitimate star/superstar usually doesn’t end well, but some team out there could get a solid player and an asset or two just for taking on his contract.
Lol. Harris is a way better version of Batum. That’s a terrible comparison
In what way?? Tobi is a horrible defender, and worse 3 point shooter.
Lol. Go look at the career numbers. It’s not even close
You must have missed the part where I said Harris is a better version. I’d definitely rather have Harris, but neither one of them was ever a max player.
They will fit him in. Even tonight you see Harden and Embiid pass out of open shots because Harden doesn’t want to look like the ball hog and embiid wants his guy to fit in. Tobias had a few open shots tonight too that he decided to dribble and bail on. They will get it together.
“Doesn’t want to look like a ball hog.”
Yes, James Harden, an NBA superstar who forced two trades and burned bridges in the Process is now worried he might look like a “ball hog.”
Lol. Only on HR. Like it love it.
Perfect retort…Well done good sir..lol
Harris at his price tag is best on a lottery team. Once he’s free of that contract he can go to a contender and maybe win
His contract is a huge albatross..
He’s a mediocre player getting way over paid.
Sixers brass and fans can put as much lipstick on this pig, but it’s still a pig..
Just when you think Simmons is gone and Harden joins and Sixers fans have nothing to complain about…
Can’t wait to watch this team implode this postseason. Though I would like to see Harden get a ring; hopefully he jumps ship at least once more to somewhere interesting.
Capela has fallen out of favor in ATL. Harden loves a rim runner for lobs and Capela at the 4 could create defensive mismatches at his height and would help the rebounding too, which they badly need.
Or you stagger him to play Center while Embiid rests. Start him when Embiid needs a night off. Not sure how the money works out but Harris for Capela helps both teams.
