Auburn sophomore Walker Kessler will declare for the NBA Draft and forgo his remaining college eligibility by hiring an agent, he told ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.
Kessler is ranked No. 24 on ESPN’s big board. As Givony notes, he received Naismith and NABC National Defensive Player of the Year honors this season, averaging 11.4 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game.
“This season was a blast for my teammates and I,” Kessler said. “Winning the SEC regular season and being the No. 1 ranked team in the country for the first time in Auburn history was a dream. I really valued all the time I spent with the coaching staff and everyone around the program. It was so much fun.”
Kessler, a 7’1″ center, has impressed scouts with his length and athleticism. He posted the highest shot-blocking percentage in college basketball over the last 15 years, according to Givony.
“I think NBA teams saw the different ways I can impact the game,” Kessler said. “I have good timing as a shot-blocker and can move my feet well switching on ball screens. I’m looking forward to showing the diversity of my game, as well as my mobility.”
The NBA draft will be held on Thursday, June 23 in Brooklyn, New York.
Reminiscent of (yet) another A-Town big (that didn’t go to Tech), Kelvin Cato
Probably a bench warmer
There’s plenty of guys like him in the league that didn’t pan out!! Bol Bol is one of them!!! And he was better!! Whoever is giving this kid advice is ruining his career!!! First he should have never left North Carolina and now jumping into the draft!!! He’ll be lucky if he gets into the 2nd round where contracts aren’t guaranteed!!!
I think he’s got potential. Can play outside and understands his gm. He can be a productive big. Be best to put him next to a big time 4. He’s a late 1st rd pick
Worth a second round flyer if you have multiple picks
Spurs or Jazz player, for sure.
Could be the next Meyers Leonard
If his length is measured consistent with NBA rim protecting, then I think he’ll go higher than #24. If not, 2nd round. All or nothing with him; I don’t see a second special skill (but shot blocking is extra special).
Yeah he can block shots at the college level, but he won’t average half that at the next level where everyone is ultra athletic!! He’s going to be a a poster board if he even plays in the league!!!(think he’ll be in the g league)
This kid is making a mistake going into the draft!!! He got exposed in the tournament!!! He can’t shoot, awkward and too soft for the NBA game!!! His best bet is too stay in school and develop because he’ll be shipped straight to the G league where he’ll stay forever!!! He should’ve stayed at Carolina!!!smh..
