Collin Sexton is looking forward to training camp in September, whether it’s with the Cavaliers or somebody else, writes Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. A meniscus tear knocked Sexton out of action 11 games into the season, and there’s still no timeline for him to resume basketball activities. A source told Fedor that Sexton will undergo several tests next week to determine his progress.
“I’m getting there,” he said after today’s exit meeting with coach J.B. Bickerstaff. “Every day is a grind. I feel better every day. As long as I get better 1% each and every day I wake up, then it’s a win-win. I just continue to know that some days are going to be better than others and just continue to know I will be full go and I know I’m going to be 100%. I have confidence in myself and I have confidence in the people that’s working with me to get me back to where I was — and even much better.”
Sexton’s contract status made his future in Cleveland uncertain before the injury occurred. He’s headed for free agency this summer and will be restricted if the Cavs make a $7.23MM qualifying offer. The team acquired Caris LeVert at the trade deadline, which means Sexton might be in a sixth-man role if he returns.
“I want to be here in Cleveland,” he said. “I love the organization, love my teammates and whatever happens I know that Cleveland was really good to me. I know this is the place that helped me get to where I am today, and I know I want to continue to be a part of this winning culture. I feel like me just being able to be at the start of it helped us get to yesterday and where we are right now at the present. I love Cleveland. I want to be here.”
There’s more from Cleveland:
- The Cavaliers had their season derailed by injuries and weren’t able to advance beyond the play-in tournament, but the mood was optimistic after Friday’s game, according to Kelsey Russo of The Athletic. Cleveland was among the most improved teams in the league, and there’s a feeling that the foundation is in place to be a long-term contender. “We’re still like, ‘Damn, it’s really over,’” Jarrett Allen said. “And then two seconds later, and it’s like, we’re laughing because we had a hell of a year. A lot has happened this year — positive, negative — but we look at all the times that we did play well, and we came together. And that was all positive.”
- Darius Garland has made a strong case to receive a rookie-scale extension that could be worth up to a projected $181MM over five years, per Bobby Marks of ESPN. Garland became an All-Star in his third NBA season and took on a larger role as the team dealt with injuries, averaging 25.2 points and a league-high 10.8 assists per game after March 1.
- Kevin Love‘s bounce-back season may cause the front office to consider an extension, Marks adds. Love has an expiring $28.9MM contract for next season, but there would be no restrictions on how much his salary could decrease in the first year of a new deal.
I’ve always thought that sexton would thrive in a 6th man role. He would still get a ton of minutes and provide a huge scoring threat off the bench
If they S&T max offer Sexton for Rudy Gobert they can just play all Centers and Garland.
Gobert, Allen, Mobley, Markkanen, and Garland.
Juggernaut defense
Why would Jazz make that trade?
They certainly don’t need Sexton but Cleveland would be fun to watch.
Hilarity
They don’t defend the 3-point shot. What’s the difference. They get a lead then piss it away by backing off the 3-point line.
Hard to say what’ll happen with sexton. Think some team will offer a lot of money and I doubt the Cavs decide to match anything over 20mil a season. Cavs had the chance to resign him and they couldn’t come to terms and apparently Garland was really reasonable in contract talks.
Although keeping him and having him in that sixth man role with KLove of the bench sounds good I’m not sure it’ll ever happen.
Hoping he can bounce back to full health and find a situation that’ll have him as a starter.
There is not a lot of teams with money.
As much as I rag on the Cavs (in friendly fan spirit). They were set up to do well barring massive injuries.
With that being said the notion of Mobley being over Cade for ROTY because of team success is completely non sensical. Cavs are a lottery team again period. And Evan Mobley did NOTHING to change that! Yes he got hurt for a few late games but they were sliding when Allen fell. Which what most Pistons fans were saying all along. Cavs team success was on Allen and Garland.
Mobley is great will be greater amd we will have some nice divisional battles to look forward to with the Cavs. But all this talk on ROTY being based off team success this year is a garbage stance.
Disagree. Cade did next to nothing in the first half of the season. Ofcourse his stats were going to be better because his team sucks and someone needs to score the points.
Mobley as a rookie was great defensively, like top 20 defensively. He played a big role in helping this Cavs team into the play-in tournament and had Allen and Garland not missed so many games they would’ve made the playoffs.
Scottie would be my pick tho, again great defensively, great passing the ball, really good scoring ability aswell. Played a key role for the Raptors who finished 5th in the east. He did it all as a rookie, looked great and won the most games.
“Next to nothing first half of the season”???????? Dude are you high on meth? Or just talking about something you clearly know nothing about?
Cade had a stat line in a game the first half of the aeason that had only been done by one other rookie in NBA history. Jordan. No offense juat joking obviously saying you were high. But saying Cade did next to nothing the first half of the season is utterly ridiculous!
He averaged like 13/14 points per game as the second scoring option and primary ball handler on a team which sucks.
Whereas Mobley and Barnes have been consistently putting up good numbers on a winning side while being the 3rd/4th scoring options. Both Mobley and Barnes are better defenders and Barnes is a better playmaker
Even if you take away teams success which I’m not sure you should. Cunningham, Barnes and Mobley we’re all very good and its awfully close.
The fact that Mobley had a better BPM, PER, VORP and WS then Barnes or Cunningham combined with his team’s success id have give to the edge to Mobley.
Mobley could possibly make an all Defensive team as well.
Your take makes more sense. Butyour advanced metrics take can be countered by the fact Cade was the leader of the Pistons his 2nd week playing. And teams routinely game planned to stop him first and foremost.
As opposed to who else. I don’t know if that is true anyway, or if it matters, or if there were things about Cade to take advantage of— not fear. Since Cade is by far the worst-shooting Piston starter, with a TS% of.504, 42% on 2s and 31% on 3s, I suppose teams better plan for his driving. With 3.7 TOV vs 5.6 assists, maybe teams wanted to scheme how to get the ball back.
But it is something of mostly local interest. Winning does matter, it should not even have to be said, especially if there was a turnaround to explain.
And Cade was setting rookie marks the first half? What mark was that?
I was defending the guy on this site against critics.
This ROY campaigning is not a good omen. He must feel off the map.
Cade and Jalen Green both started slow at the season start. As they adjusted, they both started scoring massive points. What Green did at the final 5 games of the season and the last game, was phenomenal.
ROY honors will definitely be a hard decision. You can’t ignore what these young kids did this year. 4-5 guys deserve the ROY honors.
In the long term though, say hit me up in seven years I believe Cade will be the best in this draft class career wise.
How is it that Mobley did nothing to change that? He’s a top 10 defender in the NBA already. I’m not even sure if Cade is a net positive on the court yet.
Sexton won’t be in the “sixth-man role”!! Caris played awful with us, if anything he will be in the “sixth-man role”. Caris is streaky will Collin is a certified bucket!
While*
I like CLV, but you right it seems really odd that anyone would think to have him as a starter & Sexton as a sixth man, very strange!
I can’t ever see Sexton as a sixth man, unless he never fully recovers from the injury or his game declines massively, he is not only a starter but a rising star in the league!
Might just be me but it reminds me of the Terry Rozier situation in Boston.
Not only the play style, point guard turned shooting guard who is a great scoring threat with big potential as a defender aswell. But how Celtics could’ve kept him but he ended up leaving and has been a pretty good starter ever since the move.
Definitely don’t see Sexton as a sixth man at this stage of his career. Terry was labeled a sixth man before his move away and has been really solid since. Sexton is getting the sixth man label and I think like Rozier will leave and prove a lot of people wrong becoming a really solid starting SG.
While this is true, Sexton doesn’t guard well and Rozier was always a naturally instinctive defender.
I hate that guys get this bench vs starter label. It’s just dumb. If you play 30 anyway amd make the same amount of money then why does matter. It’s selfish and not team oriented.
Ask Jalen Green, he’ll tell you that he is a bucket.
Love, Sexton, two future #1 picks

The Chosen One …….
Cavs will get plenty of free pub for Bron breaking the scoring record. And can contend for 2-3 rings with him
