The Bulls’ already-depleted backcourt could be missing a key guard in Game 5 of their first-round series against Milwaukee. Alex Caruso is in concussion protocol and his status for Wednesday’s game is uncertain, Rob Schaefer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
“It’s probably going to be a day-to-day thing with him,” coach Billy Donovan said. “He’s obviously going to have to go through a series of tests before he’s cleared. I don’t know how long that would take and how long it would take for his symptoms to go away… We’ll find out more on Tuesday.”
Caruso sustained an inadvertent shot to the face from Bucks guard Jevon Carter during the second quarter of Game 4 as Milwaukee took a 3-1 lead in the series. Ayo Dosunmu and Coby White would absorb Caruso’s minutes if he can’t go.
We have more from the Central Division:
- What will the Pistons do if they land the No. 1 pick for the second consecutive year? James Edwards III of The Athletic predicts they would draft Gonzaga big man Chet Holmgren. Edwards lists Jabari Smith of Auburn and Paolo Banchero of Duke next on the team’s wish list. However, he doesn’t see Detroit drafting Purdue guard Jaden Ivey — No. 4 on ESPN’s Best Available list — higher than No. 7.
- One of the consolations for the Cavaliers in their play-in tournament flameout is that it allowed them to retain their first-round pick. The next step is decide whether to use that pick or deal it away for an experienced rotation player, Chris Fedor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes. President of basketball operations Koby Altman is willing to bring in a rookie. “There’s nothing wrong with having another young player that you can develop,” he said. “I don’t want to say, ‘Let’s trade it again and get somebody else.’ I think there’s a nice niche here for a young prospect to really grow without a ton of expectation and grow into potentially a rotational player who can help down the road.”
- In the same story, Fedor reports that at least one source believes a Cavaliers–Ricky Rubio reunion is “highly likely.” Rubio, on the mend from a torn ACL in his left knee, will be a free agent this summer. His expiring contract was traded to Indiana in February.
Rubio was playing so well for them. It was a drag when he got hurt. His game plays way better as a third guard.
As a Piston fan Picking Holmgren concerns me due to how he is not built for the physicality of the NBA game. He’s just too thin and at this point of the rebuild the last thing we need is a Darko 2.0. I’ll trust Weaver to make the right choice and hopefully that would be Jabari Smith
I mean this with all due respect, but comparing Chet to Darko means you don’t know much about either player. Chet is skinny but moves very well around the court, very high IQ, is a great passer, shooter, excellent shot blocker and rebounder. Darko was big, but slow, low IQ, couldn’t shoot or hit FTs (was okay rebounder and shot blocker though).
And players bulk up, Giannis was 6’10 190 at the draft. Anthony Davis came into the league with scouts saying he was too skinny too. But here are per 40 min college comparison…
AD- 17.7ppg, 13reb,1.6ast, 5.8blks, 62-15-71%shooting
Chet- 21ppg, 14.7reb, 2.8ast, 5.4blks 60-39-71%shooting
Chet 2 inches taller and can already shoot. He has potential to be just as good and better than AD. He would be great for any teams rebuild
AD…national collegiate championship
Chet…weeeeeell
I think a better comparison would be KAT, mainly due to the three point shooting and lack of physicality.
Chet in 27 minutes was 14.1-9.9-1.9-3.7 shooting 61-39-72
KAT only averaged 21 minutes per game but was 10.3-6.7-1.1-2.3 shooting 57-25-81
Much closer with Chet being a better rebounder, better passer, better shot blocker and having shot better. Chet is thinner than KAT and I think will need to beef up a little but nothing crazy. Chet will be a top 10 centre easy, probably top 5
Pistons ideal offseason would be draft Chet, resign Bagley and also get Colin Sexton.
1. Cade
2. Sexton
3. Bey
4. Bagley
5. Chet
Sexton and Cade can both share the ball and both are versatile enough at either guard spot. Bagleys athleticism and physically at the 4, makes up for Chets lack of it.
Team would space the floor really well, run the break really well and be good in the pick/roll pick/pop half court sets.
Off the bench, Hayes can have a chance to run the second unit although I think he’s done. Okynyk and Stewart at the 4 and 5 off the bench are much alike to Chet and Bagley. One more athletic and the other more of a perimeter player.
All of which plans don’t involve Jerami Grant who I think they should trade for Josh Hart and a future first. Hart is a solid bench player, can do it all for you and is a great teammate.
How in the world could Chet guard any big in the NBA? What center is going to have any trouble dominating the paint with that over rated toothpick manning up? The pistons could not go wrong with any of the other four top rated players, but Holmgren will never be a starter on a good team. Drew Timme will do better than Holmgren and Timme sucks!
Jalen Suggs couldn’t make the leap from Gonzaga to the NBA. That leap is even bigger for a big man. Holmgren is not a big man. He is a tall person.
He is less than Darko 2.0 because Darko at least looked like a professional athlete.
Lol you’re pretty sure of yourself. Got any actual evidence to back your argument that he won’t succeed in NBA other than his weight? Because your argument that Jalen Suggs didn’t have a good rookie year and that he doesn’t look as big as Darko aren’t very convincing.
@Missing
In this day and age we aren’t talking about 23 yo rookie centers. It’s quite possible for him to add 20 pounds and some muscle. Giannis was pretty thin when he was drafted too. But I would agree that there’s a bit more risk and almost certainty, more patience that might be required relative to the other top picks.
I do agree Chet will find it hard defending in the paint being so thin compared to the centre’s into days game which will be able to dominate him down low. At the same time those big slow guys won’t be able to guard him on the perimeter. He moves and shoots like a guard. 3’s are worth more than 2’s. Not to mention Chet may be weak but he collects blocks very well so he may get pushed around but over time he will hold his own and be a real force.
The Darko talk is just you comparing tall players with foreign names and the Pistons link. They aren’t alike at all. It would be like comparing Lonzo to Magic cause both are tall pints that ended up at the Lakers. How’d that comparison work out…
Just let the kid prove himself before you try write him off
Lol cavs are not trading sexton brah
I was going to support Holmgren too but look at this, three Cavs fans advising on the Pistons! Suspicious…
Cavs owner is a Detroit native and resident
When the Bulls starting 5 plus Caruso played, they were undefeated, 7-0, with an average margin of victory more than 17.5. But they couldn’t stay healthy.
