There appears to be a growing expectation that the Kings won’t name Alvin Gentry as their full-time head coach, Marc Stein reports at Substack. Gentry was named interim head coach when the franchise fired Luke Walton back in November.
Sacramento is believed to be seeking a veteran coach, according to Stein, who says that Terry Stotts, Mike D’Antoni, Mike Brown and Steve Clifford have been mentioned in league coaching circles as potential targets. Stotts and D’Antoni are coaching free agents, while Brown (Warriors assistant) and Clifford (Nets coaching consultant) currently work for teams.
The Kings will miss the playoffs for the 16th straight time this season, the longest streak in NBA history. The team has seen seven head coaches in the last decade: Keith Smart, Michael Malone, Tyrone Corbin, George Karl, Dave Joerger, Walton and Gentry.
Stotts, D’Antoni, Brown and Clifford all hold experience as former head coaches. Stein notes that D’Antoni has a strong relationship with Kings general manager Monte McNair, as both were together in Houston from 2016-20. Stotts is also expected to receive interest on the coaching market this summer.
Please please please give Terry the reigns. D’Antoni needs to stay away
Yes
Stotts
Mike DanToni can only coach the best team
Kings are not the best team
This franchise seems to have no clue how to run a organization they remind me on the LA Angles who buy and buy all the top hitters but think they can win with garbage pictures just like the kings can’t win with garbage coaches and GM’s
Angles management is obtuse, refusing to fix their acute issues!
They HAD a solid coach in Joerger, but inexplicably replaced him with the mediocrity of Luke Walton
and Malone and Karl, but because a couple of players that thought their S*** didn’t stink, so the Club catered to them, but I won’t mention D. Cousins Name !! Karl never had a chance, yet he is in the Top 20 of NBA Coaches in Wins !!
Karl was the best coach they landed since the Adleman era and they messed that up. Your right, they catered to punks instead of a HOF coach. They have their reward. Boogie too.
Not sure any of those higher profile coaches will want to come run this disaster. Guy like Brown doesnt want his last chance as a head coach in those circumstances. Coaches get blamed for win loss % even when the roster is trash and it will hurt the chances of future jobs to run that pile.
Not surprising that mostly white guy, retreads are mentioned as candidates. Bobby Jackson should be the clear frontrunner for this job
Not surprising you name a black man as should-be frontrunner. Probably a good choice tho, Jackson.
Most HCs last cycle were newbie blacks… all 5 new HCs not named Jason Kidd or Rick Carlisle. So far, the only impact HCs are Kidd and Udoka. For most of the other teams, expectations were low to begin with. I still think Willie Green & Pels will stick.
You know, that #1 that is probably Not the whole list that they are considering. #2 The Coach any of us states we don’t want will be the one they select, lol !!
Unpopular opinion but I’d rather Dantoni at the Sixers than Doc
Kenny Atkinson deserves another shot somewhere just sayin’.
I think the priority in SAC must be to get Doug Christie in as the HC… if that ain’t gonna happen, of this list I would take MDA, clearly or even Clifford… I would not want any part of Stotts or Brown, that is for sure!
So much for analytics Guru McNair being the franchise’s savior. Don’t know if it’s on him or the owner, but I do know that so long as Vivek remains owner the team will continue to be a laughingstock.
Give Terry a chance!
It should be Kenny Atkinson – he has shown with the NETS that he’s adept with building from the ground up.
These KINGS have long been in the mud, nowhere to go but up.
