Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle appears committed to his role for the future, Marc Stein writes at Substack. As we recently relayed, Carlisle denied that he’s interested in switching to a front office role, addressing the rumors in a brief statement.
“I just want to be completely clear on this. I don’t know what the assumptions are that people are making about this, why this would be the case,” Carlisle said, according to Stein. “When I came here, we had hoped to have a really good season this year. We had some struggles early, and it morphed into a change in direction, but that’s OK. It has not quelled my enthusiasm for being back with the Indiana Pacers or taking on this challenge one single bit.”
The Pacers are viewed as a team that may pursue Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson in free agency this summer, Stein reports. Brunson played under Carlisle for three years in Dallas. Signing the 25-year-old could motivate Carlisle further, though Detroit and New York are also expected to bid for his services.
There’s more out of Indiana today:
- The Pacers have left several rival teams with the impression that they’ll attempt to trade Malcolm Brogdon this offseason, Stein relays. Trading Brogdon would open a spot for Brunson, who could pair with Tyrese Haliburton in the backcourt.
- If the team doesn’t sign Brunson, it could also examine a possible Russell Westbrook trade with the Lakers, Stein notes. A deal for Westbrook would likely include Buddy Hield, whom the Lakers coveted before trading for Westbrook last offseason. It could also include Brogdon and draft compensation from the Lakers. Indiana acquired Hield in a deal with Sacramento earlier this season.
- One player the Pacers do want to keep is Myles Turner, according to Stein. Turner saw his name surface in trade rumors this season. He averaged 12.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in 29.4 minutes per game, shooting 51% from the floor. He’s under contract for next season at $18MM.
Westbrook, AReaves & LAL’s 2027 1st (top10 protected) to Indy for Brogdon & Buddy could be a really good deal for both teams
You can’t have AR15, he’s Caruso 2.0
Lift the protections and throw a swap on 28 for Indy as well unprotected and maybe it gets interest
Agree w Bill No AR tho!!!
Still think RW greatest chance by far to move is NYK
Then Cha Hou tier …then maybe Indy tier of doubtful but possible
Helps Lal to have a couple suitors in the game tho ultimately the best idea might be just to eat RW 23′ and be a power player in free agency that summer.
That’s not only insane for the Pacers, it’s just NOT the Pacers’s job to save the Lakers, and Laker fan should figure that out. Russell has NO value and you have no draft picks. Austin Reeves is not good, and a draft pick 50 years from now is not worth anything
Gheez Lakers rumours heating up more and more everyday
Lakers: Gordan Hayward and Buddy Heild
Hornets: Russell Westbrook, the 2027 first and a second rounder from Indy
Indiana: THT and PJ Washington
The deal doesn’t make much sense for the Hornets but apparently it’s something they are discussing. For Indy it makes sense getting back young players to rebuild with. And for the Lakers it’s a great deal.
Move LeBron back to point guard and sign his mate Tristan Thompson in FA for the vets min.
1. Bron. Nunn. Augustine
2. Heild. Monk
3. Hayward. Johnson
4. AD. Melo. Dudley
5. Thompson. Howard
Bring in more depth in FA, but you’re got a much improved team already
I don’t think Cha views Rozier quite as underwater (if at all) as this board did but if LAL could net Rozier+Oubre for the 27′ 1st that’s the deal id look at first. I wouldn;t be interested in a Hayward deal at all if I was LAL …like him healthy but toooo much health risk to pair with LBJ/AD
Brog/Heild is interesting but longer commitments and I don’t see the Brog LBJ overlap working that well
Randle/Fourn seems most likely but worst “court” affect Imo
I like the idea of Houston dishing Gordon Wood Nwaba then cutting both Russ and Wall and going ALL Young….They’ll have their 23 first but after that they are gone so timing feels right for them to just wing it next year with youth, get the exp, and the last high pick
Yeah don’t see Knicks has having the best chances with the emergence of the Hornets and Pacers possibly being interested.
I disagree with Hayward but I think the Lakers should just try land a 2 for 1 type deal using THT if they have too. By that I mean Russ for 2 of Hayward, Rozier, Brogdan and Heild and if they have to give up THT for salary matching.
I personally just think LeBron should move back to point guard and in which case Heild and Hayward would be the best fit.
He’s just to old to play SF now, he’s not as quick and strong as he once was. As a PG he could take a step back and still contest shots really well and wouldn’t get beat as much. Not to mention on offence he could still play bully ball on them
This just in, no one wants THT either.
I get that Laker fans think THT is so good that he should be traded for someone else better. NO ONE WANTS Westbrick
No ones saying that if you pay attention Timb –
This is about offloading salaries and unprotected future draft picks for an expiring, nobodies placing more than an ounce of on court value in RW for 2023 in any of these proposals
Bullcrap it is. The Pacers don’t need you to unload cap space (that they already have). They can trade Brogdon or Hield to an actual real team with real assets. These guys, unlike THT or Westbrook (who wouldn’t play for the Pacers IF he were traded to them). The Pacers promised Halliburton they would be back in the playoffs next season, not saving the Lakers
Dudley? Hes been gone for a long time!
Why would Pacers sign a PG. Don’t see it. Brogdon should be moved, but I don’t see a big market for him. If I’m Pacers I move Brogdon and Buddy for draft picks. Build the team around Haliburton. They should get two solid players with those two #1 picks. I say get more picks …..
If I’m the Pacers, I don’t want to suck for years in the future, and thus I keep my 40% 3 point shooters and not be the Knicks.
Picks suck. This isn’t 2K. The Pacers will trade their leading scorer for a good young player, like they always do. Or, they will keep him and he and Haliburton will be a killer offensive backcourt.
Perhaps Carlisle expressed nervousness about what GM Pritchard will do tradewise, said he would do better, and this was taken as disinterest in the coaching end.
Or not. Probably some moves will be made, tho, and Pritchard has Not been horrible.
Pritchard and Carlisle are on the same page. Carlisle hated LeVert and Sabonis for not fitting in with his 5 out, all shooters offense. Pritchard got rid of them.
So far, how has that worked for him?
I’d say the team is much worse now, right?
I’d say you wrong. Next season’s projected line up of Haliburton, Brogdon, Hield/Durate, Warren, and Turner is good enough to compete for the play-in or better. Add in a top 7 pick and internal improvements and the Pacers are right there.
In essence, it’s worked out great.
Thanks Timb. Not a fan of that offense but I like when there are reasons (for trades).
Some teams (Cavs before injuries) run a 5-out where the wings both post high at the elbows… that offers more choice, and still corner shooters.
Lavert works hard, but nobody knows how his offense sets up.
He doesn’t work hard on defense. Worst team defender I ever saw.
Lavert is pretty solo-minded.
Hield’s assists have doubled with Indy and he looked comfortable up top in an early offense. Is he a PG prospect long-term? Brogdon & Hali are flexible but might weigh in on that. Or Mcconnell if he stays.
Look at all of these experts! No wonder the sports “journalists” just spread rumors and fantasies. Their followers (the Jr GMs of America, love rumors and fantasies. Can any of you even dribble?
Can a GM dribble?— who cares?
