Warriors veteran Andre Iguodala recently compared two third-year players, former teammate Tyler Herro and current teammate Jordan Poole, and thinks both players could be in for big paydays on their next contracts.
“It’s funny. I’m hearing Tyler is looking at a max contract. I’m laughing at Jordan, like, it’s the same thing,” Iguodala said (video link via Anthony Slater of The Athletic).
As third-year former first-round pick, Poole is eligible for a rookie scale extension this summer, though Golden State might opt to wait until after the 2022/23 season to offer him a new deal in order to maintain financial flexibility. He’d be a restricted free agent at that point.
Poole is having a breakout season for the Warriors, averaging 18.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.9 assists on .454/.368/.920 shooting (.602 true) through 74 games (30 minutes per night). He’s been outstanding since the beginning of March, averaging 25.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists on .492/.437/.910 shooting in the past 19 games.
Here’s more from the Pacific Division:
- Warriors guard Klay Thompson will miss Saturday’s game at San Antonio for precautionary reasons, writes Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. Thompson has typically been held out of the second game of back-to-backs, but coach Steve Kerr decided to switch things up and rest him on the first night this time instead. Thompson has been red-hot lately, scoring a combined 69 points over his past two games.
- After Friday’s win over the Thunder, forward Stanley Johnson said he hopes the Lakers exercise their team option to retain him for next season, according to team beat reporter Mike Trudell (Twitter link). “Hopefully I’ve played well enough that they would take me back,” Johnson said.
- Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue said on Friday that Kawhi Leonard hasn’t advanced past individual workouts yet, as Andrew Greif of The Los Angeles Times relays (via Twitter). Leonard has missed the entire season after suffering a torn ACL last June.
- Suns head coach Monty Williams said “it was tough decision for us” to part with Frank Kaminsky, who was released on Thursday. “He meant a lot to us, and me personally, I’m grateful for everything he did for us. I just wish he could’ve gone on with us, but these are tough decisions that we have to make. The cool part was, he totally understood and it just says a lot about who he is as a person,” Williams said (video link from Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic).
If Steve Kerr tries to make JP a sixth man again he’s gotta go
Warriors trade Wiggins/Moody for Suggs or Halliburton
Who says no?
Warriors save $135 million luxury tax
Pacers and Magic have cap room
Warriors say yes but other teams would say no.
Only to Halliburton Suggs doesnt look good enough to be in the rotation yet.
Also Ws are so far over the cap that dumping Wiggins saves you money but doesnt open up a slot to sign anyone so your down a over paid rotation player but get nothing in return but tax savings.
If Wiggins goes its in a salary matching move for one or more other rotation players. This team isnt cheap they wont hurt the chances of winning that much for a little salary relief when they are printing money at Chase…
0.0% chance Indy gives up Halliburton…..especially for that return.
W’s have so many major contract decisions to make going forward because of luxury tax. Wiggins, Poole, Looney, Porter, Payton. Even Klay is already 3 yrs into his 5 yr contract. He might have to take a major paycut in his next contract.
Wiggins is most likely gone because they can’t afford him. Porter is gone if he gets a good offer. Payton will stay because they can give him a lower price contract. Iggy is gone next year. Looney is a big question because if a team goes all out after him with a multi year 10 million plus deal he is gone. Klay no worry since that bridge is 2 years from now.
Only a few teams with cap room this offseason and none look like contenders. The musical chairs of the offseason could hurt the value on a lot of GSW FA.
Wiggins is gone if they find a trade they like for a good player. Or they may let him walk after next season.
Porter started hot but has cooled with his shooting and can be had for a part of the MLE if they want probably.
Payton they have early bird and can offer up to 11M so they can and should resign him for whatever it takes since he is in the top 5 in value by advanced metrics and per 36 on the team.
Iggy is absolutly back unless he decides to retire, and has basically said he wont play for another team.
Loony is good but has no market since his fit is worse with most other teams and he will probably get a new deal for around the same rate he is on. I doubt he has much market.
Belli probably isnt back and they try to upgrade his roster spot with a better stretch 5.
Klay and Green both have 2 more seasons on the deals they signed and probably have a pay cut coming unless they look like max players at the point the deals expire. The team really has a cash crunch next season and then should be in a better situation heading into when the young guys need to get paid. Also the cap is going to jump up one year after that by a lot.
Green is on a team friendly contract now with 4 yr 100m. W’s probably cant afford to keep both Wiseman and Looney, but hopefully Looney is back.
This is very accurate. Memphis additionally were able to develop young players not only physically, but leadershipwise and chemistry. Finally, front office didnt mind young core players using Iggy situation to motivate themselves to impove.
Money is no object to the Warriors, I’m surprised a lot of Warrior fans still can’t see this, they’ll pack as much money as they can on and not break a sweat
The Warriors have 1 BIG call this offseason…That’s putting the + on Wiggins for an elite player or hold firm with the youths (*hint they are the +)
**As Chapman eluded too they can’t just simply let Wiggins dissolve or that {ability} to obtain his contract (AAV) dissolves as well the same day. They are crafty tho, they’ll never let that happen one way or the other
They can compete with any team in the league w/ trade value (Atl as well) . It should be interesting to watch, I think they’ll throw a punch if it’s there and it usually is in the NBA
Luxury tax is always a factor. That’s why they only sign min vet contracts in offseason in Iggy, Beljica, Porter, GP2. W’s also had exception that they did not use. Finally, they could have signed a player or two in buyout mkt and even passed on 10 day contracts because of luxury tax.
They would have used the MLE if Patty Mills or Batum had wanted it. They wouldnt use it when nothing worth it was left.
They passed on the buyout market because a lot of the more interesting buyout candidates didnt get bought out. They only were looking at Belli as a flex spot on the roster since they wouldnt really want to cut any of the 14 others for what was available, and no good stretch 5s that would upgrade Belli got bought out.
They think about the tax, but I dont think it really determined any decisions other than not using it on nobody who would have been in any form worth the cost. Remember GPII was the 15th man and he isnt getting cut Wiseman is the only guy on the 15 not doing much but you dont cut him.
Iggy, kind of a bit hard to respect much your opinion after the way you behaved in MEM, refusing to play & forcing your way out to MIA, right?
Isn’t that what Simmons did this past winter and you kept saying #FreeBenSimmons. STFU and let the grown ups actually talk while you learn something.
Except that he and the team agreed to that arrangement to start the season.
MEM thought they were still rebuilding and tanking and then surprised by competing that season. By the time they were close to relevant it was already a done deal long ago before the season. He went to the team that went to the Finals instead of one that didnt make the playoffs.
This is why I dont understand all the hate in MEM since it was as much the front office wanting him to sit out and be a healthy trade chip that they also got a first from GSW for, so the whole deal went swimmingly for MEM.
Iggy is supposed to be old… he moved young vs Spurs, or at least fresh. He could be good for lots of minutes. I cannot call GSW a soft spot now, tho still not a favorite. Kuminga looked relaxed.
Every year some fans say Wiggins will be gone. And every year he has no demand, so stays. The Wiggins era is the dry years for GSW.
Letting go of Frank The Tank will bring about a new curse on the SUNS franchise.
