Pistons general manager Troy Weaver isn’t sure what kind of trade offers he might get for Jerami Grant this offseason, Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press writes. Grant was a hot name on the rumor mill prior to the trade deadline but the Pistons opted to hold onto their starting power forward. Grant will enter the final year of his three-year, $60MM contract and he’s eligible to sign an extension.
“Jerami demonstrated his efficiency in the way he fit with the group. I’m curious. I’m not sure. The deadline, people had their feelers out but nothing that blew us away,” Weaver said of Grant’s trade market. “Maybe something comes down the pipe. We’ll see. I don’t anticipate it being an avalanche. After the playoffs, some teams will feel like we can add a player or two, and maybe the phone rings a little more. I’m not sure. The landscape of the NBA changes weekly.”
We have more from the Central Division:
- Armed with cap space and another lottery pick, Weaver plans to be proactive this offseason, Sankofa reports in a separate story. “We’re going to look at everything,” Weaver said. “We’re going to be aggressive, turn over every rock and vet it out and try to come back better as a team, whether it’s one guy, two guys or three guys. We’re going to be aggressive in our approach and make sure that we come out ready to go and hopefully put a better product on the floor.”
- In the same story, Weaver hinted he wants to retain restricted free agent Marvin Bagley III, who was acquired Sacramento at the deadline. “Coach (Dwane Casey) and I talked about this, I didn’t give coach enough tools and the Bagley trade was a big tool for us,” Weaver said. “We didn’t have enough athleticism up front. We needed to address that, and we did. I feel better for the team that we were able to acquire that young man and give us a tool we didn’t have.”
- Cory Joseph has no doubts that Cade Cunningham will be one of the league’s brightest stars for many years to come, Keith Langlois of Pistons.com writes. “He’s beyond his years,” Joseph said. “He’s already a star but he’s going to be a superstar in this league sooner rather than later. He’s an amazing talent. We all know what he can do with a basketball, but he doesn’t get sped up. Mentally, he’s there every possession, every play, and he wants it. You can tell in those big moments. He wants to be in those moments. He wants to be great.”
Would love to see Knicks get in on Grant. Mitch and a pick can do it.
Always liked Bagley. Seems he’s found a home now. Young players only need to develop to prove their worth. Not prove our perception of their worth. At 28 mins he put up 15 and 7. With him and Stewart they are set at the 4. And both can play small ball 5. Pistons have alot of young talent on this roster. And are now about to add a top 3 pick. Seems Ivey would be the ideal pick here. Wonder if they would take Holmgren ??
I Like your thoughts here Al, but would love to see Pistons get one of the big 3 PF with their lottery pick. I think Grant in New York would be perfect fit. Not sure about compensation though, I thought Robinson was a FA this year, but not sure.
One reason I don’t like the Ivey pick though is I still believe in Killian Hayes, kid is still very young and Hayes has pretty much played one full season of games in the two years we have had him, his hamstring injury really hurt his development that first year. The light bulb started to go off at the end of the season, he works on his shot this off-season and look out.
But we will see, this will be a fun off-season to watch as a Pistons fan. We are going to be scary in a year or two and my hope is Cade and Killian will be our starting guards or Cade running point and Killian working with second unit possibly. But together that length at the guard spot is insane.
This dude is shooting below 43% (!) FG lasy two years and wants a 120 mil extension – why is everyone after him?
I assume because they believe he will shoot closer to his Denver tenure numbers if he isn’t the top option but is more of a #2/#3 role. Part of the drop in efficiency is due to the workload increase and if he goes to someone like the Trailblazers and is the clear #2 option or #3 depending on the night Anfernee is having he will probably have a nice uptick in shooting efficiency while still being a versatile, switchable defender.
Steph Curry has shot below 44% 2 out of the last 3 years, why would anybody want him? More to look at then 1 stat
Steph played 5 games in one of those years, poor argument.
Exactly, he was also a finalist for most improved player his first year in Detroit. Yeah that one stat doesn’t paint the whole picture.
He also seems like one player that doesn’t have the Kyrie type syndrome. Can really be selfless on a team.
Jerami is fools gold. Pistons were smart to wait. They were not playing to win this season anyway. Can’t wait to see them in attack mode.
Yeah just depends what your expectations are for Grant, he isn’t a number 1 option on a champion, but can be a part of something special in the right environment.
