Luka Doncic ranks among the top five in the league in scoring and assists but he’s getting very little Most Valuable Player buzz. The Mavericks guard shrugs it off, according to Callie Caplan of the Dallas Morning News.
“We’re winning. That’s what I care [about]. Our goal is to get home advantage,” he said. “We’re so close. We’ve got three games left, and that’s our goal right now.”
Assistant coach Peter Patton said Doncic deserves more consideration. “If you watch every game since the All-Star break or just before the All-Star break, it’s been go time,” he said. “I mean, he’s been outstanding. Arguably, you can say he’s the best player in the league. He is the most valuable player in the league, in my opinion, because he can score, he can pass, he can defend, he can rebound. He makes his teammates better, and I think that’s the biggest thing.”
We have more from the Southwest Division:
- The Spurs will be without their top player, Dejounte Murray, for the third consecutive game when they face the Nuggets on Tuesday, Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News tweets. Murray is battling an upper respiratory illness. Currently holding the 10th and final spot in the Western Conference play-in picture, San Antonio has won its last two games without the All-Star guard.
- Rockets rookie big man Alperen Sengun said he will play for the Turkish National Team at EuroBasket 2022 this summer, Adam Spolane of SportsRadio 610 tweets. Sengun plans to participate in Houston’s Summer League minicamp prior to playing in the international tournament.
- The Grizzlies’ Robert Pera is the third-richest owner in the league and his deep pockets will help the much-improved team maintain its new standing as a Western Conference contender, Brian Windhorst of ESPN writes. The Grizzlies haven’t spent into the luxury tax since 2005, but Pera is willing to do that, according to Windhorst. The team has also been sending signals that it intends to be aggressive in retaining and acquiring talent, Windhorst adds.
Doncic has the best floor vision in the NBA. His game is so impressive.
His good friend in Denver might take issue with that (actually he wouldn’t, but his fans might).
Yes but his whining about no whistles are starting to be irritating. He watches LeBron too much.
They used to whine when the whistle blew and they didn’t think they fouled the guy. Now they whine when the whistle DOESN’T blow when they drive to the basket. Major flaw but everything else about his game is good.
His assistant coach thinks he’s the best player in the league? That’s a very fair and un-biased opinion
Not the best this year, nope… but if you take away his bad start of the season, he definitely is up there for the 2nd half of the season he has been an MVP candidate for sure, but alas, counts all season, right?
MVP race stands as…
1/ Jokic
2/ Giannis
3/ Embiid
4/ LBJ
5/ Luka
LeBron has put up other worldly stats, which is why I can see why you put him 4th. However, you can’t dismiss the Lakers likely missing the playoffs and LBJ’s often dismissive attitude this season.
You could ask many people who aren’t his assistant coach who they would take to start their franchise and a whole lot of them would say Luka. So your sarcasm is pretty lame.
Yeah but he’s top 5 in scoring. Not 1 or 2 or 3… but in the top 5! He must be MVP
The Griz are in a ridiculously good sitiation. They could add a max if they wanted to even without Pera’s generousity. May have an extra good first. Nice shade of blue all over.
Memphis is looking good. May be the best at finding talent. Brooks Bane anyone could have drafted. Zaire Williams looks like an awesome pick too.
Not to mention Clarke, Tillman, and obvious Ja and JJJ. Undrafted pick ups Tillie and Konchar. Semi rehabbed Josh Jackson too
Memphis looks good for now but I can see them start making some bad deals soon. This is about the time they signed Chandler Parsons last time around d which was absolutely horrible. I can’t think of a single free agent worth a max deals and they will probably start overpaying their own talent too. Most NBA teams can’t stop handing out max deals to every homegrown player. Look at the Hawks
You haven’t been paying attention then. This is an entirely different front office. You need to take a look at the contracts they have signed; Brooks, Jones, Valanciunas, Melton, Jackson Jr. None of which are overpays and could argue all are very team favorable deals.
