ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said last week that “numerous” league executives suggested to him that Lakers star Anthony Davis doesn’t have significant trade value due to his injury history. However, execs who spoke to Sean Deveney of Heavy.com scoffed at that idea.
One general manager told Deveney that there would be “29 teams ready with offers” if the Lakers made Davis available. An Eastern Conference executive said the idea of Davis not having much value is “crazy.”
“Look, it is beauty in the eye of the beholder. But he is an elite talent and he is 29 years old,” the East exec told Deveney. “Everybody wants him, everybody thinks that if they get their hands on him, they can keep him healthy, etc., etc.
“Now, can you get the kind of offer the Lakers gave up when they traded for him (in 2019)? No, of course not. But a team like Chicago, where he is from, they would bend over backwards to get him. Dallas, putting him with Luka (Doncic)? Of course, they would. Phoenix, Miami, any team that really wants to take that next step. The injury is a risk, but the payoff you get if you can keep him on the floor is worth it.”
While there seems to be no real consensus on Davis’ value, it may be a moot point this offseason, since there’s no indication the Lakers would consider moving him.
Here’s more from Deveney:
- It’s possible the Rockets will re-sign free agent point guard Dennis Schröder and then look to trade him during the 2022/23 season, like Boston did this past year, a source tells Deveney. Although Deveney suggests Houston could use part of its mid-level exception to retain Schröder, the Non-Bird exception would allow an offer up to about $7MM, which could be enough. It’s also worth pointing out that signing a one-year deal with the Rockets would give Schröder the ability to veto a trade next season.
- The Bulls are one team to watch as a potential free agent suitor for Schröder, but probably only if they trade Coby White, according to Deveney, who notes that Schröder had his best year playing for Billy Donovan in Oklahoma City in 2019/20.
- Executives around the NBA believe the Knicks – who added Evan Fournier and Kemba Walker last summer – are more likely to pursue “young-ish” players with some upside this offseason rather than going after veterans again. Deveney mentions Tyus Jones, Mohamed Bamba, Chris Boucher, and Schröder as possible targets, though he acknowledges that some of those players aren’t particularly young.
AD value = Klay + Wiseman?
Warriors are deep enough to rest AD
Lakers need to trade Westbrook first, then hire coach
It said an east coast executive. Isn’t Rich Paul a west coast executive?
@bigeasye
Paul isn’t a team employee smarty pants.
Knicks can target every restricted free agent but they will get nothing
Yep
I have as much faith in SAS being right as I do about my chances of winning the lotto tomorrow. The man is a caricature and gets paid to say outrageous things to the delight of our silly society. He’s good for one or two funny clips on Twitter. Then the schtick gets old really fast.
Smith is a performer, not an analyst.
I used to write for numerous websites where the goal was to write articles taking outrageous positions to get clicks.
That’s his vibe. There is nothing sincere about it.
ESPN on a whole is just complete dog doo
AD for John Collins, Huerter. and a 1st.
Westbrick for Gordon Hayward and Terry Rozier
THT, Nunn, Hawks 1st, LAL 1st for Myles Turner
Turner – Dwight
Collins – Melo
LBJ – Hayward
Huerter – Reeves
Rozier – TBD (Dragic?)
Much better balance. Better bench.
I’d do the second two moves and just keep AD.
To me, the Lakers only real chance at another ring is AD and Bron being healthy for a playoff run surrounded by … guys who are better than Stanley Johnson and Austin Reeves
And even then it’s probably somewhat of a longshot. But an LBJ-AD-Hayward-Rozier-Turner closing 5 in theory is definitely interesting.
Losing ad and gaining Hayward does nothing for me . You get a guy who can’t play more than 50 games a season . Than terry ok at best nothing flashy . I like the ad move tho Collins is pretty good on d and huerter could be a upside. I have a hard time seeing a myle trade happing . It seem to me pacers are holding on as long as they can. Or a trade would of happen
Pacers asking price has always been 2 1sts it seems.
None of those trades have any chance of happenning.
Davis doesn’t have much value anymore because of his salary than anything else. In a league where the cap is like 125 million, if you’re going to pay somebody 1/3 of it, He better be worth it. And he’s not. Suckers beware.
Sign and trade LaVine and Patrick Williams for AD and THT.
3 team deal
Lakers- Terry Rozier and Julius Randle
Knicks- Hayward and lakers first 2027
Hornets- Russ, Kemba and a pair of seconds 1 each from NY and LA
Sign and trade Malik Monk for Justin Holiday and a second round pick.
In FA get Tristan Thompson and Frank Kaminsky.
1. Rozier. Nunn. Augustine
2. LaVine. Holiday. Reaves
3. LBJ. Melo. Johnson
4. Randle. Williams. Kaminsky
5. Thompson. Howard.
Put the pipe down man.
If I were a Laker, I’d trade Westbrook and 2027 unprotected First to Hornets for Hayward, Rozier and this year First then draft Jaden Ivey
Hayward + Rozier + Ivey >> John Wall
Lakers would have 3 new quality starter
Wall is only worth vet min salary
Why would Hornets do that? They’ll then be in buyout mode and be worse off in 2023. Rozier has movable contract. Hayward could be moved for the right exchange. Maybe they do something for Gobert. But I see Dntoni going to Charlotte and I don’t see them tanking
Just trade Tht for an expiring and pray for health
I imagine Jeanie will create a headache that lasts longer than 2023 off her 2022 blunders tho
No news will be good news this offseason
Best Laker trading advice.
How about unrestraining Melo too… Would you believe he had his highest 2point FG% ever? (52%) That translates to a green light to do his thing, not just fit in as a backup.
Lakers just need to rethink who is taking the shots… reverse Westbrick (16 FG pg) and Melo (11). Get Monk to play some D and Westy to rebound. The pace will be heroball-slow anyway due to James and the need to post up AD.
AD isn’t going anywhere as long as LeBron is there. Being in win-now mode is (mostly) about the best team you can possibly put out there. Not about the team you’re most likely to have to put out there factoring in likely missed games, and certainly not about any quaint concept of having salary match on court production.
As far as his value, I’m sure it’s down in most fantasy leagues. 2k too, I suspect (others here would know better). In the NBA, though, if he were put on then market, his value would be VERY high, and he’d be pursued by almost every contender. Simply because the LAL aren’t the only team in win-now mode.
AD would most likely have a say in wherever he went tbh.
Knicks have enough young players and the 11th pick. Just dump as many veterans as possible, which forces Thibs to play the kids. If Randle continues his poor play and being a malcontent, then you flip him at deadline or next off-season for pennies on the dollar. This FO got ahead of itself, jumped the gun and burned. It happens. Just refocus back on the build, lick ya wounds and keep it moving.
The Knicks should just shut it down and tank for the next 3 seasons and hope they could get out of their own way. Pathetic franchise.
