Appearing on the French online show First Team, veteran forward Nicolas Batum was asked about his future and suggested that he plans to remain with the Clippers for the foreseeable future, as Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints relays. Batum, speaking in French, said what translates to “Tyronn Lue saved my life,” heaping praise on the Clippers’ head coach.
Batum, who has a $3.33MM player option for the 2022/23 season, was waived by Charlotte during the 2020 offseason and signed a minimum-salary contract days later with the Clippers. He has revitalized his career in the last two years in Los Angeles, starting 92 of 126 games and averaging 26.2 MPG.
“Whenever you have a player speak on you like that, it’s a great feeling because that’s what it’s all about,” Lue told Azarly when asked about Batum’s comments. “It’s about the players and trying to get the best out of players. A lot of times, the players bring the best out of a coach as well. For Nico, a guy who has been in this league for a long time and a great veteran player, just to have him say those words, that means a lot.”
Here’s more from around the Pacific:
- John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 (Twitter link) considers it extremely unlikely that the Suns will let restricted free agent Deandre Ayton walk for nothing or that Ayton will accept his one-year qualifying offer. In Gambadoro’s view, a new deal between Ayton and the Suns, a sign-and-trade agreement, or an offer sheet that the Suns match are the only realistic outcomes.
- Gary Payton II (fractured left elbow) is beginning to increase his on-court activity, according to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, who posted a Twitter video of Payton going through a workout on Tuesday. Assuming the Warriors finish off Dallas, it still seems possible Payton could return at some point in the NBA Finals, Slater adds.
- Trevion Williams (Purdue), JD Notae (Arkansas), Tyson Etienne (Wichita State), and David McCormack (Kansas) are among the prospects that worked out for the Kings on Monday and Tuesday this week, writes Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee. Anderson wonders if the Kings could end up drafting two Boilermakers, with Jaden Ivey in play at No. 4 and Williams a potential target in the second round.
- Dan Woike and Broderick Turner of The Los Angeles Times take a closer look at Darvin Ham, Terry Stotts, and Kenny Atkinson, breaking down the pros and cons of each of the Lakers’ reported head coaching finalists.
Hate the Suns Ayton smearing campaign from character issues, laziness, not focused enough, and on and on. Not the best way to treat uour #1 pick who played his heart out for the team for 4 years. Lame to say the least !
The question is, does he play his heart out?
@greg1 and @mrsshy
Ayton is dependent on being given the ball. His shooting % was at 63% last year and his career number is around 55%. he has great footwork around the basket and a nice lefty hook. GIVE HIM THE BALL MORE. I think with 18-20 shots per game can translate into 25 ppg.
The question is . Is he worth all this money he wants? At best he the number 4 best center in the league maybe even worse. He a avg center at best he not that special
Do you think there’s 10 teams in the league? Someone get this man a list of NBA teams & a calculator
Right now I’d rank Ayton as the 6th best center in the league. Jokic, Embiid, Gobert, Towns, Adebayo then Ayton. I’d estimate there are around 75 centers in the league give or take. That would make him rank somewhere around the 85th percentile. He’s also relatively young and has room to grow. With all that considered I’d say that he’s very above average as a center and definitely special.
So 15% of players are worth a max?— yikes!
Left out Davis, Jarrett, Sabonis, & Capela. Wood, Valencunas, Horford, Williams provide as much in a game though are not as valuable. Blazers can’t win without Nurkic. Not all of those are better but the gap is not large… Max is twice what they may be getting.
Just b/c he was drafted ahead of Doncic.
Portland definitely can win & has won without Nurkic
From someone lives in AZ and has watched Ayton during his Suns career, I can tell you that almost NO ONE out here has ever claimed that he’s “played his heart out” for the team.
Literally every guy on this site is like this smh. Is this the maga nba site & nobody told me?
Another racist nonsensical post from Sank. You’re posting in the thread of a guy who thinks that Ayton “played his heart out”. So no, not everyone is anti-max-for-Ayton.
Trump has nothing to do with it. Ayton’s lack of bend does; Duffy’s power play does; the Suns’ lack of capspace does.
Is it a smearing campaign, or are those well known things over the last several years? You keep saying a lot of the same things about Ayton and Chris Paul. Seems to me you just dont like Chris Paul, or really think Ayton is way more valuable than he actually is…
Again, he is being offered an overpay already. If he doesnt want it, that’s fine, and it’s also fine for Phoenix to then explore moving him, add depth, get a comparable way cheaper replacement, and continue on
Truth hurts. It’s a fact that he’s inconsistent, doesn’t use his size or strength enough, is temperamental and definitely not worth the max. Only the best centers are worth top dollar. Rudy is proving he’s not worth all that money and Bam too these last couple playoffs. Only a silly team would pay Ayton over 25 million
thats what i thought too. if Williams called him out in that blowout, how about sharing the blame to CP3 and their best player Booker who was unimpressive down the stretch? You cant have him defending Luka and think he can shut him down lol.
Everyone knew Batum was headed back to LAC for a 3rd contract as soon as he signed his second 1+1 at well below his market. LAC now has the EBRs to pay him on a make-up basis. His love for Lue aside. But expressing it might help with his place in the rotation which, with Lue, can change by the minute.
I support Magic Johnson
In my opinion, it is about vision and outlook
Keeping Westbrook = Big Picture
Compare to 76ers GMs
76ers acquire Harden = Small Picture
Let’s talk about vision.
Batum was solid average & useful for about 10 years until he wound down from criticism that his overpay held his team back. He’s still decent. I don’t think anyone saved him, he just has ability to fall back on.
The only problems with Batum in his career are inconsistencies/disappearances and some injuries. He is still really valuable on the floor. I still think he could get a pretty nice deal in free agency, with so many teams looking for pieces like him. Him staying might make Otto Porter more valuable in free agency.
Pretty much any contending team would want Batum for the right price.
John Gambardo with the HOTTEST Take like ever huh?
Batum has always had a nice game. He got buried on the bench because Charlotte expected him to be something he wasn’t.
Ayton is not worth a max contract. Simple as that. A great player, nontheless…..
