Kyle Neubeck of PhillyVoice.com has been told it’s “relatively likely” that the Nets will take advantage of their ability to defer their acquisition of the Sixers‘ first-round pick a year and will opt to acquire Philadelphia 2023 first-rounder instead of 2022’s No. 23 overall selection.
The Nets have until June 1 to finalize that decision, so nothing is set in stone yet, but the Sixers are preparing as if they’ll have this year’s No. 23 pick, says Neubeck.
Assuming the 76ers do control that pick, it could be used to add a young, inexpensive draftee to the roster or included in a trade package for a veteran. Neubeck points to Ohio State’s E.J. Liddell and Baylor’s Kendall Brown as long, switchable forwards who may be available at No. 23 and who might appeal to Philadelphia.
Here’s more from Neubeck:
- Even if the Sixers attempt to pursue another star player this offseason, don’t expect the team to dangle guard Tyrese Maxey to make it happen, says Neubeck. “Maxey is as close to untouchable as you could be,” a source told PhillyVoice.
- Matisse Thybulle is a more realistic trade candidate, but the Sixers won’t move him just to get off his contract, according to Neubeck, who suggests that Danny Green‘s ACL tear has made Thybulle’s defense even more important to the team. If he’s traded, expect it to be for a roster upgrade, Neubeck writes.
- No decisions have been made yet on Green, who is expected to miss at least half of next season and whose $10MM salary for 2022/23 is non-guaranteed. Green’s $10MM would have to be partially or fully guaranteed in order for it to count for outgoing salary-matching purposes, so he seems to me more likely to be waived than traded. According to Neubeck, it’s possible that if Green is released, he could eventually return on a smaller salary.
- There are suspicions in league coaching circles that the Lakers haven’t given up on the idea that Doc Rivers could become available for their head coaching job, Marc Stein writes in his latest Substack article. Neubeck doesn’t dismiss that idea, but observes that the Sixers have been “remarkably consistent” in their messaging – both publicly and privately – that Rivers isn’t going anywhere.
If we keep pick 23, I have three guys I like
Max Christie-SF-Mich State
Bryce McGowens-SG-Nebraska
Christian Koloko-C-Arizona
Bassey >> Koloko… McGowens & Springer are very similar guys & Philly spent a 1st rd pick on Springer just last yr… Christie could be a Kev Huerter/Voshon Lenard type if he reaches his potential but Dieng is much more versatile & is honestly just better than Christie rn while also having a higher ceiling
I got Philly taking the young French wing Ousmane Dieng with the #23 pick. I could def see them going for Kendall Brown if he’s still there but Dieng is sorta perfect for them in a bunch of ways. Maxey, Bassey, Springer, Petrusev & Dieng would be a nice young core to build with after Embiid’s injuries eventually end his career prematurely (hopefully we get a good 5+ more yrs from him but all signs are pointing away from him having Kareem or Mailman type longevity)… also should be said that Russ for Tobias & DGreen works perfectly as far as the financials & could be beneficial for both teams
Only if the Lakers are send 2 unprotected 1sts with Russ. Tobias is way more valuable than Russ
A boat is a boat, but a mystery box could be ANYTHING! Even a boat!
Figure out a deal that gets you up to like 16ish and take Agbaji.
Bassey & 23 is all I’d ask for the 16 pick if I was the Hawks gm
Not sure Agbaji will be available even there
Agbaji is pretty basic. He might last. Kansas guys have nott worked out in the NBA of late. Since ’14
Thybulle to the Bulls for 18 might get you close enough
If
Harden Embiid Harris = $130 million a year
They need to trade Thybulle to avoid the tax
Thybulle market price
4 year 43 million
If saving $ is the objective it seems far more logical to trade Harris. He makes $77M over the next 2 seasons while Thybulle will make a lil over $10M during the same timespan
It is hard to trade Harris to upgrade because they don’t have future Firsts to attach.
All 30 teams are interested in Thybulle. Easy!
Oftentimes the necessary thing to do isn’t easy. However in this case it sorta is. As I stated earlier on this same thread Philly could trade Tobias & DGreen to LAL for Russell Westbrook. They’d save about $40M in salary alone in 2024 by not having to pay Tobias. They’d have the best guard trio in the East w/ Harden/Russ/Maxey. They wouldn’t have to waste $ on Green who probably won’t play until after Valentines if then
No one wants Russ…I would rather keep Tobias on his contract. I don’t think Tobias will be a sixer next year, and will be even more surprised if he is not gone before the deadline….but any no way we are bringing in Russ lol
Rather presumptuous & narcissistic to say no one wants him just bc you dont
Do you really think Harden/Westbrook 2.0 is the answer for any team? Nothing against Maxey as he’s a stud but I can think of about 13 other current guard trios in the east I’d rather have than those 3, the only exception would be the Knicks.
Guess technically it would be Harden, Westbrook 3.0
Some teams are going to lose free agents, and can try for a sign and trade if they insist on sixers. I mean heck D russelll was traded for Durant.
Nets have plenty youth on their team. Is the 23rd selection really going to help them next yr. It would seem only in a trade. Imo I don’t see the Nets taking the pick this yr. They have FA issues. And need to address their payroll this yr.
On the other hand . That pick can help the Sixers. Even if they use it to get a vet. At 23 they can add a shooter or get lucky with Jovic. But a trade of the pick seems like best move. Maybe for a guy like Terrence Ross. Offense off the bench.
Gee thanks for synopsizing the article for us
