Heat guard Tyler Herro (groin strain) will warm up with the intent of playing in Sunday’s Game 7 against the Celtics, the team announced on social media (Twitter link). The other players on the official injury report — Kyle Lowry, Max Strus, P.J. Tucker and Gabe Vincent — will do the same.
Herro suffered the injury during the second half of Game 3. He missed Games 4, 5 and 6 as a result, with Miami going 1-2 during those outings. The Heat have missed his scoring presence, as the 22-year-old averaged 20.7 points per game on 45% shooting this season.
Herro’s production has dropped during the playoffs. In 14 games, he’s averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 26.7 minutes per contest, shooting 41% from the floor and just 23% from distance.
Herro won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award this season. He made significant progress in his recovery, one that could’ve lasted two-to-four weeks during the regular season, as ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne previously reported (video link).
Game 7
You don’t do any more questionables
Play
As a Celtics fan, I’m happy Herro is back, may the best team wins.
Best team is not in there… so it can’t win sadly!
My homeboy Tyler!
Gm 7 ….. let’s go
Not sure this is a good thing, as a Heat fan…
i get what youre saying but u put ur best players on the court and may the best man win
You put your best combinations on the floor to matchup against them…its a make or miss series, so little things are especially important
Agreed, As a Celtics fan. But as a Celtics fan, I like Dipo out there too.
8 missed fts in the first half reminds me of so many times over the last 6 years where that killed the Heat
Make or miss, and the Heat missed a lot, plus the missed FTs. Officiating was a clown show all series, but they still could have won it with the guys who were supposed to play, or making free throws, which has killed them over and over again for 6 years…
Now we get a matchup I wanted to see a few years ago
…I also have to question why Jimmy rose up for that 3, in a 2 point game at the end. Not just saying it b/c he missed. It was a bad decision. 5-27 from 3, and he leans into it, totally off balance in transition, with momentum to drove by Horford with nobody in the paint…I guess he was trying to step on their throat there, but that was the season
Still, I blame the rotation decisions and missed fts over everything else
…I also just found out about the Strus 3 being taken away situation, and all I can say is clown show. Heat would have been up 1 there, and Jimmy takes it to the basket, and they’re up 3 with less than 14 seconds left
better team won ☹️ I admit it
Heat gave it their best and it wasn’t enough
Real Heat fans don’t make excuses, so shut your mouth and pay respect cause it’s surely damn due
After the sadistic defense they just withstood, the Celtics are battle ready and proven
Their time is NOW
They match up excellent with the Warriors and they’re not rusty, in fact razor sharp
Warriors in 7, but I’m rooting for Celtics
They’re similar teams. Things could have been different either way. I never suggested there was zero reason for the Celtics to win. I said it would be a make or miss series, and it was. I picked them as the number 1 seed in the east the last 2 years, and wanted to see them matchup with GS a few years ago
This was another series loss that can be attributed to Spoelstra’s mystifying use—or misuse—of personnel. This was Jimmy against the Celtics, with occasional help from Lowry and Bam. But let’s keep hearing from national pundits as to what a genius Spoelstra is. Incredible.
The roster is what it is but when you’ve done your best to either crush the confidence of one of your best shooters while not playing another one is ridiculous.
Sure, Lowery was inconsistent and Bam needed to dominate the interior, but wow, you had spurts where you really needed big time shots and were relying on guys like Strus?
I get it. The game resembles street ball more than the period where great coaches drew up plays. But “great” coaches now at least know how to manage games in terms of personnel. This guy just never has. Hats off for Butler. Courageous effort
Rooting hard for the Warriors.
Again, I do think Spo messed this up for the Heat, but it’s also only the 3rd time in 14 years, and 2 of those times were back to back. He is also the reason we made the finals in 2020, immediately using all the right rotations the moment the playoffs started that year, after messing around literally all season.
It was also a make or miss series. It’s his fault the spacing wasnt as good, but its not his fault they shot the ball as poorly as they did, with opportunities, and it’s also not his fault they missed 8 fts in a game that came down to the final possession. It’s also not his fault that secaucus, New Jersey took away the 3 point shot that would have meant they had the lead at the end, when Jimmy could have made it a 3 point game in the final seconds, and they would be going to the finals themselves.
Not as bad as other things that have happened, like Eddie House over Patrick Beverley.
I thought Nick Nurse was a genius a couple of years ago, as he manipulated his lineups based on matchups perfectly, but he has done the opposite since. Even Steve Kerr messed up last year at times.
3 times in 14 years. That’s better than almost everyone else. Never is a ridiculous statement. I put a lot of this on him, but they still could have won several different ways
I dunno, formerlyz. That 2020 run seemed to be a nice combination of the stars aligning. Jimmy was Jimmy, but Herro would step up and when he went cold, Duncan would get hot. In the middle of all of it was Bam underneath. And Crowder and Dragic were huge elements
Don’t know if it was Spoelstra or Riley, but the roster changed drastically when the decision to bring Lowry in meant no more Dragic and Crowder went west
To me, this run was all Butler. There were sporadic contributions from others and as stated before, some really questionable personnel decisions in each series, so much so that it deserves critique.
I think Spoelstra is like any other coach. He thrives when he has all the right pieces. But he has never been able to sense and utilize guys in game situations that dictate having more than just one star
I had been complaining all year in 2020, and then from game 1 of the playoffs, he did everything I had talked about. Before not using Bjelica last year/using Dedmon too much, his only previous time he messed up before this situation with the matchup was against the Suprs in 2014, where the Spurs shot the lights out, and it might not have mattered. That year, he sat Shane Battier, when we were winning, and Rashard Lewis for whatever reason (I even would have accepted Beasley in certain lineups), and decided that even though we had played a certain way for 3 years, to do the opposite, and he played Ray Allen and Chris Andersen 40 minutes a game. I wanted to ask Shane so badly if he was hurt in that series, when I met him a couple of years ago, but couldn’t do it. I also almost asked Spo that same night, but felt it wasnt the right call that moment…
Anyway, he did mess up the rotations these last 2 series, but he also almost had it, and made 1 tiny adjustment, at least going away from Dedmon. I just wish he would have done the other stuff I talked about all series, but again, they still could have won it anyway, and sometimes this is a make or miss league, sometimes your entire team is injured every year for 8 straight seasons, or sometimes secaucus, New Jersey decides to take 3 points away from you way later than reviews are supposed to happen in timeouts on totally inaccurate reasoning
My gripe with Spoelstra in 2020 and to a lesser extent, the last two seasons, was his innate ability to constantly fall asleep with regards to his bench, whether it was guys who didn’t start or players he took out and forgot about.
I don’t think that was so much of the problem here but rather just a bullet point. On one hand, you had the complete misuse of Duncan and then the weird management of Herro, which also hurt. I get that he went stone cold against Boston but I also get that his confidence seemed shot. Don’t know that coach did that confidence any favors by his sub schemes
From afar, I’ll never see Strus or Oladipo as answers here.
In a short series, anything can happen of course, but this one had a simple fact: Jimmy willed the team to wins, nothing more and his final shot choice notwithstanding.
Its going to be an interesting off season. Hard to see them getting to this pinnacle again with the roster as is. As stated previously, they messed with a nice roster after ‘20 and have an odd mix here
Herro didnt play b/c he was hurt, but he also shouldnt have played in this matchup anyway
As for 2020, the entire team got hurt in the finals when they were winning by 18, and they had a high positive net rating with their 3 best players on the floor (Jimmy, Bam, Goran)
If you’re talking about Crowder leaving, they offered him more money, and he chose to leave. Not much you can do about that, and I dont see how that would be Spo’s fault. Maybe 1 thing I would say about 2020 in the finals, even with all the injuries is maybe they should have used Olynyk at the 5 more often, but they struggled against KCP and Markieff Morris, and obviously LeBron
As for in game rotations, I dont know what you mean at all. During the regular season, he usually messes around and doesnt necessarily use all the right combinations all the time, but in terms of during games in general, I dont know what you mean
I don’t know what to make from the Herro injury comments other than gleaning his play from watching from afar. I know Jackson and Coach had a lot of questions on broadcasts
I salute your incredible, encyclopedia-like memory of the past three seasons, truly remarkable. Please know that I am not able to see a majority of games from up here in the rust belt. Just always seemed to me that rotations were odd
And you refreshed my memory about Crowder. Thanks for that
Ya I have a problem lol, but I appreciate the compliment
Are you saying they were suggesting he wasnt hurt? Wouldnt be off brand for them, especially Mark Jackson, but he has a groin injury that would keep him out a few weeks, and those groin injuries are legit, and can lead to other problems. I actually had an issue on both sides for like 5 months relatively recently that really sucked, and really made it difficult to move certain ways
I understand. It’s also getting harder to watch as much basketball with all the other things surrounding the game now, like the commentary, media, social media toxicity, sensationalism, and stuff like that
I think very little was made of Herro’s injury—I read much more here. A great deal was made of his shooting woes and if/when he was going to re-enter games.
I generally like this A-team of broadcasting units. They provide a great deal of insight and aren’t afraid to find fault with coaches or players when something is amiss
But you’re right about the sensationalism present in all broadcasting now. It’s getting harder to watch any sport now, as guys like me, who appreciate defense in basketball, football or baseball are pushed as dinosaurs as the emphasis is on scoring in any method possible
Thanks. I enjoy your comments
I honestly cant stand Mark Jackson. I love Hubie Brown. I grew up with dr Jack Ramsay, and learned so much about the game from him. Guys like those 2 arent around anymore, and it’s sad. I wish Pat Riley would go back on commentary b/c it’s sorely needed, but that that isn’t going to happen. Dont know how much h longer we’ll have Hubie Brown, but I hope to get to hear him as much as possible. That’s one thing I’ve missed out on these last couple of years, not watching as many games as I usually do
In baseball, we still have John Williams, and others, but a lot of guys are being replaced for way worse people, and its sad. At least there are more guys still around for now than in basketball.
It’s funny you brought the broadcasting angle up. I’m always taken aback that today’s broadcasters are almost more akin to cheerleaders for a given team or a sport in general than people with insights into and knowledge of the game.
I remember Ramsay well, as a coach and analyst. Old school is still the best school
They’re all trying to get themselves over on social media, instead of teaching the game
Heat died by the three – shooting 6-30 at home was sad.
It will be interesting to see if the Celtics try to push the pace against GSW like they did against the Heat.
They were 3rd in the NBA in 3 pt percentage, but they didnt have 1 of the best shooters in the league on the floor, which would have given them more space, and probably would have helped other guys knock down more shots
