JULY 6, 6:38pm: The Bucks’ deal with Ingles is now official, the team announced in a press release.
“Joe is a proven shot maker who will add great depth to our roster,” general manager Jon Horst said. “He is a terrific person and teammate who will fit in well with our team and community. We’re thrilled to welcome Joe and his family to Milwaukee.”
JULY 6, 2:29pm: The Bucks have issued a press release announcing their new deal with Carter and have also officially re-signed Matthews, per NBA.com’s transactions log. The Ingles signing figures to be formalized very soon.
JUNE 30, 6:04pm: Free agent forward Joe Ingles has agreed to a one-year contract with the Bucks worth $6.5MM, agent Mark Bartelstein tells Michael Scotto of HoopsHype (Twitter link). Ingles’ wife Renae first broke the news on Twitter.
The Bucks have also agreed to bring back a pair of their own free agents, agreeing to a one-year deal with swingman Wesley Matthews and a two-year pact with guard Jevon Carter, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter links).
The $6.5MM salary for Ingles indicates he’ll be getting the team’s taxpayer mid-level exception. Carter’s deal will be worth $4.6MM over two years, with a player option on year two, tweets Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. That figure suggests Carter may be getting slightly above the veteran’s minimum using his Non-Bird rights.
It’s a somewhat surprising use of Milwaukee’s taxpayer mid-level exception, given that Ingles just underwent surgery on a torn ACL in February. The 34-year-old seems extremely unlikely to be ready to go by the fall and may not get back on the court until 2023. If and when he’s healthy though, he’ll be a nice fit for a Bucks team that could use his ball-handling, shooting, and defensive versatility.
As for Matthews and Carter, they played modest reserve roles for the Bucks in 2021/22, but should be useful depth pieces. Matthews, in particular, had a strong playoff run, starting all 12 of the Bucks’ postseason contests and making 40.0% of his threes.
Don’t get me wrong I love Joe Ingles but this takes up their MLE and a roster spot for a guy that most likely won’t play this season.
Why Ingles?? He’s hurt. Why not spend on someone that can actually PLAY?!
I swung and Missed badly with Joe ingles. When he got hurt last year I said he was done and wouldn’t get another contract.
What this says is that the man is very well respected in the league for what he brings on and off the court. His game had already started to slip pre-injury last year so to me the torn acl was the final nail that broke the camel’s back. Evidence of today’s signing says otherwise.
You don’t see too many admit their misses on here. Props to you sir
Nice of you to say but I’m sure there’s a couple guys that remember me getting my loudspeaker tuned up with this very Proclamation. I think tacocat is a jazz fan and a couple other guys probably remember too. But yeah, i appreciate you saying something nice like that. Not many guys do THAT either. Appreciate it and props back to you !!
I do remember and I with a heavy heart tentatively agreed. At best I thought he’d get a 2 year minimum for the Jazz to be their version of Udonis Haslem.
I do recall some RIPs from Gary from the past, including like yesterday that seemed oddly timed. Darn I forgot the name. So much going on. Supposed to be a NBA week off until the announcements. A moratorium.
Who, me? Surely you jest !!
While I don’t agree with the ingles signing, if they believe he’s gonna be a huge addition of the bench mid season then you gotta go for it. They are in nba so while I may not see the draw they clearly do
Playoff Joe will be a huge addition
Is 34 with a torn ACL why giving him 6.5 ???
Going to be 35 in a couple of months !! But I guess the thought is he won’t lose any speed because he didn’t have any in the first place lol. He’s just a great, unselfish, likable, awesome guy to have on your team and in the locker room.
Performs well in the playoffs too
High character players. Love it.
That’s bad because he might not play all year. Good to see Carter get that contract. George Hill should be kicked to the curb because Bud won’t stop playing his washed butt
I was not impressed at all by Hill last year. I hoped that when he came back late in the season the rest would have been beneficial to a nice playoff run. Not only did he play poorly, he got hurt again. And both times he was out Carter played well enough to earn (keep) Hill’s minutes, but like you said Bud insisted on playing Hill.
Matthews is just done IMO, and I honestly don’t know anything about this Ingles. Not sure what to make of those 2 deals at this point.
I really like everything they’ve done since the draft. This might actually be their best team so far, but I thought that previously, and then they randomly got rid of certain pieces, so we’ll see how everyone is used/who stays healthy. They could afford to wait on Ingles too, so that’s a sneaky move, and could be a trade chip this year, or allow them to move someone else
