The Pistons used the Knicks’ desperation to shed salary as a means of trading for Jalen Duren, James Edwards III of The Athletic explains.
Detroit rebuffed the attempts of New York and other teams to trade for Jaden Ivey after the Purdue guard landed at its lottery pick. Pistons GM Troy Weaver then used the Knicks’ need to open up cap space to make a run at Jalen Brunson against them, as New York traded the No. 11 pick to Oklahoma City for a trio of future first-rounders. A three-team agreement among New York, Detroit and Charlotte was then engineered involving the No. 13 pick, where Duren dropped.
Detroit was content to take on Kemba Walker‘s contract, which it will buy out, according to Edwards. It was a best-case scenario for the Pistons to land Ivey and Duran but they’ll still be big players in free agency, though not necessarily for Deandre Ayton or another big name on the market. They may instead add multiple veteran pieces.
We have more from the Central Division:
- Ivey said he’s eager to show that he has a mid-range game and can be a defensive force, two of the knocks on him going into the draft. Those were issues talked about in conversations with Weaver and coach Dwane Casey prior to the draft, Edwards writes in a separate story. “They talked about winning, and that’s what I want to do,” Ivey said. “We talked about setting a defensive presence when I get there and bringing back winning to Detroit. (Weaver) challenged me to be a great defender. I want to do that.”
- The Bucks selected G League Ignite wing MarJon Beauchamp at No. 24 and GM Jon Horst believes that Beauchamp can make an impact with his defensive tenacity, Eric Nehm of The Athletic writes. “Length, athleticism, I think he’s got a grittiness and a toughness to him,” Horst said. “He’s going to have to work on his strength like any young player. … One thing about the G League is it’s a bunch of fast, quick, athletic guys, and I think he really held his own.”
- Wing Ochai Agbaji, chosen with the No. 14 pick, gives the Cavaliers another quality offensive option, coach J.B. Bickerstaff told The Athletic’s Kelsey Russo and other media members. “I thought he could be a weapon. He’s got a skill that no matter where you are in the NBA, you need it,” Bickerstaff said. “He has the ability to put the ball in the basket, and it’s not just the ability to stand in a spot and make a shot.”
I’m interested to see what Detroit has in mind for free agency. They have a boat load of cash to operate with, but are thin at the forward spot, aside from Saddiq Bey. There’s not any impact players at SF/PF in free agency … so maybe they try and go after one or both of the Martin boys (both RFA), Kyle Anderson or Marvin Bagley. It’d be fun for them to dangle a max offer to Bradley Beal and use he, Cunningham and Ivey as a three guard lineup.
Perhaps Detroit ends up going the OKC route this year and uses significant cap to absorb other teams’ expiring contracts in exchange for draft capital.
I would guess we will just take on expiring contracts and get a lot of 2023 capital, I’ve heard it’s a super strong draft class
The Martin twins would be great. Miles Bridges would be even BETTER. I think they’ll just end up taking on expiring contracts and draft picks.
Sign and overpay any restricted FA then trade for Ayton in January
Make playoffs 2024
Presti bent over Leon Rose & Got Ousmanne Dieng who is a huge 6 8 wing who can defend shoot 3 & pass & run pnr. Prob 1 of highest upsides in draft. This is a Top 10 Pick (11) that NYKs traded for Protrcted 18, And 2x Protected 14s.
They then traded Den 14, & 4x 2nd Rd Picks to get Duren. After Presti was done, Troy Weaver Railroaded Leon Rose.. CHOO CHOO!! CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA! CHOO CHOO! LITERALLY & FIGURATIVELY..
KNICKS GAVE UP 4X 2NDS & 1X OF THE 1STS THEY JUST GOT TO GET OFF A LOUSY 9MIL TO MOVE KEMBA, MIND YOU A GUY LEON ROSE LAST FA YR GAVE 2YR 18MIL GUARANTEED…
KNICKS GAVE UP A 1ST & 4X 2NDS TO GET OFF 9 MIL TO MOVE KEMBA WALKER, WHO I REPEAT LEON ROSE GAVE 2YR 18MIL LASY YEAR AT FA
.
THEN KNICKS DONT EVEN GET A PROSPECT… NO HOPE…
LITERALLY KNICKS APPARENTLY ARENT DONE… THERE NOW TRYING TO TRADE CAM REDDISH & WILLING TO GIVE UP 1ST RD PICKS THEY JUST ACQUIRED WHICH ARE TOP 18 & TOP 14 PROTECTED. HELL THEY MAY NOT CONVEY FOR 4 YRS IF AT ALL. IF THEY DO CONVEY THEY WILL BE MID LATE WST RD PICKS BC THERE ALL HIGHLY PROTECTED. NYKS ALSO GOTBMIL 2025 1ST WHICH RBEN HAS TOP 4 PROTECTION & GIANNIS WILL STILL BE IN HIS PRIME IN 3YRS. LATE 20S PICK..
SO POOR KNICKS FANS OMG… THEY LITERALLY GO FROM THINKING THEY ARE GETTING JADEN IVEY, AND HAD 2X CHANCES W SAC & DET TO TRADE UP TO GET HIM..
AND THEN THEY LITERALLY PASS ON A TOP 10 PICK & ROOKIE PRICED DEAL & TRADE 4X 2NDS &1ST RD PICKS TO MOVE KEMBA 9MIL.
AND WILLING TO ATTACH MORE 1STS TO MOVE $$ & THE STAR THEY ARE TARGETING IS Jalen brunson..
Who father works for Knicks & Leon Rose was his agent. Now roses son is his agent. So seems like Rose trying to get brunson way overpaid.
Dal Cuban said deal would be done for around 85mil to 88mil.
Knicks going to offer this guy over 100mil at over 25mil per yr.
It’s a fkn huge mistake bc he’s not a Star. He’s a role player. He’s way over priced at 25mil ++.
He got hot & had good series when Luka hurt buy he’s a 6th man role player. Like a Derek Fisher type.
He’s not elite at anything.. he’s not a 3 pt shooter. Also it’s about fit.
Dal plays spread off w 4x other guys behind arc giving Jalen chance to drive 1 v 1.
Also Defenses were caught off guard & didn’t prep for him & have strategy.
When Def game planned he had gms where he would just disappear.
Like Kemba, Knicks will be offerring multiple 1sts to get off this albatross of a contract in 2 yrs time. U heard it hear first.
Think how spread Dal is with shooters. Esp w 2nd Unit Jalen ran. His #s inflated going against 2nd Unit & then he had a good series but Defs weren’t focused on him. They will be in nyk.
In nyk no spread off. You got Randle & Robinson clogging paint & he will kick out to Fournier for a brick.
4x 2nds & 1st & Nyks couldn’t even get off Fournier deal.. which many gms say is worst starting sg in the gm & one of worst deals in bball.
Knicks are idiots. They should have taken:
Ousmanne Dieng
Mark Williams
Jalen Duren
Aj Griffin
Jalen Williams
Or traded back & taken
Baldwin Jr
Dalen Terry
TyTy Washington
Malaki Branham
On a Rookie Deal…
Instead they trading assets & think they are a team ready to build thru FA..
You build thru draft not FA. Knicks are nowhere near ready to target FAs to win.
Watch Knicks fan. Cam Reddish is next prob. Knicks gave up a 1st rd pick to get him. Now will trade a 1st rd pick to move him.
Knicks Leon Rose needs fired…
Idiots…
This was a journey & a half of a read, but some solid points in there.
Jalen benefited from an offense where the floor was spread, without ball stoppers like Julius or RJ. In the Knicks offense, if Jalen somehow finds his way thru the clutter to get to the rim and needs to kick out, his shooters are RJ, Julius, Cam/?(can you play Grimes & Jalen in the same unit?)
The point about not being ready to supplement thru FA is valid too. I use the word supplement because unless you’re pulling what MIA did in 2011 to create the Heatles – FA is usually the last step for true contention, not the entirety of the strategy.
Sixers need to be all over that Kemba buyout. 18-22mpg and some spot starts where he plays 25-30.
That and pick up Delon Wright. Guards are Maxey, Harden, Melton, Wright, Springer. Then focus on a starting and backup SF.
Shake and Joe > filler for a trade involving Korkmaz and Thybulle.
Detroit is building a nice squad. Idk if Ayton is the way to go with their cap space tho. Would probably be a wiser move to go after a wing player like Bridges who is the best available wing over the next 3 years of FA based on age and level of play. Ayton is a good double double guy, but I mean you can develop an Ayton if we’re being honest like you can get a poor man’s Ayton. He doesn’t spread the court he’s more traditional big man you may not get 18 and 10 but if you get an efficient 12-8 that shoots >70% from FT and blocks shots you’re good. So like Myles Turner in FA.
Kemba is going to the Clippers or Lakers where the expectations of him are very low and he can possibly over-deliver. Another great spot would be Dallas.
Clippers and Lakers are great shouts. That or a return to the Hornets. Run the bench and help Melo
Don’t use up the cap space just to use it, should be smart
Kemba will be a clipper. John Wall will be a laker. He will be bought out after FA period is over.
If the Pistons don’t go after Bridges, call up Charlotte to see how bad they want to get rid of Gordon so they can resign Bridges. Maybe a first and second-round pick. Gordon is a free agent at the end of the year so that they can try again next year. Another year of growth, another lottery pick (more than likely), and maybe a star free agent away from chasing down a 5-8 playoff spot.
Jalen Brunson?
that would be hilarious.
Pistons should make up for losing Grant, unless they enjoy having a high pick.
Knicks won the draft
World Wide Wes and Leon Rose, power brokers at large.
More like Prestige Worldwide.
I do not understand what the Knucks did in this Draft. The only way this would have been a good idea were if these first round picks were unprotected. Did they give up 5 picks for the 13 pick and trade it for a 2025 Bucks pick? Didn’t get a player they could use, didn’t get a single unprotected pick and gave up 3 firsts and 4 seconds, are they working for the other teams or just morons?
The Knicks are a clown show who ain’t relevant to anyone except the barely-breathing NYC tabloids.
Knicks traded away:
-2022 1st rounder (11th overall)
-four 2nds (borderline worthless)
-Kemba Walker
Knicks received:
-Wizards 2023 protected 1st
-Pistons 2023 protected 1st
-Bucks 2025 1st (only top 4 protected)
-$9 million cap space
I think you’re placing way too much value on the 2nd rounders. They have very little value except as trade filler. Teams pass these things back and forth like nothing. In every draft, only a handful of 2nd rounders make any impact at all. Think of it this way: if Team A has the 10th overall pick in the draft and Team B offers them 10 2nd rounders for it, Team A says ‘no’ 100 times out of 100.
With the protections, a good estimate is that this trade boils down to the Knicks receiving three 1sts that land around #15-25 between 2023-2026 in exchange for the #11 overall pick in 2022. It’s an OK deal, probably something like a B-/C+ grade. The negative reactions to their moves are super overblown, imo.
Thank you for taking the time to further clarify and I understand your take but this team was out of the playoffs last season so why not take advantage of the capital they have to make the team better now? OK trade for a few protected future first rounders but at least get something now to improve the team, look at the Pelicans and what they did do you think they, or any other team for the matter, would make these moves? To me it shows that Management does not know what they are doing and that’s the concern because how will things get better with this kick the can down the road FO? Lost!
You left out the other 2022 1 st round #13 pick they gave away to Charity? Unreal, it’s just lame overblown or not or maybe I’m missing something or there’s a related move coming.
Lastly, although second round picks are no locks, let’s not forget that Brunson, who I guess someone in the Knucks FO lives for if he is what all these moves are about, was a Second Round pick.
Knucks. I am just trying to figure out what in the world they did trading 2 unprotected 22 1st Rd picks and 4 second rounders for 2 heavily protected 2023 1 Rd picks and a 25 Bucks 1 Rd pic. I mean come on, the team sucked last year you idiots at least get a Thunder 1st or second Rd 2022 pick or a player or 2 they can use I’m just dumbfounded Leon Rose is no good as a GM take your Worldwide and go back to CAA please!
