What would it take for teams without cap room to ink Zach LaVine and engineer a sign-and-trade? Evan Sidery of Basketball News takes a look at several potential trades in which LaVine winds up with the Heat, Hawks or Mavericks. In the Hawks’ case, Sidery speculates that a three-way deal in which the Bulls receive Kevin Huerter and Onyeka Okongwu and the Pacers get Danilo Gallinari and a 2023 first-round pick from the Hawks might work.
We have more on the Central Division:
- The Pacers will work out six draft prospects on Monday, Scott Agness of Fieldhouse Files tweets. That group includes Teddy Allen (New Mexico State), Terrell Brown Jr. (Washington), Max Christie (Michigan State), Ryan Rollins (Toledo), Peyton Watson (UCLA) and Kok Yat (Overtime Elite).
- Would the Pistons move off the No. 5 spot in the lottery for three first-round selections? Keith Langlois of Pistons.com believes if the Spurs offered the No. 9, 20 and 25 picks, Detroit might go along with it. The draft is deep enough that adding three first-rounders would bring more value that the No. 5 pick alone, in Langlois’ assessment.
- The Bucks may have as many as five roster holes to fill and The Athletic’s Eric Nehm takes a comprehensive look at how they’ll approach the offseason and what kinds of free agents they might target.
Zero chance they get Onyeka Okongwu for Zach. I wouldn’t give up Onyeka for Zach straight up lol it would be ridiculous to give up an extra 1st plus a starting 2guard for him. I definitely see why Chicago would want Onyeka but they’re dreaming lol
Onyeka is some garbage player. Zach is an all-star.
We talking about the same Okongwu?
Wouldn’t give up okongwu for lavine straight up is one of the most asinine things I’ve ever read on this site, that trade in the article is nowhere near realistic either, bulls would want picks for lavine to replenish the ones they’ve given up for demar and Lonzo
You don’t watch basketball. Just say that.
When you look at PER you need to understand that it’s misleading when talking about 15-20 mpg players.
Also centers score well higher, maybe 5 points. The formula dates back to when centers mattered more. But it’s fine for comparison between the same position and mpg status.
I think the Piston should go for picks. They have judged Talent well.
The article doesn’t mention that the Pistons can also sign Lavine without a sign and trade. Cade and Lavine would be a strong backcourt. As far as the draft, based on mock drafts, they can draft Murray at 5 and Sharpe at 7 (trade with Portland). Starting line-up:
Cade
Lavine
Bey
Murray
Stewart
With Bagley, Diallo, and Sharpe off the bench. It’s a young squad, but they would be athletic and dynamic.
He’s not going to Detroit.
I’m sure he called to tell you that. Smh!
No, it’s because the Bulls can pay him more money than any team and they have an actual competitive roster, right now. Not in maybe a few years.
You can’t just say trade with Portland for 7 and we get this guy. You have to give away assets in a trade
In this case, you can. Portland’s trade exception would allow a straight-up trade for the 7th pick.
Pistons won’t be good for a while. He isn’t taking more more for a much much worse city, much worse basketball situation, and absolutely no chance of competing just cause that makes you happy dude.
The Bulls are not good enough with that roster to do anything worthwhile. It isn’t a championship level roster. It just isn’t.
In a weird spot. I wouldn’t want to give Lavine a max 212.5 mil for 5 years. Over 40 a year for Lavine? I don’t see that team being good enough, but I wouldn’t want to lose him for nothing either.
Murray who? This isn’t a magic show. You can’t wave a wand and another pick appears. Maybe you were having a convo on another site and it was explained there.
Portland’s trade exception is for Portland to use.
Who keeps proposing these horrible one sided trades for Lavine? Lol. Let me guess, Lakers get him for THT and a 2nd rounder? Lol. Stop it. It’s embarrassing
Bulls would be fools to take that offer. WTF is Evan Sidery ?? He must think trades happen by matching salaries. Someone should educate the man.
Bulls are not letting Zach go unless he wants to. So let’s stop with all the LaVine smoke.
You know what’s better than Spurs 3 picks.
Mitch (a starting center)
Quickley (a backup PG)
#11 pick = a scoring wing (Agbaji)
He’s an UFA!! If he signs with a team with cap space, they have no choice. What are you talking about?
He knows what he’s talking about, You don’t. Lavine has made it clear he wants to be paid. Sure he can SIGN with anybody, but the MOST they can offer him like 157 million. Where the BULLS can pay him 213 million. He’s made it clear he’s not taking an under market deal. Hope that explains it. You don’t seem to get it. He’s not leaving 50 million dollars on the table.
Actually, you don’t get it, or at least don’t know the current CBA. The greater amount that CHI can pay ZL directly, is NOT available to LaVine in a S&T. This should be clear from everything written on the topic. Why not read the CBA before pretending to know what’s in it? It’s not in Greek.
I’d explain it again but it’s hopeless. Sign and trade means exactly what it implies. He signs with the Bulls and THEN they trade him. Wake up.
In fact, I just went outside and explained it to the tree in my front yard. The tree got it.
That’s the problem. Stop talking to the tree, it doesn’t know anything more than you. Read the CBA. Better yet, have someone read it to you. Slowly. Or ask someone who knows a little about the NBA, if any such person will converse with you.
i am groot.
Yeah I haven’t read it but I thought the player couldn’t be traded for 6 months after a new UFA deal?
I think the sign and trade agreements are for restricted FA, because technically Chicago would own his rights?
There just aren’t teams with cap
He’s saying the Bulls want to keep him. He’s never said he wants go anywhere else and these puff pieces are all smoke, no fire.
Is ZL interested in going to ATL? I know there have been selling teams in recent years that have acted as if they are the player’s agent, but, for the most part, this is ZL’s choice (not CHI’s or ATL’s). Here, there’s also the issue of ATL’s ability to take a S&T player with the resulting hard cap. Also, NO draft picks in the 2022 draft can be used in a S&T for ZL.
If ZL, as a UFA, wants to go to ATL, and they can take him with the hard cap, then CHI (unless they hire Danny Ainge in the interim) will almost certainly accommodate a S&T as long as they don’t have to take back any long term $$ and get a couple of a protected 1st rounders. It wouldn’t be the same package they could get for ZL if he were under contract. It’s a toll and there is some logic and some custom in it. Players can be substituted for the picks, but there’s no real reason to argue over value. If CHI doesn’t want ATL’s players or their contracts, then ATL would have to unload a contract or two to a third team, and either get or give other assets in the process, and give expiring deals and the picks to CHI. Point is, it’s doable if ZL wants to go to ATL, and ATL wants ZL badly enough.
Lol these articles are getting ridiculous.
Dude is a UFA. Why would Miami trade Herro for Lavine. Dumbest thing I’ve seen. I get some teams would need to trade assets to fit under the cap, if they want to sign Lavine to the max. But really, Herro!?!!
DXC is correct to point out that if LaVine says “I want to go to (insert team)” it’s more or less a done deal, even if the return isn’t gargantuan for CHI
But I’d like to look at the reverse for a second – is LaVine a great deal on the max for MIA, ATL, or DAL?
Miami I can see, as they’re all in with Jimmy right now. But for the Hawks and Mavs?
Guys turn 30 quickly in the NBA; LaVine is 27, coming off a knee surgery, and has been a consistently poor defender even with prime age, elite athleticism. Would I want to pair him w/ my 23 year franchise player, who is also a minus on defense?
That seems like an iffy proposition to me if I’m Dallas or Atlanta
Totally hear ya BS69
Last 3 champions – Lakers had Caruso and KCP playing nice D up top
Mil- Jrue
Bos (soon) – Smart
This is where the game is played and won nowadays. I don’t see Luka/Trae w ZL a great fit as well
I’m not sure ZL is a great deal on max for anyone. But, the NBA player market is complex one. Any 27 year old All Star talent that becomes available as UFA is going to get multiple max offers, unless there’s an injury or similar issue. Those guys just don’t become available any longer. Best available UFAs last season: DDR and Lowry, older guys. Not much different the year before. Or this year, outside of LaVine, and maybe Brunson.
That said:
MIA – I’d be shocked if they’re interested other than in a deal around Lowry, which would also require (for them) creatively protected or unprotected picks. They don’t have expiring deals, or all their own picks.
DAL – I can see them interested only if Brunson wants to leave, or if (like MIA) they’re looking to do it with guys they want to jettison (THJ for one) in any event. They don’t have the expiring deals, or all their own picks, either.
ATL – I can see them being very interested. I’m having a problem seeing ZL being interested in them. ATL has the assets to do it. All their own picks plus 1. No large expiring deals, but reasonably tradable deals. Their issue is hard cap, i.e., who to shed to get there.
Occam’s razor: He’s headed back to CHI. If not, it will be a losing team, POR or SAS. I can’t see DET.
I’d imagine Riley would be intrigued at the prospect of flipping Lowry and some combination of non-Herro assets for LaVine – Miami probably needs another guy other than Butler who can consistently make his own offense at a high level (assuming Bam’s passivity persists). Lowry’s deal is short enough I could see Chicago capitulating if ZL pressed the issue and Pat mortgaged some future assets.
I understand why Atlanta has the interest in theory – if Miami needs another creator than Atlanta needs 3. I just think they’d be locking into mediocrity with a LaVine-Trae core. On the other hand if they think they’d be able to flip ZL down the road it’s a prettier alternative to running it back with the same core.
I don’t think CHI would even want Lowry’s salary. Pains me to say he’s one of my favorite players of this entire century
Feels like just yesterday us fantasy hoopers were getting online petitions for Houston to kill Aaron Brooks minutes for Lowry. See LaVine a good fit in Mia tho, tho I don’t see the path
Yea Im just not feeling ATl w Trae Lavine combo . Don’t like the pairing, they might kill a little of each others value as well w as much 1 v 1 as they play on offence
**And agreed on DXC first sentence – I don’t even see him worth 4/157 in all honesty unless there’s some non-guaranteed language involved tied to games played etc
