The Cavaliers are trying to re-sign Collin Sexton, but their first offer was short of what he’s hoping for, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
The free agent guard wants a new deal that averages about $20MM per year, sources tell Fischer, but Cleveland’s early offer in extension talks was below that number. Fischer says it was similar to Jordan Clarkson‘s “three-year, $51MM” deal, but Clarkson’s contract is actually worth $52MM over four years, so it’s unclear which of those figures was closer to Cleveland’s initial offer.
Sexton missed most of last season with a torn meniscus in his left knee. He was recently cleared for full basketball activities and should be ready for training camp.
There’s more on Eastern Conference free agents, all from Fischer:
- Marvin Bagley III, who was acquired at the trade deadline, is expected to re-sign with the Pistons for more than $10MM per year. Fischer compares the expected deal to what the Hornets gave Kelly Oubre, which was two seasons at $24.6MM with a partial guarantee on the second year.
- Fischer confirms a report that Nic Claxton will likely remain with the Nets, probably for an amount in the neighborhood of the full MLE.
- The Bulls and Magic could be among the suitors for center Isaiah Hartenstein now that the Clippers are expected to give their full taxpayer MLE to John Wall. Chicago has been linked to several centers, but Fischer hears that the team would prefer not to use its entire non-taxpayer MLE of $10.1MM, so Hartenstein may be a lower-cost option. Rumors have emerged that Orlando may have interest in Hartenstein, but Fischer adds that he could also decide to remain in L.A. on a cheaper deal and hope to cash in later.
- The Pacers are considering an offer for Hornets forward Miles Bridges, but Fischer says it’s not clear if Indiana is ready to hand out such a large contract. Fischer adds that the Grizzlies have been considered a “sleeper candidate” due to the presence of Jaren Jackson Jr., his former college teammate, but sources tell Fischer that Memphis isn’t expected to pursue Bridges.
I predicted Wall contract MLE a few times here.
the Clippers are expected to give their full taxpayer MLE to John Wall.

Silly is a time traveler and a soothsayer
Cavs and Sexton will eventually come to a deal that works for both sides. He wants to play in Cleveland and we want him back too. His talent for scoring is exactly what Cleveland was lacking last season. While yes our shooting guard position is loaded at the moment I can’t imagine LeVert staying with the team much longer.
marvin bagley is not good
Not sure on the Sexton situation. I rate him, his offence is top level, before his injury he would have been the first on that team to make AS. But I’m not sure he pairs well with garland. Which is why he blew up while Sexton was out.
If I’m Cle I go all in on Garland, Allen and Mobley and give sexton a chance on another team. They’re future contenders without him and can use the space for good role players, if Sexton blows up like I think he will it won’t be the biggest regret looking at how good Garland is becoming.
@JW91
He’s their best scorer. He’s they’re only true SG. I don’t see why it couldn’t work. I mean, not to compare the teams but GSW manages to let 4 scorers get significant touches throughout a game. Shouldn’t be hard. Add to the fact that Garland has chronic back issues. Can we really give away talent/depth like that?
I get what you’re saying and that is why I pegged him as their best player before his injury. But I just don’t think he and Garland can coexist. It can’t be coincidence he blew up while he was out injured.
Why tinker with the harmony of what can be a true contender for years to come? There is such a thing as too much offence. No argument he’s good, as are their other core of Garland, Mobley and Allen(he maybe a better scorer). But there comes a point when frictions will be caused and what looks like a happy talented team could lead to a hostile locker room. I’d kill to have 4 young possible stars but I’d be the first to admit it can’t last. This is a sport of 2-3 stars with role players unless one is willing to step back and let the others lead it won’t work.
I worry it’ll be like OKC with Harden, was good but coexistence wasn’t going to work with Russ KD etc long term and he left and blew up. Which it could be for Sexton. But if I’m any of those players I’d rather have 3 to share the love with MAX deffo not 4.
@JW91
Is is really smart to anticipate a problem? I know they have the same agent and your EXPECT them to say the right things but Garland has voiced he wants to keep playing with Sexton.
But speaking to the time they played together this last year. Sexton only played in 11 games. In those 11 games Garland missed games 2 and 3. Why? Back soreness which continues to pop up a few times in his career. But during the 9 games with both on the floor he averaged about 8 assists per game and they were 6-3. True, short sample size? But why rush to conclusions? Resign him and after seeing a larger sample size try and fix and if a trade needs to be made I’m sure he’ll still have a strong market so long as he’s recovered from his knee injury.
I can’t argue with your logic, from my point of view and the games I’ve watched when both play, pre 21/22 season, They looked a little incompatible, they may like each other and be willing to play together but that will only go so far.
I see the same issue going forward with Porter Jr and Green in Houston, Suggs and Cole in ORL and SGA &Giddey for OKC, or even what was happening in Sac with Fox and Haliburton. It’s difficult for both to coexist and both will expect to dominate the ball. There will come a time a choice will have to be made. I know he’s coming off injury but I still see him having value in a S&T this FA.
Just depends how high Cle rate him as I’m sure another team will offer an over pay. I actually prefer him to Brunson who looks to be getting some bags from NY. So I can see someone offering a strong offer and I’m not sure Cleveland would match, or really need to.
There’s a reason why Sexton hasn’t been traded. Even before his injury, no one wanted to give up premium assets. He seems like a loose cannon. Could have some coachability issues. It might actually be easier to trade Sexton once he is paid for salary matching purposes.
@isolated
Only negatives ever voiced about him was his defensive IQ and being a shoot m g.j; ; first PG. Other than that everything else has been positive
Are we still taking about Sexton?! Only young that sounds like what you’re saying while on Cavs recently was KPJ while he was there. You could be mixing their stories up?
Sexton is no loose cannon… maybe the opposite, whatever that is.
He is fast and was supposed to cover the court like he was shot from a cannon, maybe that was what you heard.
No, he’s just short is all, and second best short on the Cavs.
Pacers going younger with the rebuild.
Trade Myles Turner for DeAndre Ayton via sign and trade.
Skill level wise both players are about the same, but with completely different styles. Turner is locked in at a cheaper rate which the Suns want but Ayton is young Lee and offers more potential which is what the Pacers want. Overall it makes sense for both sides.
Halliburton and Ayton as your new foundation pieces and then you have née young guys to build around them with
Much rather see the Bulls give Bamba the full MLE of 10.1 than see them go after Hartenstein. They’re not even close.
Bamba will get more than the MLE. Some team will pony up 15-17 mill per year for him. Especially since hes over 7ft, can rebound, block shots, makes some plays and hit 3 balls.
If the Knicks were smart, lol, which we know theyre not, hence why they want to pay Brunson north of 25 mill per year, they’d let Mitchell go and sign Bamba. Hes an instant upgrade at the 5.
