The Spurs and Hawks continue to discuss a possible trade that would send All-Star guard Dejounte Murray to Atlanta, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report (Twitter link).
Fischer reported prior to last week’s draft that San Antonio and Atlanta were talking about Murray, and it appears those conversations didn’t end when the draft did.
Fischer’s initial reporting suggested that the two teams were discussing a package that would include John Collins, but Zach Klein of WSB-TV in Atlanta tweets that some sources around the NBA believe the Hawks are working on a Murray deal that would instead involve Danilo Gallinari and multiple first-round picks. Fischer adds (via Twitter) that he has heard those same whispers.
While Collins is under contract for four more seasons at a rate of $25MM annually, Gallinari is on a partially guaranteed expiring contract and will be off the books after the 2022/23 season. If the Spurs are looking more toward the future than the present, they may value cap flexibility and the opportunity to load up on draft picks more than a win-now player like Collins.
For what it’s worth, a package that doesn’t involve Collins and is heavy on draft picks would line up more with the “Jrue Holiday-like” return Fischer said last week that the Spurs were seeking. The Pelicans received three first-round picks and a pair of first-round pick swaps from Milwaukee in that Holiday deal.
I dont get why the Spurs would move Murray right now. They have a lot of guards, but besides Tre Jones, none of them defends, unless you count Richardson/Langford
I guess I could see it though, if they get Gallinari plus several picks. He gives them a fit, even though they also have McDermott, and they could potentially figure out their guard rotation for this coming hear…I just think they could do better if they were moving Murray, and also want to see him in a lineup with shooting, and Sochan at the 5
Murray’s contract only had 2 years left, an Spurs will take longer than that to be good. That’s why Spurs trade Murray now.
Correct. Pops and Team don’t want to pay max dollars while the team is building.
I dont see them being that far away
More likely, Murray is not seen as a championship-driver. IDK myself but I would not be sure he was yet.
Brunson may be moreso.
Not sure what the San Antonio plan is. Is Murray considered too old for their rebuild timeline, or are they trying to do him a solid, trading him to a team that is ready now? Or is it just that they’re guard heavy and need an impact big?
If it’s a trade for Gallo who starts at point? Primo?
Starting lineup minus Murray? Jones, Primo, Vassell, Johnson, Poetl?
He’s 25, and clearly a valuable player. I can’t imagine why the Spurs don’t think he fits with whatever their plan is.
I could see Ayton playing with Murray and you build around that. Find another way of getting Collins.
They’re asking for the moon and sun for him, so it seems like they’re fine keeping him if they can’t get a kings ransom. Or they don’t want to shell out the max for a player right now, since he will be a free agent soon.
Never hurts to ask around to see if someone will bite.
John Collins + Trae Young + Dejounte Murray = #DeJohnTrae… this is happening guys. Go ahead & prepare yourselves mentally
I’ll bet a nice sum of money JC is not on this Hawks team before the end of July.
I hope you’re wrong but you might be right. Who you think we’ll get for him?
Not sure of specifics, but if Gallo and picks go to SA in any deal, Hawks should try to recoup a few of those picks in any deal for JC. Boston might be an option.
Only way we should trade John to Boston is if we’re getting Jaylen back
I will absolutely love to see that trio, but with all those rumblings about Collins being move/he wanting out, can’t see this happening.
Not too keen on sometimes these tweet sources being 3days or a week old.
One here is recent. The other 3 days old.
One article last week was a week old tweet.
Because then, this article can he referenced in a few days to another website. And everyone is just rehashing or building up the same old news story or reverifying it.
Now get off my lawn.
Its better than nothing i agree.
I just wish often it was more timely.
I have said more or less, Spurs will not take an ATL player for Dejounte, but I also said Spurs were a landing spot for Irving maybe Durant.
Well… these movements may be related, one leading to the other.
The Hawks picks are for Nets for Irving & Durant, and Spurs have a 5-year deal for Irving he would accept.
It’s not over a 50% chance but I bet it is likely the Spurs & Nets are working on it in case it does work and gets approvals from all the parties. ATL is happy to facilitate and give up 4 firsts and some salary if they get Dejounte. Nets boss Chai is tired of talk without work, maybe fleecing.
Straight nonsense.
And that’s putting it lightly.
You’re going by Popovich’s imagined reputation probably, as some grumpy old man who would not put up with some people. He will fight that. I will too, in comment boxes. But he would by getting Irving. And he wants in the playoffs & finals.
Anyone think Pop is trying to create a concept team with no personal issues on hand?
Irving has been Irving for years, and they OKd each other in 2017.
Going to the spurs Gallo , Jalen Johnson And 2 first round picks 2023 and 2024 ( unprotected )
Bleacher Report IS TRASH.
just because ATL calls to ask about DJ doesn’t mean SAS wants to trade him.
It feels like ATL is leaking that they called to Bleacher Report to poison the relationship between Murray and the Spurs
Would of love to have Murray over Brunson. It’s why Brunson can’t be a sign n trade
