The Heat are willing to give impending free agent P.J. Tucker a guaranteed three-year deal but don’t want to invest their full mid-level exception on the veteran forward, Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.
Using the full mid-level ($10.3MM) would push Miami into a hard cap situation, which would seriously curtail its ability to make other moves. The Heat instead plan to offer Tucker the maximum allowable three years using the Non-Bird exception. The contract would include a starting salary of $8.4MM and would be worth about $26.5MM in total.
Tucker is declining his $7.35MM option in order to enter unrestricted free agency. The Sixers have emerged as the frontrunners for Tucker, reportedly ready to offer him a three-year contract worth $27MM with incentives that could increase the value to $30MM.
If the non-taxpayer mid-level exception is used on Tucker, the Heat would only be able to offer restricted free agent Caleb Martin or any outside free agent their $4.1MM bi-annual exception or a minimum-salary deal, Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald notes.
Not bad at all for Tucker. Now he can buy ALL the cool shoes in the world for his collection..
@Daniel
I think he might have them all. I hope he stays in Miami. More chances to try and pry some of those grails from him.
Lmao Morey is so desperate its really cringe actually. Anyway, this shouldn’t be much of a decision for PJ. Equal money and equal years, yeah I’m going to Miami over Philly any day of the week, and twice on Sundays.
You can go to Miami twice every day and 3 x’s on Sunday. We didn’t really want you anyway
Says every guy that gets rejected.
PJ clearly prefers teammates Embiid and Harden over Jimmy and Bam. No-brainer.
I bet you he stays in Miami. For less money too.
If he’s smart he will (stay in MIA)
Pj prefers to play with joel emvp the most dominant player in the league the same guy Jimmy buckets apparently prefers also.
yeah this is a terrible idea
You sound upset son…Tuck wants to play with Harden again…Philly showing him the most money…it is simple as that…but keep on hating player…
It’s actually more money in Miami due to the huge difference in taxes.
PJ is already 37 years old.
Hard to fathom a 3-Year contract for him unless the goal is to spread out the expense over a 3-year period.
Also, he is very limited on Offense, just shoots corner 3s. Has no ability to put the ball on the deck and dribble and drive to the hoop.
Pretty expensive Contract for a role playing Defender.
Rarher give that $ to Dipo
Heat have Oladipo’s bird rights, so they can offer him a 1+1 at $14-15 million for him to add more value and get paid next year. Its Caleb Martin, who is up in the air/likely gone
Role players that hit tres and defend win championships my friend.
@Gang
He’s your prototypical 3 and D guy. that’s what they do. play defense and shoot 3’s of which he did at a career high 41%.
Both 76ers and Heat are at the luxury-tax apron
The luxury-tax apron, which is projected to $155.2 million based on Sillivan estimates.
The tax apron is to use sign-and-trade or to use the non-taxpayer MLE
At this moment, 76ers are exceed tax apron.
Tucker is not worth the full MLE… hopefully he takes the non bird rights contract. If not, Miami can sign a TJ Warren or Portis with most of the MLE if not all. Would be a better long term signing imo… they could also trade for a guy like Crowder or another old friend Olynyk.
Personally, I hope we end the off-season with Tucker signing the Non bird rights contract and then to use the MLE to bring in TJ Warren on a 1 year deal (Jimmy approving this of course lol)… Bring back Caleb Martin with the Bi annual exception, Re-sign Oladipo with the minimum contract and trade Robinson, maybe Vincent if needed, plus a pick or two in a S&T for Mo Bamba.
C Adebayo, Bamba, Yurtseven
PF Tucker, Warren, Jovic
SF Butler, Martin
SG Strus, Herro
PG Lowry, Oladipo, Vincent
Leaves two spots for maybe Haslem and another wing player.
What you smoking man?
Nothing. This is a real possibility for Miami
This race to the bottom is awesome. Go ahead and blow your cap on a 37 yr old.
HEAT’s Elisburg is NBA elite when it comes to salary cap gymnastics …… good contracts, bad contracts he has seen and dealt with it all.
Is there even a new race to bottom? Everyone knows about the race that perennial losers/tankers participate in e.g KINGS, THUNDER, PISTONS, etc.
“Race to the bottom” by two of the top 4 seeds in the East? LOL, OK.
I’m a bit on the fence on this one ……… PJ is about the prototypical HEAT player there is – he’s all heart, makes all the winning plays. but he’s slowly breaking down and that contract will probably look ugly a year from now.
The NBA is all about athletic, switchable wings now. It might be better to spend whatever available money on Caleb, Dipo or some other youngish wings.
On the other hand, HEAT are in near-contention, same as about 7-8 other teams. PJ is someone you’d love to have on that roster.
Hell, it’s not even my money, get PJ back to the HEAT now.
If we lose Tucker we will be able to get Warren or Crowder. I’m sure of it. Even thinking Mo Bamba is possible. Younger and way more potential. Give Jovic 2-3 years and I think he will be a starter as well.
Crowder isnt a FA. Warren is a 4, but not really a fit, unless they get another option as well, but even then, I’d rather use Strus in those spots. Heat should have drafted EJ Liddell, and this wouldnt be as tough if a scenario b/c we know he can defend at that position
Whichever team signs him is making a mistake. Too much money for a guy who is no doubt very near to a decline in skill
If it’s similar money like that, that deal is probably actually worth slightly more or at least the same b/c of income taxes…
Pj Tucker was already a priority, as is adding someone in addition to him, but it’s an even bigger deal with 1 of the potential fallback options, Taurean Prince, staying in Minnesota. If the Sixers are able to clear cap, then it doesnt matter, but if not, they could do a sogn and trade for some combination of Thybulle, Paul Reed, Isaiah Joe
Like I said from the beginning, I wish the Heat could keep Caleb Martin, but it’s very unlikely, unless maybe they lose Tucker, which hopefully they dont
So, a few days ago, I put together a list of possible FA targets for the Heat in a couple of different scenarios. Now obviously Taurean Prince is off those lists, but here they are for reference…
Gettable FAs if Heat only lose Caleb Martin and still need to replace Markieef Morris

Prince signed an extension.
Ya I mentioned that…in the first scenario, they would need 1 of the 4s, and 1 of the wing pieces. In the second scenario, they would need 2 of the 4s, 1 of the wings, 1 of the guards, and 1 of the 5s
Why has no one pointed out that 7-8 mill in Florida is worth about 11-12 mill in Pennsylvania? (taxes)
I did…
