The Hornets are set to bring in another one of their head coaching finalists, Mike D’Antoni, for a meeting that will include team owner Michael Jordan, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski (Twitter link).
A previous report, identifying Kenny Atkinson as the frontrunner for Charlotte’s coaching vacancy, indicated that Atkinson would be the first of the team’s candidates to meet with Jordan. According to Wojnarowski, that sit-down is expected to occur on Tuesday, with D’Antoni’s meeting coming later in the week.
Both Atkinson and D’Antoni have already met twice with Hornets management, but Jordan wasn’t involved in those first two rounds, Wojnarowski explains. After conducting their final round of interviews in the coming days with Jordan in attendance, the Hornets are expected to finalize a decision on who will replace James Borrego on the sidelines in Charlotte.
A pair of reports in mid-May stated that D’Antoni was believed to be the favorite for the Hornets’ job, though Marc Stein – who published one of those reports – later said he received some “push-back” on that idea. Subsequently, Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report suggested D’Antoni may be Jordan’s preferred choice, while Stein stated that the team was likely to decide between Atkinson and D’Antoni.
As of Friday, Terry Stotts was also believed to be in the running for the Hornets’ position, but it remains unclear whether he’ll get an opportunity to meet with Jordan.
D’Antoni, Atkinson, and Stotts all have previous head coaching experience, and all three have helped turn lottery teams into playoff clubs. D’Antoni did it in Phoenix and New York, while Atkinson did it in Brooklyn and Stotts did it in Portland.
For the few that truly love the game of basketball I strenuously suggest that you check out as much of this FIBA Americas U18 tournament as possible. It starts today & USA meets Team DR at 6:30. Team USA is stacked even more than usual. Future nba stars up & down the roster including future Tar Heel GG Jackson (50% Giannis, 50% Al Harrington) as well as future Razorback Anthony Black (Shaun Livingston before the injury) & many other talented youngsters… I promise it’s much harder to hate on these guys as pros when you’ve been watching them since age 16,17. Most if not all of thr games are on FIBA’s youtube page… link to zagsblog.com
Thanks. FIBA was always atrocious promoting games; Will check it out.
Error D Antony could destroy Hornets in the same way he did in Houston, a defensive mind coach like former jazz coach is could be the best for the young Hornets.
D’Antoni didn’t destroy the Rockets. Under D’Antoni the Rockets had the most success they’d had since Olajuwon played. If it weren’t for an injury to Chris Paul they very well could of won a championship in the 2017-18 season.
As far as Snyder? I really think he takes a year off then goes from there. There could be some better opportunities for him in a year in Atlanta or San Antonio.
I’d LOVE for Quin Snyder to come coach at Ga Tech. He was really good at Mizzou & obv has strong ACC ties. Hawks already got our guy tho…. the rest I agree with tho, esp Snyder to SAS
Don’t get me wrong, I like McMillan but you know as much as I do that ownership in the NBA can very fickle. Lloyd Pierce is a good example. If and when he gets another shot I think he’ll make a good NBA head coach.
I think San Antonio makes sense for Snyder but then again so did Becky Hammon and so does Tim Duncan. He could go back to the college ranks for the right offer especially if Scheyer doesn’t work out. Snyder’s always been hard to read he may just up and retire.
The Hornets’ biggest issue is poor defense. D’Antoni doesn’t coach defense.
Great the rockets won the title? D Anthony playoff record 29 – 23 with rockets .557 ?? After leave the rockets they record is 37-117 is the last 2 seasons in business that is a disaster , or Iam wrong good luck my friend.
Like DAntoni but not for Charlotte. Atkinson is the best choice for them. They are a young team on the move upwards. Atkinson has a lot to prove. I think they make a good pair.
DAntoni should go help Knicks and Thibs lol.
