Kenny Atkinson could become the Hornets‘ next head coach by the end of the upcoming week, a source tells Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer, though he cautions that the team still hasn’t reached a final decision. A report on Friday identified Atkinson as the frontrunner for the job, and Boone indicates that momentum for him has been building since last month’s draft combine.
Atkinson has been tied up with his duties as an assistant coach for the Warriors, but with three days between Games 2 and 3 of the NBA Finals, he should have time for a face-to-face meeting with team owner Michael Jordan. Boone notes that an in-person session with Jordan was the last step before James Borrego was hired four years ago.
The Hornets are intrigued by Atkinson’s experience, history of developing young players and emphasis on defense, Boone adds. The Finals could last through June 19, which would limit Atkinson’s input into preparations for the June 23 draft. According to Boone, Borrego’s former assistants are working behind the scenes and are waiting to see if they will be part of the new coach’s staff.
There’s more from Charlotte:
- The Hornets welcomed six players today for a pre-draft workout, according to a tweet from the team. On hand were Tennessee’s Kennedy Chandler, Miami’s Kameron McGusty, Providence’s Justin Minaya, Memphis’ Josh Minott, Marquette’s Darryl Morsell and Arkansas’ JD Notae. On Friday, Charlotte hosted St. Bonaventure’s Jalen Adaway, Milwaukee’s Patrick Baldwin Jr., Michigan’s Moussa Diabate, Villanova’s Collin Gillespie, Texas A&M’s Quenton Jackson and Creighton’s Alex O’Connell (Twitter link).
- Duke’s Trevor Keels talked to Boone about the pre-draft process following a workout with the Hornets on Wednesday. Keels is enjoying the chance to meet with interested teams and compete with players he’s never faced before, but he said the experience can be a grind. “I think guys think the pre-draft process is easy,” he said. “You are working every day, keeping your body right. There is only 58 picks and there are hundreds of guys trying to hear their name called and get an opportunity. So you’ve got to work every day.”
- The Hornets would get $215MM in upgrades to the Spectrum Center along with a new $60MM practice facility in a proposal being considered by the city of Charlotte, per Genna Contino of The Charlotte Observer. The deal would require the team to extend its lease with the city an additional 15 years through 2045.
Atkinson is the right choice MJ…….
“Just do it”
Hornets have the 13th and 15th picks. They also have a big need at center. They have Kai Jones sitting. Who is still very young and has upside potential. The big move for them can be signing Mitch. A Defense Center. Or swing for the fences and go get Ayton. Either one makes them better and formidable imo.
Or they could draft Williams. He will be at least as good as Mitch.
Williams and Eason would be a solid draft imo. Provides need and depth.
Has there ever been a public hs basketball team better than the 2016 Chino Hills Huskies? 82 Dunbar maybe?

I highly doubt East Anchorage or any Alaska hs ever had a team that could beat Lonzo’s Chino Hills team or the 82/83 Dunbar teams. Who was on those other teams? 07 seems a bit early for Kyrie & MKG at St. Patrick’s
Trajan Langdon ring a bell? He started at PG for East Anchorage
Lol ok do top6 nba draft picks Onyeka Okongwu, Lonzo & LaMelo Ball ring a bell? They ran thru the state of Cali. I continue to highly doubt they would’ve stood a chance vs Chino Hills
Yeah it’s only best records ever. Still there though. I got you
But I’d say any team would have a hard time beating Alcindor and his HS team.
Alcindor began his record-breaking basketball accomplishments when he was in high school, where he led coach Jack Donohue’s Power Memorial Academy team to three straight New York City Catholic championships, a 71–game winning streak, and a 79–2 overall record.
1967-69 Columbus (Ohio) East High School… look them up.
70-1 in 3 years.
Undefeated the second and third years with two (big school) State Championships.
ED RATLEFF: Two-time 1st Team All-American at Long Beach St. under Tarkanian. Two-time league POY.
Starter on the ‘72 Olympic Team that got robbed in Munich. Was the 6th pick in the 1973 NBA Draft.
BO LAMAR: 3 time college All-American and Two-time 1st Team All-American at SW Louisiana (now UL-Lafayette). League POY. Averaged 31 ppg in college. Led nation in scoring in 1972 (runner-up in ‘70 to that Maravich guy). 1st Pick overall in the ‘73 ABA Draft and 3rd round pick in the NBA Draft.
NICK CONNER: 6’6 center went on to start for Illinois all 3 “varsity eligible” seasons and is ranked 43 (of Top 50) player in Illini history. All-Big Ten pick and 10th round draft pick of the Buffalo Braves (now the LA Clippers).
All of their colleges were eventually put on probation due to their recruitment of the 3 players.
The two other starters also played Division I college ball.
Ratleff was a good player. Better college player. But who is going to guard Alcindor. Even today there is no one who is as good. Or as advanced Big in HS. Alcindor would dominate todays HS best.
An actually great HS team, or having the best group of former NBA players?
Among the teams I actually saw play, I would vote Dunbar (1982) the best among public schools. St. Anthony’s (1989) would be the best among Catholic schools. St. Patrick’s (1996) was likely the most talented team I saw in the NY Metro area, but like some of the teams who’s accomplishment was housing NBA talent, I wouldn’t give them much chance in a best of 3 against the two teams above.
I can’t help it if you missed the lead in…
70-1 in 3 years and 2 state championships as a high school team.
What part of that did you miss?
The listing of their players was merely to show what kind of talent was on the team.
That East HS team could’ve played with anyone in any era.
@jump shot – LOL. I was responding to the original post by @Sankara. I hadn’t even read your post when I wrote mine. I certainly have no view (one way or the other) on a team from 1960’s I never saw play. Hope that eases your outrage.
DXC… Yes, and I realized that AFTER it was too late for me to amend my comment. It came to my email as that you responded to me, but it was too late when I realized you were actually responding to the original comment. My bad.
IPlease accept my apology for responding in haste.
Go Warriors!
No worries. These long threads can do that. I was just giving my opinion on the teams I saw play and somewhat followed.
