The No. 4 overall pick, currently held by the Kings, is generating significant trade interest from teams further down in the draft order, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said during NBA Countdown on Thursday night (video link).
With Jabari Smith, Chet Holmgren, and Paolo Banchero widely expected to be the first three players off the board next Thursday, teams interested in acquiring the No. 4 pick have a specific target in mind, according to Wojnarowski.
“That No. 4 pick that the Sacramento Kings hold is very much in play. There are a lot of teams trying to get deals done with Sacramento so they can move up to select Jaden Ivey,” Wojnarowski said. “That’s teams close to them in the lottery – (the Pistons and Pacers), who are five and six – the New York Knicks at No. 11, (the) Washington Wizards at No. 10, and even some teams outside of the lottery.”
While not everyone agrees on how many players make up the top tier of the 2022 draft class, Ivey has frequently been included in that group alongside the three big men, making him the odds-on favorite to be picked fourth overall. However, there are a number of reasons why the Kings may be inclined to pass on the opportunity to select him.
For one, Sacramento badly wants to make the playoffs and might prefer to use the No. 4 pick to trade for win-now pieces. Additionally, Ivey may not be an ideal fit next to De’Aaron Fox, since both are offense-first guards who aren’t great outside shooters or defenders. On top of all that, a report this week suggested Sacramento isn’t Ivey’s preferred landing spot.
Still, the Kings won’t trade the pick if they don’t like the return, according to Wojnarowski.
“Sacramento’s asking price is going to be significant to move in there,” Woj said. “I think they see this as essentially a four-player draft — there’s a drop-off after No. 4.”
The teams mentioned by Wojnarowski as potential trade partners would all make sense as landing spots for Ivey. He’d fit nicely next to Cade Cunningham in Detroit or Tyrese Haliburton in Indiana, given the size and versatility of those guards. The Knicks and Wizards, meanwhile, are in the market for a long-term solution at the point guard spot and could view Ivey as the answer.
Quinton Mayo reported on his Substack this week that the Wizards’ front office is “really high” on Ivey and has spent a good amount of time exploring trade-up scenarios.
Ivey can definitely play the point in NY. He’s not a CP3 type PG. But he’s got a handle and is a good passer. He and RJ can be the backcourt of the future. Iveys Mom is a coach. So he’s an IQ player and understands his place. Would love to get him.
Not sure the Kings would want any of the Knicks assets… nor move all the way back to 11. The same goes for the Wizards.
I think a trade back with Detroit or the Pacers is most likely – acquiring an asset and still getting their “guy”.
Regardless, as a Kings fan, this is good news. We need as many assets as we can get and if Ivey really is the guy, let’s draft him and figure it out later – just like we did with Tyrese. At the very least, we flip him for another all-star level talent (like we did for Sabonis) if the fit isn’t there.
If Sac can get Cam Reddish, NYK’s unprotected 2023 1st & 11 that would be very good return for #4. Cam, AJ Griffin plus a lottery pick next yr is def worth Ivey from Sac’s pov.
Can the Knicks give the 11th pick and their own 2023 pick? I thought teams couldn’t trade consecutive year picks?? Would the ’23 pick have to be the Dallas pick?…I agree that I’m not too confident Sac wants what the Knicks have. Indy & Det can offer picks that would be in better slots IMO.
That rule only applies to future drafts. Swapping the 11th in 2022 doesn’t count
New York post
Knicks offer Toppins and 11 for 4
The No. 11 pick next years first a 2nd and Grimes
Grimes wouldn’t be enough for me. Kings need help on the wing. Cam could potentially be a starter. Grimes not so much
You should consult with your own GM in ATL. He wanted Grimes straight up for Reddish, but was turned down, and he took CHA 1st for BKN 2nd. Those two FO’s are not alone in valuing Grimes over Reddish.
Lol where are you getting this misinformation? Schlenk said numerous times throughout the season that they wanted a 1st for Cam & that’s exactly what they got. The fact that NYK traded for Cam at all shows how much they value Grimes lol they traded a 1st for a more expensive, more highly thought of guy that plays the same position
What ATL wanted generically is irrelevant. Anyone who follows the NBA would know the details of the NYK-ATL trade. Maybe you know someone?
NYK wanted to use 2nd rounders, ATL wanted Grimes, and they settled on CHA’s heavily protected 1st, with the NYK getting BKN’s 2025 2nd. So ATL did not even get a protected 1st outright for Cam. Anyway, when both were healthy, Grimes got the rotation minutes and Cam sat.
When you talk to that person who knows something about the NBA, ask him how many times an unprotected 1st has been traded to move up 7 spots in the draft. Maybe you’ll let him educate you.

This is on a different trade offer for Reddish, but it recites what is well known, that ATL wanted to move Reddish for Grimes.
Well Reddish is more expensive, anyway.
Reddish got traded to Wall Street city, where he can take out a sub-Grimes mortgage. ((:D))
Knicks have plenty picks they can offer plus young players. If they wanted to, they could overpay.
Cam, Quickley and the 11th pick.
Where would Quickley fit in? He’d be our third PG behind Fox and Davion. Can would be nice, but I just don’t see it.
Don’t want to trade Toppin…not sure what other people are seeing but guy is gonna be a stud for years to come…dump Randle if we can and start Toppin….he gave us a glimpse at the end of the season even if it was garbage time
SMH don’t understand Kings management. They are so impatient. They feel they can win immediately instead of building a team.
Excuse me ?? 16 yrs of rebuilding or wait til next year, isn’t going to last forever. Enough of the rebuilding crap !! Anything short of making the playoffs next year is a complete failure. Build for the future ?? What another 6 yrs ?? I don’t think so !!
How tough the west will be next year I don’t see them getting pass the play in. That is the best they can hope for maybe 1 or 2 playoff games.
Here’s one thing a lot of people are not considering. Look at LAL or GSW, for example : they are both over the Salary Cap by Huge amounts, I believe and you can correct me if I’m wrong $147m for the GSW; $156m for the LAL. The Salary Cap last year was $115m, so there lays your problem. It’s Not too many teams, It’s too many greedy super stars. If you want to go to the playoffs, you have to spend huge amounts. But it also has a bad side, such as the LAL w/ too many EGOs and Ball Hogs who think they are the team. There’s no “I” in Team. Too many egos, and they won’t gel into a Cohesive Team.
Yes, the West will be a hard nut to crack, but all those players are getting older and won’t be there for long !!
Im going to side w Arc on this one
Rebuilding is so tough in any sport, there’s no set guildines or timeframes to follow and it differs from team to team and there’s also a bit of unforeseen luck needed that can’t be forced or infringed upon
I look at the Philadelphia Phillies, they waited a couple years then decided to just blow the roof off too fast as the fanbase was under the KHE eyes and it still haunts them today . You gotta give it time and do it right.
The NBA should move rebuilds quicker than the MLB but for every mis-step forward you have to take 2 steps back…Kings indeed have been too impatient this decade IMO
It’s a shame too, great basketball town that loves their team – Those late 90’s early 00’s Kings were soo soo sooo good and that arena was rocking / I doubt the younger generations even remember . They shoulda won it all 02
02 was rigged by that dirty ref and the NBA. It was painful.
NYK have the assets to go from #11 to #4 based on historical pricing (two additional 1st’s, lotto protected or the like), but, based on what’s written, they aren’t going to be a player for #4 here.
SAC apparently wants either (i) “win now” veteran talent (i.e., not the additional draft picks they NYK would be offering), or (ii) a trade that allows them not to pick Ivey (meaning they’d be looking only to move down a spot or two).
OG + a future first for the #4 pick
Nothing will happen till draft night when Sac is on the clock anyway…nobody wants to chance one of those top 3 teams shaking up the draft and taking Ivey earlier than everyone thinks
True. But things are worked out ahead of time on an “if -, then -” basis. I can’t think of any recent trade of a top 10 pick that wasn’t rumored to death days before the draft.
Maybe OG for the 4th.
Not sure, he’s the guy the Raps are after, but why not.
OKC could trade out. Kings, Blazers, Pelicans most likely to trade.
Blazers pick gets us Mathurin. Might like that better than Ivey. Plus we won’t have to give up as much.
How about trading the #4 Pick, Holmes & Harkless to Detroit for 6-8 SF G. Grant !!
Overpay. Get Olynyk plus more too
You guys are too wild for me.
@KHE that’s what I’ve been hearing as well. The 4th pick and Holmes for Jeremy Grant. I also heard Grant would prefer not to go to Sacramento if traded. In my opinion the Kings and Knicks franchises are both cursed.
“Additionally, Ivey may not be an ideal fit next to De’Aaron Fox, since both are offense-first guards who aren’t great shooters…”
How can a player be considered “offense-first if he’s not a great shooter?
“Outside shooters” probably would’ve been a better choice of words. They can hit mid-range jumpers, but their strength is breaking down defenses and getting to the rim. Sort of Westbrook-esque.
I do think Ivey has some potential to develop a reliable outside shot (he made strides there this past season), but Fox hasn’t improved there at all.
Wizards trade kristaps and 10 for Richard Holmes and 4. I feel like the kings would do it
Nobody wants Porzingis, I think SAC would target OG.
Rockets need to trade 17th and 26th and Eric Gordon or picks plus the other players they just received for the 4th pick
They want win now pieces, not draft picks and Eric Gordon.
Kings want move the needle pieces, reddish, grimes and Toppin aren’t moving crap.
Kings are wanting Grant, Randle, Turner type of return
Oddly I could definitely see a deal with NYK and Detroit surrounding No 11 and Hayes/olynyk as the main pieces but I can see where knicks faithfuls would be opposed because they’re both complementary pieces but hates has the chance to be a Marcus Smart level player because he can be a great defender. It is just a matter of him developing an offense that allows him to also put up 12-14 a night because he can definitely run an offense with his vision and passing
Sadly this isn’t the strongest draft which is why being outside that top 4 really hurts.
If Detroit isn’t able to get Ivey at 5 I am hoping they select Murray. I see the Portland pick in play at 7 and think a Grant deal would be highly likely. Although they’d deal Grant to the Kings for number 4 without hesitation.
