The Knicks are “gaining major momentum” in their pursuit of Mavericks free agent guard Jalen Brunson, league sources tell Marc Stein (Substack link).
As Stein notes, the Knicks began shedding 2022/23 salary on draft night when they agreed to send Kemba Walker ($9.2MM) to Detroit and moved off their first-round pick, removing a projected cap hold of $4.5MM from next season’s books. They don’t have enough cap room yet to make Brunson a competitive offer, but there’s a growing belief they’ll be able to get there, Stein writes.
Sources tell Stein that the Knicks appearing to be preparing an offer in the range of $100MM over four years for Brunson.
The Mavericks have long expressed confidence in their ability to re-sign Brunson, with president of basketball operations Nico Harrison repeating that refrain on draft night, telling reporters that the Knicks’ efforts to create cap room didn’t come as a surprise, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN (Twitter link).
“Until he tells us that he doesn’t want to be here, we’re optimistic,” Harrison said.
However, according to Stein, the Mavs believed at the end of the season that a four-year offer in the range of $85-88MM would likely be enough to retain Brunson. That appears increasingly unlikely to be the case.
Dallas holds Brunson’s Bird rights and has the ability to offer any amount up to the maximum, plus a fifth year — the Knicks are limited to four years. But he’ll be an unrestricted free agent, so the Mavs won’t necessarily be able to retain him by matching or exceeding the Knicks’ offer.
Stein says there’s a growing belief among some people close to the situation that Brunson is interested in making the move to New York, where his former agent Leon Rose runs the Knicks’ front office and his father Rick Brunson was recently hired as an assistant coach.
According to Stein, the opportunity to take on a “new challenge and broadened responsibility” with the Knicks may appeal to the younger Brunson. Stein cites sources who say there’s “growing fear” within the Mavs’ organization about the point guard’s flight risk.
Rose virtually never holds media sessions and wouldn’t be able to publicly discuss Brunson anyway, but it’s worth noting that he put out an official statement on Friday discussing the Knicks’ draft-night moves — the phrase “increased financial flexibility” earned a prominent place in that statement explaining the team’s strategy (Twitter link via Ian Begley of SNY.tv).
This is happening…along with a trade of those picks for another piece….the big domino will be finding a new home for Fournier…if they can shed him and Burks and Noel they will have a ton of flexibility
They don’t necessarily need to shed Burks and Noel. Keeping them and their expiring deals plus Rose’s $15 million expiring gives them around $35 million in cap flexibility next offseason.
But also, I can’t imagine anyone would trade for Fournier.
Personally prefer Tyus Jones over Brunson. I’d do a Jones for Fournier swap. They can do a sign and trade for Jones and they need shooting on the wing so Fournier fits
Memphis definitely wouldn’t do that
He’s a restricted free agent. And he’s been making noise about wanting to start. They may choose to get something for him. Also they traded Melton their second most prolific 3 point shooter and can use Fournier to make that up. It’s not as far fetched as it seems
still the grizzlies are not a contender so quickly in their rebuild by doing knicks-level trades. fournier is not a player for contenders
they can pick something better and cheaper than fournier for jones if he decides he wants to start
Of course he’d prefer to start like every other player but it’s not a deal breaker. Tyus is actually an unrestricted fa. If he made it clear to Memphis that he’s not coming back they might facilitate a s&t to get some value back but it definitely wouldn’t be an expensive long term contract like Fournier’s. I tend to think they’ll do pretty much whatever necessary to keep him. Ja is really the only guy ppl talk about as far as the Grizzlies but they aren’t nearly as good without Tyus as they are with him
I agree with Sankara. Memphis would not do that trade and would have little interest in Fournier.
If I were the Knicks, I’d trade Fournier for Ja Morant or Cade Cunningham.
And if I, a Knicks fan, were the GM of Memphis or Detroit, I would do that trade and then resign instantly.
Don’t resign. Make them fire you, that way you get to keep your salary.
Spurs here: we’ll take your trash (Fournier) for those 3 FRPs you got last night.
I love southpaws. Shakur Stevenson & Tank Davis probably my 2 fav current fighters. Max Fried & Ty Matzek prob my 2 fav pitchers. The 2015 Rockets prob my fav non-Hawks nba team of the past decade mainly bc of their lefties (Harden, JSmith, D-Mo & TJones). But is anyone truly expecting Brunson, Randle & Barrett to collectively achieve anything of note in the East over the next 5yrs? I’d love this move for Brunson but not nearly as much for the Knicks
Completely agree. That core gets you to the playoffs but nowhere near being a true contender.
I woulda rather seen the Knicks give up a large haul to get Ivey last night.
I think we all know as Knicks fans how this is going to go down. They’ll either overpay Brunson and look to unload his contract two years from now when it inevitably doesn’t work out, or, more likely, they clear the space, he doesn’t sign here and in a desperate attempt to do something they’ll throw big money at someone not worth it and be right back in salary cap hell with a team not bad enough to be in the top-10 of the lottery but not good enough to make the playoffs.
Dinwiddie is Jalen Brunson insurance
Brunson
6 feet
True value $60 million
Market value $100 million
They should sign and trade for Burks Reddish Noel
Brunson wants to win. New York doesn’t have any good players
Not remotely a knicks fan but this is a somehow hilarious statement. RJ Barrett was already great and going to get better, Mitchell is a solid center and even Beyblade could surprise and fix his attitude. Now get a good point guard that’s a missing piece and build on from there.
If I was a fan it would kill me the most that they lost a helluva prospect in Duren.
Barrett is good, Mitchell is solid when healthy but also an unrestricted FA….he overlooked Barrett but the statement isn’t inaccurate
Mavs better off trading for brodgon. 100 is too much
Oh bs .if jb wants to win anytime in the next decade he re signs with dallas.if he don’t oh well hit the bricks .but no way in hell nico and j kidd lose him for nothing.sign and trade will happen and mavs still stomp the Knicks with out jb.
I wish there was any type of market for Randle…Toppin should be starting…he gave a taste of what he could do at the end of the season…when he gets a chance Knicks fans will see they didn’t screw up that pick
I agree but unfortunately, they’re stuck with Randle unless some team’s GM has a brain-ectomy and trades for him. If they indeed get Brunson, I would like to see a Brunson, RJ, Obi, Randle, Mitch lineup with Fournier off the bench. At least try it out.
I like that lineup but obi will get killed defensively by small forwards…There’s gotta be a deal in the works for those picks…I’m hoping it’s not just to dump salary…
I didn’t think Brunson was coming, and I was (very) content with that. After last nights Trade-III, I now think they almost have to get him.
You simply don’t trade #13 on draft day 2022 for the 2025 1st of a contender to shed 9 mm of salary under an expiring deal, UNLESS you have an immediate need for the space, as in this off season. So, Trade-III is a (real) bad trade unless they end up signing Brunson, under circumstances that suggest this space was need for the signing (directly) or to create the leverage needed to compel a buyer friendly S&T.
Even if they sign Brunson, they could just stretch Walker and find the other 3 million elsewhere.
There’s something else going on.
Possibly. Cap space simply wasn’t going to be a big problem in procuring Brunson. He’s likely to move by S&T wherever he goes.
I didn’t mind NYK’s actions last night at all. They are getting slammed in the media but national outlets hardly have a clue on team building and hardly ever take a look deeper than surface level
I assumed their guy got picked, they did a good job in a short period of time re-calibrating. Pond is nicely stocked for when the right moment/trade comes along. Personally Id take that over an early teen pick I wasn’t thrilled about in the first place
* Stretching is usually never a good idea especially on a team like the current Knicks. Look how much the Deng/Batum stretches’ have caused their clubs
C&C –
I agree, they shouldn’t be slammed for the night as a whole. That’s media nonsense. Big picture, they made two good trades, value-wise. Getting 3 1st’s for #11 (grade A). Getting #13 for one of those 1st’s plus a bunch of seconds (grade B+). Had they stopped there, they would have picked up 2 additional 1st’s to trade down two spots (and give up a bunch of 2nds), and could take a bow. But the last trade, selling off #13 for a 2025 pick and a pittance of salary relief, IMO, ruined a lot of their good work, and I can’t think of a reason for it. Maybe it’s to come.
Generally, I’m a big fan of trading down and out of drafts vs taking players that you’re lukewarm on or that you like but can’t get minutes for. Most teams don’t like to trade down, though, as it infuriates the media and fanbase when their team doesn’t come away with a body. Value charts are on my side, and suggest that when in doubt, trade down.
Agree on W/S as well. I think every team that did it with a big contract ended up regretting it. Teams are getting away from it. In the FA/S&T back and forth, I view W/S as a weapon of last resort, something to threaten more than use. Keeps the counterparties honest. Just like S&T’s get done faster when the existing team knows you do have a path to enough cap space to do it without them.
I just don’t think they liked 13 in all honesty,( it was considered a dead zone pre draft )- Maybe they saw Williams and Duren the 2 best values but didn’t want to commit an ehh shoulder shrug pick on a C (I don’t blame them as I see the C market overly saturated with value C’s the next 2 years )
I do think the first 2 trades represent better value but when on the clock ya gota do what ya gotta do….The trade market was very rangy last night with the Knicks opening the ++ side early on 11 then it went scatter brains from there up and down .
Just my take, then there might have been a greater push to play the sophs and jrs a bit more than developing a rook again this year. I actually think they sit better today than yesterday even if they didn’t make a pick last night
I totally agree, Cap. I don’t love what they did because of the uncertainty of all of the protections and whatnot down the line, but there’s no reason for them to be getting savaged like they are by fans/media.
Turned #11, Kemba Walker, and four 2nds into three probably mid- to late-round 1sts and $9 million in cap space. It’s nothing earth-shattering but it’s a decent move.
Stretching normally isn’t good and you should never put yourself in a position to have to do that but we aren’t talking about being in the mood to stretch for fun or not.
They traded 4 picks in next years draft and a pick in 2024 for a pick in 2025 and 9 million.
Has anyone ever traded 4 picks to avoid cutting or stretching one 9 million dollar contract?
Those four picks are 2nd rounders, though. They’re borderline worthless. Finding any player in the second round that contributes anything of value is a rarity.
If NBA teams didn’t need to use 2nd rounders as trade filler, they could completely abolish the 2nd round and very little in the league would change.
The Knicks got bent over by Sam Presti getting a top 10 pick for 3x fut 2x conditional picks w heavy lottery protections. Top 18, top 14, top 14. Chance neither conveys, and if they do could be picks in 20s 3-4 yrs from now.
That wasn’t bad enough, then after Sam Presti the best gm in the gm… got Ol Leon Rose bentover…
Troy weaver GM of the Pistons took his turn railroading Leon Rose…
CHOO CHOO… CHOO CHOO…. CHUGGA CHUGGA CHUGGA CHOO CHOO…
Knicks fans feel violated.
24hrs Earlier Knicks fans think there trading up to get Jaden Ivey… Det laughed at offer for Kemba but said go get pick 13 & Duren & we will eat the 9mil. Not Fourniers 18mil deal! Only 9mil off cap, Knicks gave up Den 1st from okc 1 of the 3.. plus 4x fut 2nds.. they drafted Jalen Duren who os a Stud & elite Shot Blocker who dunks everything. Passed on M Williams, Jalen Williams, Ousmanne Dieng, AJ Griffin …
And they gave up a 1st & 4x 2nds & pick 13..
They get back 2025 Mil pick top 4 protected..
So 2x picks from WAS & DET will not convey top 10 picks & may not convey AT all.
And mil pick.in 2025 top 4 protected projects to be a late 20s pick..
NYKs don’t get a young prospect like TYTY they could have traded down for..
They don’t get a rookie scale, instead trading 1sts to drop 9 mil in cap space to go after a non all Star in Jalen Brunson who is a role guy.
Nyks gonna pay him 100mil bc it’s Leon Rose son agent & Brunson ain’t a 100 mil guy.
He’s solid role guy but not 25mil a yr.
What a joke the knicks are.
Literally Det so bad w top 18 protections it could be 2026 if it conveys at all.
Lowest protections go down to in last year are top 10 for Det & top 6 for WAS.
WAS moves Beal.. it won’t convey prob bc there be tanking for top 5 picks. Det prob conveys 1st but will be decent in a few yrs. So be a mid early 20s in 2026.
What a joke..
Knicks trading 1st rd pucks to dump 9mil on a God awful deal they signed last year.
I feel violated… and I’m not a Knicks fan..
This Leon Rose w pick 11…
Needed to take a young Stud…
Idiotic Moves…
Just trying to get Brunson 25mil a yr..
Will move Fournier ,& those 2x 1sts next prob.
Prob back to OKC… lol
totally overrated by Al-like fans. gonna be exploited by taller PGs and the kncks will be looking to trade him in at most 2 years for the next messiah
good in dallas when doncic run the show and defecnes focused on him, but the knicks don’t have a doncic
AL actually doesn’t like Brunson or want him in NYK
Brunson actually performed a lot better when LUKA was OFF the court as well
Double spaced?
“The Knicks got bent over by Sam Presti getting a top 10 pick for 3x fut 2x conditional picks w heavy lottery protections. ”
In your very first sentence, you instantly got the details wrong. They traded pick #11, not ‘a top 10 pick’. They traded #11 now for probably three picks in the 15-25 range down the line. It’s not great but by no means did they get ‘bent over’.
Strange moves by the Knicks is normal. But your take on Presti being the best GM is hilarious. He didn’t even manage to win with 3 future MVPs and chose the wrong one to trade.
Now his team sucks and has more draft picks then they can use. Winning is the point not future asset collection.
How could Presti be the best GM in the sport when he settled for two of those worthless picks in exchange for #16 (Sengun) in a better draft last year, and settled for the third in exchange for Jeremy Grant? Certainly Rose outperformed him in at least getting all 3 of those worthless picks for #11.
Top 11 pick ………
Looks like you got bent ……
Brunson was dominant when not in Lukas shadow just like Toppin when Randle was injured….would rather have Brunson than any of the other rumored options like Russel, Kyrie or Brogdon….
exclusive Al statement
“The Knicks won the draft”
Honestly, I’m ashamed to say I’m a Knicks fan. We’ve been getting screwed since Jeff van gundy left. Probably the best coach we’ve had in a long time. Would love to have seen him in the front office besides these clowns we have now. Although it was a short season, we did make the finals that year vs S.A.spurs. But I agree… We got royalty screwed with no lube by Phil Jackson, OKC and Detroit. Frank Nitikika, Kevin Knox… Really? Julius Randle is our best player? Last year had the most cap space, and spent it on a bunch of garbage. We always wait until the good fa are gone and pick up garbage. It might be time to change teams. OKC looks like a great team to ride with cause I’m sure they will crush the Knicks next season!!!
Good thought. Make the break, but do it right, so as to be an example for others. Avoid, for several years, even viewing a thread dealing with the Knicks, and under no circumstances post any comment about them. We’ll all be impressed.

Not a Brunson fan. But he’s coming to Knicks. Seems real to me.
Let Brunson go to NY. Work out a sign and trade and get back a few first. Then turn and use those first and go get murray from the spurs. Better player than Brunson imo. Brunson probably has better footwork down low but that’s about it
