The Jazz will sign Illinois center Kofi Cockburn, tweets Jonathan Givony of ESPN. He will receive an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic (Twitter link).
The seven-footer was a first-team All-American this season and a first-team All-Big 10 selection the past two years. He averaged 20.9 points, 10.6 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game as a junior before declaring for the draft.
Marquette guard Darryl Morsell is also signing with Utah, tweets Jon Chepkevich of Rookie Scale. Like Cockburn, he’ll get an Exhibit 10 contract, per Givony (Twitter link).
Morsell spent his first four collegiate seasons at Maryland and was named Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year in 2021. He averaged 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 31 games for the Golden Eagles.
An Exhibit 10 deal is a one-year, minimum-salary contract that counts toward a team’s 20-man offseason roster limit, but doesn’t count against the cap unless the player makes the regular season roster. Although it’s not guaranteed, a player on an Exhibit 10 contract can earn a bonus of up to $50K if he’s waived and then joins his team’s G League affiliate. An Exhibit 10 contract can also be converted into a two-way deal before the start of the regular season.
The cockburn might be caused by the multiple wives per household in Utah
Bummer
I’m surprised he couldnt land a two way deal
Kofi Cockburn and Udoka Azubuike are the Bruise Brothers.
That’s going to be some serious Beef in the paint. Training Camp should be interesting with those 2 behemoths battling it out.
Coffee Cockburn sounds like a McDonald’s lawsuit.
Morsell looks really active and focused. His body and movement reminds me of a young Wade and Oladipo. Has great size, speed, and hops for a guard. Plays awesome defense. When you watch his interviews you can see his intense focus and confidence. Great pickup!
Kofi, first of all, he’s huge! I like his sincerity and philanthropic ideals. That’s a powerful motivator to be great so he can help more people. As for basketball, he has a variety of moves and actually has a nice jumpshot, jumphook, and even a fadeaway! I love his fun energy and power! Not too many players in the entire NBA could hold their footing against him. He post moves are excellent!
He would most definitely make an opposing team pay for going small. Plus, he’s an athlete with good footwork (plays soccer). I can see him flourishing with the Jazz! I could also see him in entertainment. =)
Probably needs to develop his passing out of double teams. Likely still needs to continually keep working on his closeout speed to the corners, just in case.
Jordan Usher is the other guy, other than the already mentioned and Johnny Juzang. Usher’s game reminds me of a mix between Jordan Clarkson and Draymond Green. Love Usher’s fire and energy. He’s a great passer from the high post. I would love to see what he could do running the secondary offense from the top of the key. He has a good jumpshot and running speed. I could see him and Morsell causing havoc together on defense to fastbreaks. But it’s his focus, fire, and fearless demeanor that I love from him and these other guys the Jazz have brought in. Excited to see them play!
How do these guys slip through system so completely? Glad the Jazz are paying attention. Not the first guys they’ve gotten this way.
