2:04pm: The trade is complete, the Magic confirmed in a press release (Twitter link). In 2028, Orlando will receive either the Lakers’ or the Wizards’ second-round pick, whichever is better.
It’s unclear how much cash changed hands in the deal, but it will be no more than $2.15MM, since the Magic were prohibited from receiving more than that in a trade for the remainder of the 2021/22 league year.
12:54pm: The Lakers will trade into the second round of tonight’s draft by acquiring the 35th pick from the Magic in exchange for cash and a future second-rounder, tweets ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Orlando will receive a second-round pick in 2028, sources tell Khobi Price of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter link).
The Lakers had been trying to land a draft pick and are now in position to grab any projected late first-rounders who slide a few spots. Wendell Moore, Christian Braun and Caleb Houstan may be names to watch, according to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer (Twitter link).
The trade leaves the Magic with picks No. 1 and 32.
35 aint a bad pick. Just another asset to attach to Westbrook and try to get him outta there.
Today’s draft is very deep but none of them will be top 20 players in the nba. imo.
There are about 30 rotation players on today’s draft.
Bad GMs will make 15 bad picks in the first round today.
35th pick has ton of value for a good GM.
Especially since early 2nds have more favorable contract terms for teams, which honestly makes a 32nd pick better than a 28th pick in a lot of cases.
The 28th pick comes with an extra year of control so would be more valuable to rebuilders and 35 is smarter for the Lakers who want to compete, I actually think there will be a player at 35 that can help them, but they need a few bad picks to happen to push a guy down to them
That isn’t accurate. 2nd rounders don’t have specific contracts like first rounder do. You can sign a second round pick for anywhere between 1 and 4 years using either the minimum salary exception or the midlevel.
unless you count Pelinka as one of those bad gm’s
Good point, but to be fair they’ve done a decent job of drafting and developing guys even with latter picks
Good luck with that.
The key word was “try”.
No one is going to do the Lakers any favors in taking on a selfish declining malcontent even as a rental; that goes for both contenders and rebuilding teams. Their pickings will be quite slim and this probably won’t move the needle.
Westbrook not going; can we add hoopsjunkie to the list of those who try to help the Lakers?
Lakers have done well with picks in this area and the list above is solid. Great move
I’m helping the Lakers by commenting on HoopsRumors?
lol The key word was trying.
Nobody does favors for anybody in the NBA
RW could be traded easily but it would probably hurt the franchise more than help so you will see him in purple and gold next year for that reason
Dang that’s rough no one taking it easy on the lakehers. Gotta trade draft pick of same value plus cash lol
The limit is about $6 million cash. I think.
Teams face limits on the amount of cash they can send out and receive in trades. Once they reach those limits, they’re no longer permitted to include cash in a deal until the following league year.
That’s because they’ve been one of the worst run franchises in the league the last 8 years. The only reason why they got Lebron and AD was because they happened to be located in Los Angeles and it’s good for their other business ventures.
What a dumb trade by Orlando. There is no way that 2nd round pick is going to be better than #35 in 2028. That pick could be in the 50s by then.
Yeah but Orlando’s roster is already chock full of prospects and young players fighting for playing time. It doesn’t make sense to add another prospect to their roster right now. Who knows, with the way things are going for the Lakers right now there’s a good chance they suck in 2028 and that’s a good pick.
The pick is the Lakers or Wizards second round in 2028, whichever is better. Odds are one of the 2 teams will be at the bottom by then.
So it will be as good as the #35, but 6 years later.
Brilliant. Hope they like the cash for helping the Lakers. /s
Yes, that’s the point. 6 years later. They don’t need the pick and roster spot right now.
Plus cash is always nice for a small market team.
Cash goes to the owner, picks to the team. A draftnstash would be contributing by then, if the pick hits. Given Orlando’s success rate, they need to make picks.
The Lakers will probably stick their pick into the rotation to get James passes and at least appear successful!
Actually I was rooting for them in ’20 but their backers are ridiculous.
And the owner is the person who decides whether or not to invest in free agents signings and into the luxury tax, so as a small market that’s very helpful. Offloading a late first round or second pick is a normal move teams make when they don’t want to add an extra contract and roster spot. Especially when you’re Orlando and you have Suggs,Anthony, Fultz, RJ Hampton, Franz Wagner, Jonathan Isaac, Mo Vagner, Bamba, Carter Jr, Chuma Okeke, Terrence Ross, and not to mention the number 1 pick and number 32 pick which will also be good prospects that take up roster spots and playing time. They have too many prospects and young players right now, so this is a perfect opportunity to swap for a future pick pick and get some extra cash for it too!
These are 16th to 20th best players ranked by reporters
LaVine
Jaylen Brown
Mitchell
Rudy Gobert
Towns
Those 3 big men on this draft are not better than Towns.
To be fair, if they end up being a positive on the defensive end they will be pretty well ahead of Towns in that department even now. And I realize he wasn’t as bad on defense this past season. But it does sap some of his playoff value.
Still a great player, of course. But those things tend to matter in pursuing championships.
Yes a couple probably are. Gobert should be higher though.
Good move by LAL.
From ORL’s perspective, #35 isn’t a pick I would sell prior to the draft unless there’s a premium (I don’t see it here even if the cash is in the 3 m range). Even if I know I’m going to sell, I’d rather wait. I’d risk having to take less, because a pick like that will usually return 2 future seconds (and not 6 years out).
Weird move for Orlando. That’s a pretty high second rounder.
Orlando could have gotten more from like any other team
