JUNE 29: The Rockets have declined their option on Tate and issued him a qualifying offer, making him a restricted free agent, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).
It’s an unexpected move, given that Tate would have been extension-eligible if Houston had picked up his option and would still have been on track for restricted free agency in 2023 if the two sides hadn’t agreed to a new deal.
Presumably, the decision signals the Rockets are confident they’ll be able to lock up Tate to a new multiyear contract on terms they like. Charania says the two sides have “mutual interest” in reaching an agreement.
JUNE 25: As anticipated, the Rockets are picking up the option on Jae’Sean Tate‘s contract for next season, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle.
Tate will earn $1,782,621 next season, according to Spotrac.
It was a mere formality that Houston would exercise that option on a rotation player. Tate started 77 of 78 games in which he appeared last season, averaging 11.8 PPG, 5.4 RPG and 2.8 APG.
Tate will now be a restricted free agent next summer.
How long should it take to entire-rebuild a team to make playoffs?
An entire rebuild can take 5-7 years in East and 7-9 years in West, depending on the draft. (current Lottery odd is bad for rebuild)
IMO
Acquire two superstars is the best model to rebuild
Example
Lakers
Clippers
Nets
What! Sillivan, you are the worst!
All three of the teams you just named did absolutely nothing this year. The Clips have wasted two years and $80M on Kawhi. The Lakers won in a strange 2020 season, but are on a complete downward slide, and the Nets are completely dysfunctional.
Not to mention, not all teams are based in cities of that magnitude.
Additionally, those 3 teams had to rebuild themselves to at least fringe playoff contender level before they had the assets and pedigree to acquire those superstars. This is why the Knicks haven’t made similar moves
Clippers literally had their best season in franchise history with Kawhi. I swear yall have the worst memories. Lol @ a strange 2020 season. Spurs won in a strange 1999 season, who cares? An NBA title is an NBA title. And the Nets are probably the best team in the league when healthy
What are you talking about. Clippers were more successful between 2013-2015 when they had CP3, Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan. Kawhi hasn’t done anything but cost the Clippers all their future draft assets and put them in cap hell.
Clips won 2 playoff series & went to the WCF with Kawhi. Name the LAC season that was better than that…
If you wanna know just look at the warriors timeline .
Rockets can pay him now on the cheap before next year, contract in place?
Next year he could sign 4-year $45 million with other teams, IMO
Lol look at the two teams that were in the Finals! Predominantly home grown talent on both teams. Boston and GS never needed to trade for superstars because they drafted them. Silly Silli.
Did you forget that KD signed with that BS cap explosion and then he did them a favor by allowing himself to be traded so the Warriors could get something back? Kuminga didn’t do much these playoffs but Wiggins finally showed some heart and played well.
A rebuild is a rebuild, regardless of what conference you are in. There’s no bullet proof model on how to do it. Some teams that are destination cities go for clean sheets of cap space and attracting big fish in free agency (i.e. the LeBron, Bosh and Wade model in Miami). Some hoard draft picks (i.e. what Ainge did with the Celtics). Some go for analytics and try to take advantage of a unique angle (example: Houston small ball). Some prioritize athleticism in their players; others specific skill sets of blends of them. The league has trended towards positionless basketball with 3 and D versatility, but all it takes is one franchise or unconventional dominant player to upend that. What may be a 1-2 year rebuild/reset for one franchise may be a 4-5 year process for another.
The Celtics have gone to the playoff 8 straight since their rebuild. Unprotected picks help. OKC has them and The Pelicans do too. The Lakers are good drafters but they were not patient. 2020 they did buy a ring but all down hill since. But as they say how many teams have zero rings.
Hopefully sooner rather then later Tate gets moved to the bench and Tari Eason can be in the starting lineup
So I guess Feigen is not the guy to consult when predicting the future?
Interested to see what that # is that Tate and Houston have agreed to and if the annual amount is lower than either the taxpayer or nontaxpayer MLE.
Taking advantage of the fact nobody has any cap room to get a team friendly deal, I guess. Can teams offer cap exceptions to restricted free agents, or do they have to have cap room? Rockets don’t really have any big contracts on their books, so they can certainly afford to match any reasonable offer, but it’s still a little strange to see a team make irresponsible (cap-wise, and bottomline-wise) moves like this. He only would have cost $1.8m next year, and would have entered restricted free-agency then…I guess maybe they think he’s going to make a big leap and become significantly more expensive?
