After reporting over the weekend that the Grizzlies, who hold the 22nd and 29th overall picks in this Thursday’s draft, are “trying hard” to move up, Marc Stein says in his latest Substack report that Memphis is among the teams that has explored the possibility of acquiring the No. 4 overall pick from the Kings.
It would be a challenge for the Grizzlies to entice the Kings to move that fourth overall pick without a lottery selection of their own to offer in return. As Stein observes, Memphis would probably have to offer up at least one member of its veteran core to pique Sacramento’s interest — Stein mentions Dillon Brooks and Brandon Clarke as possibilities.
Jeremy Woo of SI.com, who confirms that the Grizzlies are trying to trade up from No. 22, suggests that the team has proposed package that includes various veterans, including De’Anthony Melton. However, Woo says Memphis has been trying to move “into the teens,” which is a more realistic goal than getting all the way up to No. 4.
Here are a few more items of interest from Stein:
- Having agreed to acquire Christian Wood from Houston, the Mavericks are “far less likely” to make use of their $10.9MM trade exception, a source tells Stein. That exception, which will expire after June 27, would allow Dallas to acquire nearly $11MM in salary without sending out any salary of their own, but the Mavs already project to be well over the luxury tax line, especially if they re-sign Jalen Brunson, so they’ll be wary about continuing to spend.
- While the Pistons have been cited as a potential suitor for Brunson, Stein hears from sources that they’ve been considering targeting Dennis Schröder as a more cost-effective option in the backcourt.
- Stein also confirms that the Pistons continue to be linked to free agent center Mitchell Robinson and have “very strong interest” in re-signing former No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley III.
- In case you missed it, Stein also passed along several Hawks-related tidbits, which we round up right here.
This is another thing that skirts the salary cap issue for you folks who don’t like the billionaires who spend money on their rosters. This trade exception thing, I really don’t understand it.
If I trade a guy away and I’m over the cap, I receive an exception to the rule for a year and can use that slot? Why even have a salary cap if something like that is in place as well as all the other things like luxury tax and bird exceptions Etc. Puzzling. (I’m referring to the Mavericks tidbit above.)
It’s a mechanism fought for by the players union. Basically, the exceptions prevent the salary “slot” from evaporating into thin air, which theoretically helps keep salaries from being suppressed over time. It allows more money to be spent on salaries overall through the league.
If Ben Mathurin is available Sacramento should grab him & thank God for the opportunity. If not then take Chet & be just as happy if not moreso
Bulls can offer 18 for 22 and 29. Lol
I don’t see the Kings drafting Ben, as they seem to be focused on Ivy, which is an excellent thing for the Pistons because I hope they draft, Ben. He’s perfect for playing off Cade at the 2. Explosive Athlete who can spread the floor. Man, I hope they don’t mess this up.
What makes you think the Kings are focused on Ivey lol?
Basically every draft board or rumor mill. ♂️
Chances are you’ve watched enough basketball to come up with your own thoughts/conclusions without relying on other guys that are also largely guessing to the best of their knowledge. If they didn’t want Haliburton they probably won’t want Ivey either. They’re riding with DFox as their lead guard. Sacramento needs wings & with Paolo & Jabari gone Mathurin is a pretty easy choice if you ask me
I’m pretty versed when it comes to basketball if I do say so myself. That said, generally, where there is smoke, there is fire. I think the fit sucks, but I don’t believe they will jump past Ivey and Murray to get to Ben. I’m sure they will call you before making their choice, so I look forward to your “breaking news” update Thursday night. Lol!! I guess we will see what happens.
Actually Murray would fit them perfectly too. And they won’t have to jump past anybody lol all those guys gonna be cooling in the same room
Sank, Ivey does not have to play PG and conflict with Fox. Where did you read that?— think for yourself, as you say, or stop putting people down for it. Or in general.
He’s at his best as a lead guard, with the ball in his hands running the offense. Same Fox. Same with Haliburton
The fit between Fox and Ivey is risky as they are both better with the ball in their hand and not good shooters. However, i don’t think they should pass on Ivey because of this.
If anything try them together and if it doesn’t work out you could always just deal one of them
Mavs can recycle that TPE for next year by flipping Powell (11.1M) for some combination of cheaper players. However, they did pass on an opportunity in 2020 to do the same with another TPE, the proposed deal was Courtney Lee for Tony Snell.
Grizzlies would need to throw in Brooks not Clarke. Clarke is a bench player so they would want a player that is a starter not a bench player.
Or make it a 3 team deal with Pacers giving up like Turner or so on.
As a Kings fan i would do #4 for Clarke, Zaire Williams and their picks. Interesting that the kings see Ivey as a poor fit with Fox but the Griz are willing to move up to pair him with Morant.
Different scouts see different things with Ivey it seems… I would rather pair Ivey with Fox… Morant & Ivey can both get either wild-ass or stare-y.
Arc2, Brooks may not start before long. I hope Clarke gets a chance to settle in starting somewhere.
I don’t see Clarke as a starter just a good bench player. If you are going to trade a #4 pick in a deep draft you want somebody to start. I just don’t understand Kings thinking in the still need to build because competing in the West next year is tough with about 5 or 6 teams that could be champions.
I don’t think Clarke would quite be enough either, but I do think he could be a starter with them. Fox, Mitchell, Barnes, Clarke, Sabo. He’d start for MEM if they didn’t already have someone as good as JJJ.
If MEM does do this trade, I hope it is for Ben and not Ivey. Just like his o/d combination more than Ivey, and think he’d be a better fit in their starting lineup. Ja, Ivey, & Bane is too weak defensively and I’d much rather keep Bane at the 2. Ja, Bane, & Ben just seems like the better combination imo. This is factoring in that they deal Brooks and would keep Ziaire coming off the bench.
If MEM stays pat with their picks, I’m hoping they go with Ben’s running mate Dalen with one of those late 1st unless someone really drops.
I’m not saying it’s necessarily right or wrong because you don’t want to use it just to use it and screw yourselves, but the Mavs have a history of being cheap
Los Mavs necesitan invertir mas y dompear salaries
