While the Timberwolves are expected to have interest in a reunion with Tyus Jones, the rival team that has been linked most frequently to the Grizzlies‘ free agent point guard is the Wizards, says Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
According to Fischer, Jones is believed to be seeking a multiyear deal worth in excess of the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which projects to come in at $10.35MM.
The Wizards, who are in the market for a starting point guard, will be over the cap, limiting their ability to offer more than the full MLE. However, they could potentially get there if Jones is interested in coming to D.C. and they can figure out a sign-and-trade deal that the Grizzlies would get on board with.
Here’s more on the Wizards:
- Delon Wright has been mentioned as another free agent guard who is on the Wizards’ radar, per Fischer. Wright will be an unrestricted free agent after spending the season in Atlanta.
- Although Malcolm Brogdon still looks like a viable trade target for the Wizards, the team never seriously considered including the No. 10 pick in last week’s draft in an offer for him, Fischer writes.
- Sources tell Bleacher Report that the Wizards are among the teams to inquire on Spurs guard Dejounte Murray, though Washington probably doesn’t have the assets necessary to make the best trade offer for Murray.
- Forward Kyle Kuzma and guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continue to be identified by league personnel as players who are available in trade scenarios, according to Fischer. Caldwell-Pope’s full $14MM salary for 2022/23 became guaranteed after he wasn’t waived on Tuesday, notes Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington (Twitter link).
I felt that Johnny Davis was overrated, but I love his competitiveness. I wouldnt call him a true PG; he’s more of a combo guard, but I think he makes sense at PG with certain pieces around him. While he’s great defensively, I’m not sure he’ll be able to guard bigger positions, and I think he’s a good enough secondary playmaker to play next to someone like Beal, with shooters around them. That’s essentially what I’ve been saying they should be looking for next to Beal anyway; someone that can defend and playmake, although he still needs to show more consistency there
I think they should have tried to address defense at the 4, and they probably would have taken Sochan of the Spurs hadnt, but I think Eason would have made sense for them there, and I could also make an argument for AJ Griffin for more shooting, plus I think he might be a 4 defensively, rather than a 3/2 that he seems like otherwise
I dont think relying on Davis right now is the play, and obviously the rumors are they’re looking g for a guard. I still think the best option is someone who can defend, and playmake would be the best fit. Tyus Jones is small, bit he does do both of those things. I’m not sure of they should be the one to pay him though. I could see him with Davis as a good group, so I wouldnt necessarily say it’s not good either. Delon Wroght is definitely a great option, although I think he would help several teams. Maybe theh make an offer for Oladipo…
Theh definitely need help defensively at the 4 still. They didnt address that in the draft, so that should be a main focus, as well as the guard issue.
I dont think they should move KCP. They finally have wing pieces with hom and Krispert. I think if anything, Hachimura and Avdija are better trade chips for the way the roster is currently constructed unless 1 or both make big leaps forward. I would at least give Avdija a shot to see what he has though
Agree w/former except for the cut-n-paste lol. Interesting to consider Griffin a 4, maybe that has a chance for better fit. But the Wiz have already drafted prospects for the 4 and fans would not appreciate another.
Johnny Davis is someone Beal can get behind (I think), and it may turn out Wiz already have their PG in Beal & KCP.
There’s no point in disparaging Beal’s maxxing.
Beal has expressed approval for teamwide length/height. If so Delon Wright fits.
So would Alec Burks & Frank Jackson, and a number of 2Gs, and Brogdon is still on the outs in Indy.
