Victor Wembanyama, the top-ranked prospect for the 2023 draft, has opted out of his contract with ASVEL Villeurbanne and is signing a two-year deal with Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 from Paris, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony reports.
The 7’3” Wembanyama was also pursued by the G League Ignite, Australian NBL, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Basket and many others, Givony adds. While the terms of the latest contract were not disclosed, it’s logical to assume he’ll have an opt-out clause after the first season, so that he can play in the NBA during the 2023/24 season if he chooses.
We have more from around the basketball world:
- Players being intentionally fouled to prevent fast break buckets has been a point of contention in recent seasons. The NBA is addressing that issue in Summer League games, Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press tweets. Those fouls will result in one free throw, plus the ball. It’s likely a precursor for what’s to come, Reynolds adds, with the Board of Governors expected to make the final change regarding transition take fouls later this month.
- Olimpia Milano has parted ways with former NBA guard Jerian Grant after one season, according to Sportando. Grant has 279 NBA games on his resume, mostly recently during the 2019/20 season, when he appeared in six Wizards contests.
- Kevin Durant‘s desire to be traded after signing an extension which doesn’t kick in until next season is something the owners want to fix, Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today writes. It has been suggested that owners may want to recoup money the earlier a player is into his contract and a trade request is honored. However, it may be impossible to have a punitive enough deterrent for players who are signing massive deals.
Thank god, those take fouls made me want to punch my tv
I’m sure you’ll find some other harmless thing to be disproportionately angry about sooner than later
What makes basketball great is the flow and take fouls interrupt basketballs grace and flow
Yet somehow the last two minutes of game time always seem go on for about 30 minutes of real time.
They need to limit Ref challenges to 5 minutes or less decision. Also allow Out of bounds plays can be challenged in last 2 minutes but cost a team a time out so it makes no delays in the game.
Feeling more & more likely that in the next couple days KD will be on the Suns, Spida & JCollins will be on the Nets, Ayton will be on the Jazz, Kyrie will be a Laker & my guy Ben Simmons will (finally) be an Atlanta Hawk.
So you are saying AD is being traded? Nobody wants Westbrook so it will take AD in a trade to get Kyrie or Durant.
Lol @ nobody wants Westbrook. Remember yall said that when he was in Hou yet they found a trade partner with no problem. Then when he was in DC yall were screaming it again, his contract is too big & too long, nobody will take it. Of course DC was also able to trade him & get a very nice return. Here yet again the Russ haters are extremely vocal against him, saying that his contract is untradeable, ignoring the fact thst you’ve been wrong about him so many times before. Just calm down & think logically without all that animosity you have toward Russ. His contract is now an expiring contract. Whether you can see it or not I promise that Russ, while definitely overpaid, is still a guy that can be traded
Arc bases his posts on feelings
He has no clue what market is nor the undercurrents going on in the NBA
Or you could have just said, All contracts may be exchanged for one of similar value, and big ones go too.
But no, Sank has to make sure he can rip everyone at once in a word-turd block.
I’d actually be okay with 1 per game so that’s a warning kinda like delay of game. Otherwise all take fouls should be team technicals.
Make it a flagrant 1 also
Just add clauses that state if you’re opting out with less than half of the games played then you can ONLY opt out by having the rest of your contract voided and you can only sign a 1 year deal with the new team.
5 year $200 mil deal with only 1 year completed. Trade requested and honored by team. Player’s salary is halted for rest of year, original team can trade player WITHOUT having to match salary in trade they just absorb the value of the incoming players and some sort of assigned value of picks. Player finishes that year with new team picking up the rest of the players salary prorated for that year. Next year he can ONLY sign for 1 year desk with that team. Next year he’s a free agent.
a) Player sacrifices security for his freedom.
b) Trading team isn’t burdened by having to take back salary from players they usually don’t want but are needed to match salary rules. They can choose what plays they want because of their talent not their salaries. Quicker rebuild and less salary cap issues.
c) New team has deterrent to make trade because incoming player can only fill out rest of the year plus 1 additional year before hitting the open market as a free agent. Terms only apply to the “main player” being traded not any others involved.
Player risks losing guaranteed money.
Trade team risks giving up assets and then watching player leave after 1 1/2 seasons of service.
How bad you want to leave now??
1 free throw won’t stop it. Teams will still do it for the chance it’s only 1 pt instead of an easy 2. Needs to be 2 free throws plus ball.
While they’re at it, make a rule against the guy hiding in the corner and then coming up from behind to steal the ball, like it’s grade school recess on the playground.
If not, don’t take away the “advantage” of a take foul.
I’ve articulated many times why I think that rule change is dumb. Its not something that happens consistently and if a team has a foul to give, it makes sense to do in certain situations. A lot of times, it’s a poor decision…which is why there are clear path fouls that give them the ball as well…so now, does clear path even matter? Maybe we should have fewer team fouls result in the penalty then b/c this doesnt make sense
Makes no sense to not penalize something because some like to do it.
Either a penalty is good for the game or not.
Either it’s possible to enforce or not.
The clear path foul can be superceded no problem— it mostly just causes delays while the refs take everyone out of the game to watch tv themselves lol.
Makes the games longer.
What “take fouls” take from the game (flow, excitement), a free throw will not compensate. The ref should raise his arm, then wait to the end of the possession to blow his whistle… and this can be done for any backcourt foul too, expandable eventually to any defensive foul. Don’t break up the flow, especially in unique, spontaneous situations, that differ from the ho-hum back-n-forth look BB can take on..
THEY DO THIS IN SOCCER routinely, Mr.Silver.
