JULY 18: Connaughton’s extension is now official, according to NBA.com’s transactions log.
The deal has matching annual cap hits of $9,423,869, for a three-year total of $28,271,607, Hoops Rumors has learned. As noted below, the final year is a player option.
JULY 12: The Bucks and swingman Pat Connaughton are finalizing a three-year contract extension, Shams Charania of The Athletic tweets. The deal will lock up Connaughton through the 2025/26 season.
The extension will be worth $28.5MM and includes a player option, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, who tweets that the two sides have reached an agreement.
Last month, Connaughton chose to put off free agency by opting in to the last year of his current contract. He’ll make $5,728,393 next season.
His option decision was somewhat surprising at the time but an extension was apparently already in the works. He was eligible to sign a contract extension for up to four years and approximately $58MM after opting in, so Milwaukee managed to secure his services for a lesser amount.
Connaughton, 29, had the best season of his seven-year career in 2021/22, averaging 9.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game in 65 appearances (26.0 MPG). He also established new career highs in three-pointers per game (2.2) while knocking them down at a 39.5% clip.
Feast or famine… much better ways to spend that money.
How? They couldn’t spend this money on outside players and Connaughton has gotten better every season.
Him and Grayson was cold asf in the playoffs especially Celtics series
The coldest I have never seen vs Celtics
Grayson
Connaughton
Hill
The coldest I have never seen vs Warriors
Grant Williams
Derrick White
Pritchard
10 million for him really? They’re playing for the championship. They can’t afford to spend 10 on this guy.
You are right. This is an overpay but it is better contract than Larry Sanders, Jon Henson, Eric Bledsoe, and so many others. This is the crap that goes on in small market NBA cites.
And really all cites. See Duncan Robinson.
Bucks owners are worth ~$8B. They can afford it.
That’s the going rate these days. He’s a valuable rotation player. They won a title with him in that role.
If THT is making this much then the bucks got a bargain in comparison
As of today,
Bucks need to pay $51 million luxury tax this season.
Exceed tax line $22 million = luxury tax $52 million
Bucks are the smallest market
Hollywood Lakers are huge market
Why should Bucks pay more luxury tax than Lakers?
Maybe because their roster is significantly better than the Lakers’
PC is a role player who knows and plays his role well. Overpay, maybe, but certainly a known reliable, quantity who had his best shooting year in 21-22.
A little overpaid, but a good move. Counaghton has been good for them. He is tough and can play multiple positions
Bucks like their white guys.
They also employ one of the least gifted ball players in the league, who happens to be black, only to appease his brother, who coincidentally is also black.
Yeah, No kidding. I am making fun of stonk. All the dude does on the board is talk about how Brad Stevens is a Klan wizard.
My bad. Wasn’t aware of the history.
You’re lucky.
Um, if MJ had a brother named Timmy Jordan who was 4’10” and couldnt dribble, he would be well worth a roster spot to make MJ happy. If he makes Giannis happier, he is most certainly worth his roster spot.
Um, that wasn’t the point. The point is Pat has more talent and is worth his roster spot despite his skin color, ethnicity, musical preference or anything else, whereas Thanasis is most likely only on the roster to make big/little bro happy.
To summarize: Pat earned his spot, Thannie got his so Giannis would sign a max deal.
By the time the extension kicks in, this will be a bargain. Salaries will go nuts over the next two years as the luxury tax limit grows. There are a lot of contracts out there with far less value. As a rotation player. He’s pretty effective.
Who do you think is more likely to be in Milwaukee longer, Pat or Bobby?
Why?
They’re retiring together, as Bucks, in 2029. Mark it down.
I’m kidding, I would say Bobby just because PatC will probably take an elbow that blinds him in 1 eye before his new deal is done. Nothing dirty, his face just seems to be a magnet for elbows, fists/slaps, and even a knee now and then.
