After reporting last week that the Cavaliers have made a three-year offer worth approximately $40MM to restricted free agent guard Collin Sexton, Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com said this week during an appearance on Zach Lowe’s Lowe Post podcast that he doesn’t get the sense Sexton is learning toward accepting that offer.
“The offer I reported, the three-year (deal) around $40 million, I don’t get the sense that Collin and his camp would take that,” Fedor said (hat tip to RealGM). “I don’t think they would take a multiyear deal at that number.
“In fact, I think it would be more likely that they would take the qualifying offer (and) go into unrestricted free agency next offseason. Try and rebuild the value before that, show that you can be healthy, show that the meniscus tear is behind you, show you can adapt to a lesser sixth man role, all those different things. I think that is more likely than them taking the multiyear offer that the Cavs have made at this point in time.”
A sign-and-trade deal remains a possibility for Sexton as he seeks a more significant contract than the one the Cavaliers have offered, but it’s hard to find a logical trade partner for Cleveland, Fedor tweets.
The NBA’s base year compensation rules and the Cavs’ current and future cap situation would be complicating factors, according to Fedor, who notes that the team wants to stay out of the tax this season while maintaining cap room in 2023.
Here’s more on the Cavs:
- Extension discussions between the Cavaliers and Caris LeVert remain on hold while the club determines whether or not Sexton will return on a multiyear contract, Fedor said on Lowe’s podcast. If Sexton is locked up for multiple years, there would be less urgency to complete an extension with LeVert.
- Fedor also offered the following interesting tidbit on LeVert and Sexton, while speaking to Lowe: “There are multiple people inside the organization that, if they had their choice between Caris and Collin, they would take Caris over Collin. Because of the size, because of the length, because of the versatility that he can bring on the defensive end of the floor. And they liked what they saw with Caris and Darius (Garland) together.”
- In part one of her two-part mailbag for The Athletic, Kelsey Russo examines the Cavaliers’ expectations for the 2022/23 season and the Ochai Agbaji draft pick, among other topics. Russo predicts the team will exceed its over/under projection of 42.5 wins.
- Part two of Russo’s mailbag focuses on Cleveland’s potential roster crunch, Kevin Love‘s future, Ricky Rubio‘s ACL recovery, and the possibility of an eventual reunion with LeBron James.
At a certain point I don’t see why another team doesn’t offer him 45-50. Plenty of teams lack a pure scorer.. seems odd to me. If I’m the suns I’d call and sign and trade crowder, shamet and a couple seconds and bring in a 3rd guard who can score 20 a night. Seems like the lakers should be offering tucker/ nunn and picks. His injury is not carrier threatening, they say he works hard, and he shoots well from the floor
Cavs going to be good if LeVert stays healthy
Spurs should offer Sexton slightly more and see if he’ll take it.
If he won’t consider 40, 45 or 50 won’t move the needle either. That’s why they have made no traction and why no other team has made an offer. My guess he is looking for something like $75 for three years and will just bet on himself with the QO if that isn’t going to happen.
Cavs being Cavs 5.0
a) Garland had a breakout season. Stupid conclusion: It must be because Sexton wasn’t on the floor. REALITY: +3 in FGA, +4 in POINTS SCORED +2 in ASSISTS. Great season but it’s not like he was a nobody that went from a couple of points and assists. He had a small bump in performance that was more likely spurred by 1) Mobley and his 15 ppg and assists on easy lobs. 2) Markkanen joining and averaging 15ppg on a lot of catch and shoots 3) A reinvigorated Kevin Love that increased his minutes played by 1,000 over last year’s total and increased his shooting percentage across the board. 4) And having to bear the responsibilities of being the ONLY consistent guard to score on the team. Garland had to play 39 min per game in the 2nd half of the season, which was more then any other player in thug
b) Team wins doubled from 21 to 42. Stupid conclusion: Oh the team is better with Sexton not on the floor, that’s why they win 41 games. Reality: The team defense ranked 25th out of 30 in DefRtg and improved to 7th out of 30 this year. MUCH MORE LIKLEY the team defense improved because of the Twin Towers of Mobley and Allen plus a slightly improving Markkanen that managed to hold his own not having to bang in the paint. But Allen and Mobley were among the top in a few defensive categories.
FACT: Last year’s team ranked 20th in OffRtg and 25th out of 30th in points scored. We are set at PG, SF (Markkanen, Agbali, Okorro), PF (Mobley) and C (Allen). The most obvious position to add offense is at the SG position. But instead they rather pay Levert $1/$18 mil after shooting 44%/32%. Or are we holding out hope that the 33 yo Rubio coming off a major surgery is going to be savior after shooting 36 FG% and 33 3pt% last ?
This team had a great year with their wins doubling to 42. But we didn’t even make the playoffs. He have very little quality depth behind Garland. Neto, Levert and Rubio sometime in December is all we have. We were already a bad offensive team coming into last year. What did they do to improve the offense this year besides running it back and perhaps alienating Sexton??? Is there another player out there we can get to replace his 20++ points efficiently. Agbali might blossom. Maybe Okorro? Big question marks. If they fail to retain Sexton then I give the Cavs a D for this offseason. We can not afford to subtract talent from this roster nor do we have the time to waste. And if lowballing Sexton means they are worried about 2023 lux tax and ability to have cap space in case LBJ wants to return then shame on the organization for wishing for a rescue instead of standing tall on their own. If LBJ becomes a reality then there’s other ways to get him #bringsexlandback and see what that combo of Garland/Sexton/Markkanen/Mobley/Allen with Agbaji, Okorro, Love, Rubio, Lopez, Osmsn off the bench.
You need to look at future tax situation
Sign and trade
Suns would be a good fit but
Both team have tax issues in the future
The idea is 3 team deal so the third team takes the overpaid contract
@Sill
I could careless about the tax situation. Gilbert didn’t care about that either when the team was being competitive. And we have nearly 47 mil coming off the books next year so they can afford to go over for 1 year. The Cavs struggle to lure FA star talent. They’ve only drafted 2 players that averaged over 20 ppg. LBAJ and Kyrie. They have good talent. I want to see what they can do together.
You got no clue who Garland is lol.
I’ve been telling you for yrs Sexton is gone. Now all you do is cry about it. Cavs are better with the value they will get for him. If you were a Real Cavs fan you would know and accept that. You don’t even know who Agbaji is. I’m sure you didn’t know who Mobley was either. Or Allen. Teams are what is valuable not individuals. Team Sport
@Knickerbocker
You really should mind your business as far knowing what others do and don’t know. I was rooting for the Cavs 2 years before LBJ even came into the league. No, I’m not an expert on NCAA ball but weeks ahead of the final four I read up on mock drafts and start to watch conference games, the tournament and videos on the top 60. And although I’m not flexing the business that I’m in puts me in position to know quite a few behind the scenes guys in the NBA and NFL and will occasionally ask questions about players they know. Seriously bro. You’re a Richard. A small one too. Grow up.
DinWiddie’s 3/54 is a great comp. And if the sense is that the Cavs won’t even do that… Ship McBuckets to the Cavs and do a S&T with SAS. That would be a nice get as I’ve mentioned before. Or a slight overpay of 21/yr a la Buddy Hield and Gallo. 3/64M is still reasonably if you anticipate pre injury results.
My suspicion is that the Cavs want him playing for the QO. That will give them some flexibility this year. And with expirings it’s assured that next year’s roster will be substantially different anyway, They’ll take the risk of losing him a year from now.By then the team will be deep into re-constructing around Garland and Mobley, and where anyone else will fit is still being worked out.
@Cleveland
I don’t expect a lot of changes. Allen was the first player they committed to giving him a 5 year deal. The Twin Towers concept seems to work. I think Garland, Mobley and Allen are fixtures. I even think Markkanen and Agbaji are going to be mainstays at SF if LBJ doesn’t return. SG is really the position that needs attention.
5 years/$68-72 million, or take the qualifying offer
@formerly
You honestly believe he’s worth less than $15 per?
That’s only $6-10 million less than I thought Poole and Herro were worth before the Simons deal, so ya, in comparison to a lot of others, as of now, I think that’s a fair deal. If he doesnt, he should take the qualifying offer, have a big year, and try to improve on that, and maybe go year to year for a year or 2 afterwards
By the way that’s clearly more than what he was offered, so what even is the argument?
One must feel sorry for Sexton, after all he has done for CLE… just hope he can get out of there as soon as possible & go somewhere else, to be more appreciated!
Serious question have you watched a lotmor Cavs games when they were brutal before last year? Sexton for have good counting stats…. And did have his games where he took over, but the ball sticks to.him, numerous time she dribbled the air out of the ball, ignores wide open shooters and gets blocked more than anyone in the league …. Very frustrating player to watch .. he’s is 4th or 5th in terms of importance to the Cavs now … So it’s understandable
@jaash5
Feel free to present your evidence but what I found for 20-21 was this:
1. Zion Williamson – 131 times 2. Collin Sexton – 97 3. RJ Barrett – 86 4. Elfrid Payton – 78 5. Dennis Schroder – 74
Zion had his shot blocked the most in 20-21 but it makes sense. He lives in the post area and attacks the rim almost exclusively within 3 ft of the basket (70% of the time). But he’s also dominant in the post with a 61 FG%.
Sexton, though much shorter than Zion also is the epitome of a 3 tier scorer. Shots by distance 27% from 0-3 ft. 25% from 3-10 ft. 16% from 10-16 ft. 7% from 16 to 3pt line. 23% from 3pt+.
But what’s really important? He shoots 47% FG%. When your making near 50% of your shots does it matter if thr other misses are blocked vs an off jumper? He’s attacking the basket and likely to draw some fouls because not all challenged shots are going to be clean, especially when he’s shooting 62% from 0-3 ft.
As for him being a “ball hog” his usage rate in 20-21 was right in line with other cats whose job it is to score.
Doncic @ 36
Beal @ 34.8
Trae Young @ 33
D. Booker @ 32
Steph Curry @ 34.8
Lillard @ 31.4
Lavine @ 31
P. George @ 30
J. Brown @ 29.7
Sexton @ 29.7 Usage %
Jokic @ 29.6
Levert @ 28.7
Garland @ 25
It’s his job to score the same way it’s Curry’s, Kyries, Beal or Lillard. Sexton took 3.5 more FGA than Garland but he also shot the ball well @ 48/37/82%. His 4.4 assists per game indicate that he was a winning passer as his assists ranked 2nd on the squad , 1.5 less than Garland. And Sexton’s TOV% was lower than most others on that list (11) which was less than Garland’s (16). So it’s one thing to regurgitate a stat but you also need to put it in context and understand what it does and doesn’t say about the player looking at his role, the team and in comparison to the league.
And with all of that he has never been a net positive on the court… RFA or not if the league saw what you just said there is no way he’d be sitting with no one attempting sign and trades or anything else… And sorry he blocked second most in the league …. And so many of these are possession killing drives where they should not even be attempted, ingnoring wide open shooters and taking in 2 and 3 on 1 drives where they are even close
@Jaash5
Nice…… ignore the facts that it didn’t really matter how you missed when your making 47% of your shots. That’s like someone making a big deal that Curry gets his shot blocked the most when shooting 3s but ignoring that he’s making over 40% of them and getting fouled too.
I also think you’re only taking his best year into consideration. If he had done what he did that year multiple times, he would have possibly got paid closer to the line of Poole/Herro, but that was by far his best year. I also think about how you can look at certain guards like Kendrick Nunn, and wonder who you would rather have had, and he got $5 million last year…
