JULY 8: The Cavaliers have officially completed the signing of Reto, per a team press release.
JULY 1: Free agent point guard Raul Neto is signing with the Cavaliers, reports Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link). Neto will receive a one-year, minimum-salary contract, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com (Twitter link).
Neto, 30, spent the last seasons in D.C. as a backup point guard for the Wizards and acquitted himself well, averaging 8.1 PPG, 2.7 APG, and 2.2 RPG on .465/.349/.819 shooting in 134 total games (20.7 MPG). The seven-year veteran previously spent time with the Jazz and Sixers.
The Cavaliers reached an agreement on Friday to bring back veteran point guard Ricky Rubio to back up All-Star Darius Garland, but Rubio is recovering from a torn ACL and is unlikely to be ready to play this fall.
While Rubio works his way back, Neto should get a chance to be Garland’s primary backup. He’ll presumably shift a spot down the depth chart when Rubio returns.
In addition to agreeing to terms with Rubio and Neto today, the Cavaliers struck a minimum-salary deal with center Robin Lopez, as they continue to add veteran depth to complement their core.
So now Cavs 15 players under contract, not including Collin Sexton…so what is next? Trade Windler? Wade? Osman? Or just let Collin walk?
Release Windler
Probably the most likely scenario at this point.
I’d imagine Windler is gone, whether they just cut him or whether they attach a future second or some cash for a team to take his cap hit. Cedi or Wade could probably be traded, but I imagine Cedi would be more likely. I’m sure they want to bring Sexton back.
@Michael
I truly hope they intend on bringing Sexton back but getting nervous. I hope Rich Paul doesn’t draw this out like he did for Tristan and JR back when LBJ was here.
There isn’t a market for Sexton right now. Cavs are going to either get him for around 18 Mill a year OR what I dread is that he just signs his qualifying offer and becomes an unrestricted FA next year.
Either way I’m fully confident that Sexton will be a Cavaliers next season.
@OhThat’s
Naaah. Coming off his leh injury and losing whatever momentum he had going into the year makes me think he’s going to want to secure the biggest bag possible with the likelihood it’s not going to be 5/$100 mil. Besides he just saw another Klutch client in Miles Bridges bet on himself last year and just fumbled the bag inches away from touchdown.
S**t, now that Garland just got the biggest bag in team history, I find it hard for him to accept half of what Garland is making. If I were Sexton, I’d take the qualifying offer and ball out. Sexton has a different mentality than Bridges. Dude is all about basketball and putting in that work.
Yeah that’s exactly what I’m thinking too.
@Sexland
I heard (from less credible site) they were trying to trade Osman ($8 mil).I love the kid but it makes sense. They like what Lamar Stevens ($1.8 mil) brings to the table and he’s cheaper. Wyndler release could work too.
Certainly move Windler before Wade. Cavs scouting did not make a huge mistake, as Windler plays good defense. But 30%on3s, ouch.
If Osman is just a dump, keep him, they are thin at 3. I do like Stevens too, in the eye test.
Yeah I think Osman leaving makes sense. Agbaji would easily make up for his shooting and is even a better defender. Lamar is great, I still think Windler has potential, and Collin’s scoring ability is one of the NBA’s best. I think I’d be okay with Wade’s departure, but I don’t think Cavs will let him walk after guaranteeing his contract a week ago. But who knows
Yea, of Winder and Cedi I’d rather keep Windler. Cedi is a known product and not a very good one at that. Windler still has some potential since he’s been hurt for most of his career. Would hate to give up on him and he turns into Joe Harris for someone else.
You can have 20 players until the season starts. Them you cut down to 15
Cavs are working on a S&T for Rubio. I’d imagine it includes Cedi. Hopefully their end game is to keep the full MLE available so they can replace him with TJ Warren.
They signed Rubio already, maybe 3/$20? Nothing left of the MLE now!
There were reports when that came out that they were looking for to make a S&T happen. It’s still a possibility.
Yes not official yet. And it’s 3/$18.4m reported.
HR is also now reporting draftee salaries. They have a lot of posting to do!
This is what I’m hoping for! T.J. Warren. Would be just what we need!
Cedi has to go. He’s had far too long and no real development. He’s not going to get more athletic either. Free his cash up because were overpaying Sexton.
My brazilian guy keeps getting jobs! LFG RAUL!
Approve of both Neto and Robin Lopez. Lopez the new Wild Thing! Hair like Varejao, if he keeps it long, and is hard-working. But Lopez is physical, tough.
Brazilian Neto is mobile & confident & can shoot 3s better than 36%. He comes in like he thinks he’s the starter. Should be a good precursor to Rubio.
I do not see any FO mistakes this offseason— so far. Ogbaji is narrowly talented, but straight on the shooting need. If not accurate, he’s like the guard version of Tristan. I would have preferred the Ohio St duo, but not bad.
Sexton is left.
I heard Dallas is in on Sexton and offering $20-$22 mil per. Think the Cavs match? We were 25th in scoring last year and Darius had to play 38 minutes per game in the 2nd half. He had a lot of pressure on him. I think it would be crazy to lose Sexton over money.
Secton would be more dangerous in a 5-out like Kidd likes. Well, Gilbert’s call. He was probably the one that wanted Sexton most in the draft that year.
Does Dallas have the room to offer that or could we get something back in a sign trade, like Josh Green?
They should’ve just paid Brunson who’s the better basketball player at the moment. I also don’t think the Mavs have the cap space, I could be wrong though.
